I just saw it is 6.1 not 5.4.(0-60) Well .5 seconds is not too bad. I guess I will have to get that Exhaust when I get the car.

an exhaust isn't going to make you get to 5.4 from 6.1, chuck. i think you'll need to go visit the pet store with KC. (KC should post to clarify our little joke) http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smile.gif http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smile.gif

Pet store? A trunk-monkey to help push?

How fast does a trunk monkey go?

Awww... wook at dat cute little fishy wishy.

Actually, it's going to be Home Depot. http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smile.gif

Kris, I'm thinking when we go pick up the cars we head right over.... http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/wink.gif

Chuck, what efoo here is referring to is a simple little fish valve will help release the boost before it hits the wastegate, thefore the boost will build better cause the wastegate's not seeing 14.2 lbs. It's generally called a 'manual boost controller' or MBC.

It's got 14.2 psi right now. With the "manual boost controller", you can set it anywhere between "a little more boost" to "till your engine blows up." http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/wink.gif

The 1st mod you want is a true boost gauge when you're doing this to keep an eye on the boost levels you're getting.

You'll be lucky if it will always be capable of doing 6.1 secs. Remember the terms: Knock sensor, learning ECU, and more. I think some of the early reviwers of the WRX, who have bothered to hook up a scan tool, have already seen evidence of the boost and timing being dialed back. Another thing to remember is that the WRX has a higher minimum octane requirement. And I wouldn't doubt that the HP and torque ratings will have a note saying achieved with XX octane gas (this is a pretty much standard note with other manufacturers performance cars).

I thought the new car was 13.5 psi??
Need to vent the blow-off to atmosphere too. http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smile.gif

I like the factory boost gauge mounted on the dash, but we'll see.
KC - Manual Boost Controller... That's not going to be SCCA legal is it?! Hahahahaha!

I wouldn't be quite so negative, Scott. If the ECU can learn to dial back timing and boost, it can just as easily dial it forward too. It has to, otherwise it's an open loop system and will eventually peg at 0 timing and 0 boost, heh. http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smile.gif now, it may take its timing increasing boost compared to reducing it, true. But an ECU reset tool or procedure will easily fix all that. I don't know if Subaru plans to make that difficult for people or not though.

Just find a reputable gas station and stick with it that's all. And drive it like you stole it so it doesn't think you're a grandma and tunes the car accordingly. http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smile.gif

ps: kris, i doubt you'll be able to vent the BOV to atmosphere. you'll be confusing the MAF sensor big time. If the turbo engine uses a MAP, fine, but the old 2.0L turbos used MAFs.

I guess that means I'll be one of the few owners of a Subaru that makes vrooom-vroom-PHSSHhhh noises. ha! http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smile.gif

Chuck (and others) - if you edit your message again there is a delete check box. If you check this - it deletes the whole thing.

Just in-case you double post.
Thanks,

Man, throw Edwin a TEC-II and Boost and he becomes and expert in a few months. http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smile.gif I am impessed to say the least (and I know you will post saying your not an expert, no one is, but you have learned a ton over the past few months.
I dont understand why so many people are negative towards the ECU/etc. These are the things that make having a newer car so great! When was the last time you had a fuel injected car stall from being cold in the winter. Me, never!!
I agree with Edwin, it can and will work better. I do not see Subaru making the tuning/aftermarket difficult. It is not there thing. Almost everything on a Subaru is easy (except on Edwin's car, which is the complete oppisite http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smile.gif ).

I am liking the WRX more and more, but I can't justify trading my car for more payments and higher insurance at this point in my life.

dirk,

no, KC is talking about splicing into the line where the wastegate gets its boost signal from. the wastegate has an input that measures boost, and opens when the boost goes past a certain value. but if you fool with the input so the wastegate doesn't see that value until later, it won't open so early. that's essentially how a manual boost controller works.

note that you can only *increase* boost this way though, not decrease it.

as far as the times go... there is an article on www.grassrootsmotorsports.com (http://www.grassrootsmotorsports.com) in the new car review section that says 5.7's and 5.5 w/ a 'prosolo' launch @ sea level of course. So you might be closer than you think.

really? that's cool. I wouldn't be surprised if the manufacturers underrate their cars actually.

in that case, an exhaust may well do it then. you'll have to really whale on your car to get it to do that though - ProSolo-type launches leave your car smelling like burnt clutch for quite a few minutes afterwards. http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smile.gif I bet Subaru is going to be pretty strict about warrantying these cars too, given how they are about them overseas - I hear they even send representatives to owners meets and take down VIN numbers to deny warranty coverage if the cars are modified.

I really don't see the point of purchasing this car unless you want 227HP with a factory warranty. I do not see Subaru letting people by when they come in with damaged engine internals. This is there 2.0L, not a new american only 2.5L engine. They know what it can take. If your going to void the warranty the first day, pick up a cheaper older style RS (like KC's) and turbo it. Save yourself the money on insurance and put it towards mods. The car had the potential to be faster too. Now if you just want to take it to the autocross stock and kick butt (maybe a swaybar, some suspension stuff) go ahead. But if your going to start playing with boost, what is the point?

Some of these learning ECU's have memory (the new Covettes even have a real black box like the planes do). The dealer might be able to tell what you have done very easily.

Edit: I meant to post this in the other topic about the car. Sorry..

The idea that SOA is going to void warranties is a bit paranoid. Most likely the dealerships will be little bitches about it, and we'll have to go to other dealerships and give them our business. I heard the story of them taking down VIN numbers too. I also heard this guy woke up in a bathtub of ice with his kidney missing.

I'm sure I'll have the itch to "really" turn up the boost, but I'll be well past the break-in period, and chugging towards 60K by then. If you turn up the boost to 18psi, change the turbo, change the intake & exhaust and expect engine warranty - you are a fool. If you turn up the boost +2 psi, add an exhaust, and a rod drops out of your car - then there porbably was something MAJOR wrong with your engine from Japan.

You can also remove fishy piping http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/biggrin.gif
KC - Lets just hope they bring over the PPP!
PPP = Prodrive Proformance Pack; 280 with Warranty! Muhahaha.
