View Full Version : Porsche sound? Billy 02-03-2001, 11:50 PM Porsche boxer engines have a distinctive engine sound that is music to my ears. My question is can I make my 2000RS sound similar to that? What mods might be necessary? Eric SS 02-04-2001, 12:22 AM Easy, just add a couple cylinders to our car http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/biggrin.gif Eric 2yLiTe 02-04-2001, 01:15 AM I'm not sure how much truth there is to this but.. I heard that when developing the new generation Porsches, the sound wasn't quite right...to solve this issue, several ports, baffles, and resonators were added to achieve the "classic" Porsche sound. Just something I heard... XT6Wagon 02-04-2001, 01:44 AM Sorry but its damn hard to get a aircooled flat 6 sound out of a watercooled flat 4. Infact the easy way out would be to put a aircooled flat 6 under the hood. Eric SS 02-04-2001, 01:45 AM Exactly what I was implying http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif Eric Eric SS 02-04-2001, 01:46 AM And actually, the new Porsches are watercooled http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif Just a bit of trivial info... http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif Eric FLUBYUx2 02-04-2001, 01:52 AM you talkin about the watercooled flat 6s that have the 'whale tale' radiator that comes up at 35mph, or what have you? chris Eric SS 02-04-2001, 01:53 AM All the New Porsches are watercooled. I think from 1999-present. The 1998 Twin Turbo was the last air cooled engine I think... Eric Billy 02-04-2001, 10:04 AM Ah thanks for the info guys! Maybe I'll just play that engine note through my sound system. LOL Habu 02-04-2001, 05:47 PM I love that Porsche engine sound just as much, man, in fact my RS does have some sound cues from that classic boxer 6. However, the Porsche was unique in that being air-cooled it had that big fan prodicing a "whooosh" type sound found only in Porsche engines. I think it is that sound that would make an RS sound closer to the Porsche. Starting with the Boxster, all Porsche engines are now water-cooled. The new 996 is that way, but form the 993 down all were air cooled. Gotta Fly! ChaosThom 02-05-2001, 10:54 AM I have a Porsche 928. It's got a monster road devouring V8. There is nothing like the roar of that beast at full throttle. You just can't fake it. I like to cruise through parking lots in 2nd gear at idle. The vibrations from the engine and exhaust set off car alarms! Waltsacura 02-05-2001, 11:27 AM One of my favorite sounds is a Porsche Boxster at WOT, what an amazing car. Our cars can sound similar to Porsche cars, but never the same. Personally I love the high preformance tractor sound of my RS, it's definately no Boxster, but it's much more fun (especially in the snow). Subaman 02-05-2001, 11:41 AM All porsches have whiny, mechanical sound. This sound MUST BE engineered because it seems like all Porsches are like this, the inline 4 from a 944, the H4 from a 914, the air 911, the water996, boxster. They all got this whiny sound. Most people love it, some people hate it, but it is definitely the sound of a Porsche. I don't think this is a characteristic of a horizontal design. Waltsacura 02-05-2001, 03:48 PM Our cars sound nothing like a turbo. A stock RS seems to be all show and no go. Awesome looking car, but I'm really disappointed that I live in a country that not only can;t make cars worth a damn... but we can;t even get the awesome cars from countries that know how to make cars... we always get some watered down version. (Disclaimer to being an ass: I'm stuck at work cause it snowed 8-10" today and the stupid freakin people on the road suck and can't drive worth a damn, so the road is essentially a parking lot...) There aren't even any fields that I can cut across! Anyways, back to the topic from which I have strayed so far from. My car has a unique sound and I like it a lot, but a Porsche it is not. (I feel like Dr. Seuss:-) Even at WOT it sounds nothing like it should... like it was designed to sound in the rest of the world... like an Sti... MarbleTurtle 02-05-2001, 04:19 PM "I like it alot, but a Porsche it is not." Thank goodness! I had a C2 and the expense to keep it running was outrageous! I'm glad Subie makes a car with great road feel (its not about numbers) that is inexpensive and reliable. One day I might own another one, but you can bet my home, student loans, credit cards, and kid's education will be paid off first. A winning powerball ticket wouldn't hurt either. http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/tongue.gif http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/tongue.gif http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/tongue.gif Kevin Thomas 02-05-2001, 04:57 PM Have we forgotten the big V8 rumble/burble the 2.5RS makes with a Borla header? I remember people saying this in a past post. mhj 02-06-2001, 01:11 AM Sure the subaru sounds like a small truck at idle, but at WOT, doesn't it have that nice turbo whine (even without a turbo). I know my '99 impreza L does and so did my 2 GL's. |
