View Full Version : Whooot!: Laguna Seca Track Day Scooby Fest
SFsube 06-29-2001, 04:08 PM I reserved Laguna Seca Raceway December 14th 2001 with my pals at Donutzracing.
I'm going to reserve half of the spots for Subarus. The emphasis will be on smaller groups (no NASA style fleets) and instruction.
Subaru of America and Santa Cruz Subaru are going to help out...plans are still evolving there...but I'd like to thank Larry Kelso At SOA and Bruce for their continued support!!
Since LSIR is so popular I'm trying to get the registration open early so we can get as many Scoobies in as possible.
The event will definitely sell out.
More soon....pricing etc.
Post suggestions and questions here...thanks!
angus
Andrew 06-29-2001, 04:41 PM sounds like fun, hopefully ill be able to make it.
lndbrusr 06-29-2001, 05:14 PM definately interested... even be cool if it rained!!!! Please keep us informed.

bgsntth 06-29-2001, 05:30 PM I'm a definite participant. How much and where do I send my check?
Count me in also. Just update with info when avail!!
Reza:D
skywalker 06-29-2001, 06:39 PM I am so there!!!
The last time I was there it was a BLAST!!!
Suggestions:
1.) Tent Area's, wether it is raining or sunny I think it would ideal
2.) Three slow laps or for Subaru's only. Get some shots on the track like at Thunderhill Track Day, after the day is done.
3.) Will this be the 2nd annual Subaru of Santa Cruz Track Day? That would be sweet if we could have one yearly going from track to track around Cali?
4.) Universal Hotel for everyone to stay at.
Oh, word of warning, I believe there is a DB limit of 90 for all cars on the track and they have a guy meassuring the sound at corner 5 I think, on the way up the hill.
ndmorespd 06-29-2001, 06:48 PM skywalker speaks!

Is this the Official yearly SC Meet??? If so I'll have to sell my first born to go! (as I did the first, (and the half) I'll have to do the second!!!)

SFsube 06-30-2001, 03:33 AM After we get the insurance figured out I should be able to post the cost.

thanks for all the suggestions and emails so far.

whomR 06-30-2001, 03:20 PM I am interested. Let me know when you have more information. December 14th is a Friday? Curious why you did not choose a weekend?
titsataki 06-30-2001, 07:52 PM I am interested as well...
Friday is that right?
Let us know cost etc etc....
T.
PS: I hope to take a ride there earier and I will post pics...
SFsube 07-02-2001, 02:48 PM It is a Friday for a couple of reasons, the biggest being:
Getting a date at LSIR is nearly impossible, at least on the notice we gave them. Skip Barber takes like half the days off the year right off. Plus big races, which close the track for prep and after event clean up and county events and blah blah :)
Weekend dates are brutally expensive.
I know Friday isn;t perfect, but the reason I'm giving this much notice is so that everyone has plenty of time to plan.
cheers,
Angus
russellh68 07-02-2001, 04:26 PM Count me in! I have been itching to get back on the track there since the Skip Barber company event that I took part in a year or so ago. :D :D :D
bobski 07-02-2001, 05:33 PM Angus, If SOA and SC Subaru are on board, does that mean there will be loot to go around?:D
SFsube 07-02-2001, 06:08 PM I'm going to try and get maximum lootage. :)
angus
bemani 07-02-2001, 08:17 PM I want in, bad ...
Rallytime 07-03-2001, 02:02 PM I am in as well. I'll be down there in late November for the Superbike school.
What exactly does it mean when you say SOA and Subaru of Santa Cruz are official? Sponsorship of some sort? What does it entail?
christoph1371 07-03-2001, 03:02 PM I am SOOOoooo there angus. Count me in.
Best tip i can give...save up money and buy cheap steel rims and throw some stickies on em...like hoosiers or sumthin. This will get you alot more fun than dumping lots o money in our engines.
SFsube 07-03-2001, 04:01 PM By official I mean that SOA and Subaru of Santa Cruz will be there and supporting us in some capacity.
This will be the second time.
Angus
franzilla 07-03-2001, 05:35 PM count me in! :D
Ken Levin 07-03-2001, 09:43 PM Great Angus! Second annual SOA/Santa Cruz Subaru/Bay Area Subaru Track Day sounds right to this "traditionalist". I'll be there with my support crew once again.
Too bad I dont have my (sweet) green Impreza Outback any longer ;)
SuicidalLabRat 07-04-2001, 03:53 AM I'm so there! All I care about is, as skywalker stated/requested, some test lap time, I have a real hard time at high speed line discovery when I'm concerned with lap-time and how much track time I have. Make this happen!!!
SLR-
SFsube 07-05-2001, 05:38 PM Thanks for making the topic sticky!!
Imprezer 07-05-2001, 05:58 PM NP, I finally figured out how to do it, hehe.
SFsube 07-05-2001, 09:27 PM Yeee haw!
I just got a note from Gary Sheehan and I'm very excited to share some news.
It looks like Gary will be at the track day with his USTCC WRX race car! In addition to being an amazing addition as an instructor (what better than his Scooby line for us Scoobies ?:) ) Gary has VERY kindly offered to give rides in his WRX. WHooot!!
I think the best part is that Gary is actually racing the very next day and throughout that weekend. This is an awesome opportunity to check out the race car, maybe grab some passenger time on a world class racetrack and then stick around to see the WRX fight the good fight Saturday and Sunday.
Additionally, Gary passed on an invite to visit the paddock on Saturday and Sunday, " We love having visitors at
our trailer and will hang out with them whenever we
get a breather." This is a prime opportunity to support Gary's team!!
Big props to Gary. He made it to the first track day after working all night long to get the car to the track so we could check it out. We are very psyched to have him and his team participate.
more soon,
angus
up4air 07-06-2001, 01:20 AM This will be great fun.:D :D
U4 it!
skywalker 07-06-2001, 12:52 PM Sweet!!! :D
The Yellow S2k 07-07-2001, 08:23 PM If I put a Subaru badge on my S2000, can I come too? I promise not to kick your butts too bad....:p
Chris
MontereyDoc 07-08-2001, 03:25 AM Well since I live in Monterey, Already you know I will be there... That will give me time to do a few mods to my car..... Can't wait for all the details....
skywalker 07-08-2001, 10:32 PM I would like to see that S2000 kick my butt. :D On Lagauna Seca that is going to be pretty hard to see.
At Thunderhill probably, unless my "mods" are in by then... :D
mcgyver 07-09-2001, 05:00 AM I'm with you Bill ;)
And my Mods are in, so that would definately be interesting.
I'm pleased to announce that I now join those of you in the Turbo ranks :D
So, LSIR will be much more enjoyable !!!
Count me in Angus, pretty please ;)
Later,
Adam
kaminari 07-09-2001, 01:18 PM This track rules!
What're the rules for non-scooby drivers?
I've got one, but some friends (who might be interested) could possibly want to go.
Any cost figures yet?
thanks!!!
-jasojn
skywalker 07-09-2001, 02:51 PM From the sounds of things, a lot of people want to go. Of course there is only so much room. I am not sure what Angus had in mind, but maybe we should do all Scoobies first and then if there is room whoever else wants to come can join in.
Again, I am not sure how Angus is going to set this up but if there 100 poeple that want to go and only 45 spots then something has to be figured out.
Don't want to make anyone mad but since it "sounds like" a Subaru thing, I figured Subaru's would get first dibs. I could be wrong though...
Of course I would love to see all other kinds of sports cars... :D
pbnj9786 07-09-2001, 02:56 PM i want to go, put me on the list please. so, how much will the day cost?
pj
kaminari 07-09-2001, 03:42 PM I totally understand about the scoobies first thing...
It's not that big a thing.
But I would like to see other sports cars, especially ones we could flog :D
The Yellow S2k 07-09-2001, 04:29 PM my first ever track event was at laguna a month ago and I had no problems passing a couple vipers and passing instructors in lesser cars. I had no instruction at the time. I even was able to keep even with a modded C5 on victoracers. I'm not saying I'm a great driver having only 2 track events so far...but I'd love a challenge from you scoobies. I should have my R compounds by December also. :)
btw, I've noticed turbos are useless if you are too scared to brake late...luckily my car has great stock brakes.
I guess if there is no room, I'll have to settle for the NASA event that is happening at Laguna around the same time...but that probably won't be as fun...
Chris
Boingo 07-09-2001, 04:43 PM Oh man, I am dying to drive Laguna Seca. Count me in, any day and any time.
skywalker 07-09-2001, 05:55 PM Personally I would love to see the S2000 and see what is has. I was looking at that car for a short time, but stuck with my Scoobie.
Well lets see what Angus has to offer on info.
SFsube 07-09-2001, 07:04 PM I'm wroking on it....now that I see how fired up everyone is, I'm trying to geta ll my ducks in a row before I spam the board :)
angus
kaminari 07-10-2001, 12:11 AM Chris, I was the one that came up to you at Thunderhill... (THSS)
I wanted to talk to you again, but you left before I had the chance to.
How did you like that school?
I had a great time! :D
catch ya later

whtstr 07-10-2001, 01:15 AM Count me in for this!
Have been waiting for an event like this since the first day i got my WRX!
will go, no matter what!
joltdudeuc 07-10-2001, 02:47 AM Well, it's on a friday, so i'm not sure if i'm gonna be outta school or not, but put me on the list!
I'll even skip class as long as it's not a final...
finally, proper testing for my 2.5 RS!
-Gagan:D
up4air 07-12-2001, 01:02 AM U4:D :D :D
SFsube 07-12-2001, 04:23 PM Early indications are it will be approx $250 per person for LSIR. Since LSIR only allows 25 cars per run group, we are trying to figure out how many spots/run groups we offer. Given that over 12k is required to rent the track for the day, please hang tight with me as we calculate the best route.
We get:
Track and Paddock Rental
Track Supervisor
Soundtester (2)
Turn Workers (12)
Standby Ambulance
Insurance
Standby Fire Crew
Standby Tow Truck
Food
Track time for any driver should equal 6x30minute sessions. Plenty of time.
Working on more details. VERY excited about this. I was just at LSIR watching the motorcycle races and it brought back great memories of track days at LSIR...so much fun.

SFsube 07-13-2001, 05:23 PM To everyone emailing me...watch here for updates...I have all your names and email addresses for those dying to drive LSIR, but I don't have time to answer everyone individually right now.
Thanks!!
angus
subywan-kenobi 07-16-2001, 12:53 PM Awesome, I will be moving back to Cali by then!! I can't wait to get to know all you Bay Area folk. We have a pretty tight group up here in MI, but I am looking forward to coming back home with the Wag.
Mike S.
Andrew 07-16-2001, 05:30 PM Is it ok to get others to come also, or are we making this a Subaru exclusive?
Looks like I'll be practicing GT3 on the Laguna Seca track with a somewhat more powerful version of my car :D
edit: can we have a passanger in the car? do they have to pay anything or do we have to pay anything extra? is it possible to have an instructor in the car as well?
SFsube 07-16-2001, 08:29 PM A single passenger is ok. They will probably have to pay some cash to be in the paddock and sign a Laguna Seca waiver.
Figuring out the dilly-o on instructors now...
angus
ndmorespd 07-16-2001, 09:24 PM Is there something special about LSIR or something? The previous events (yes I know @ T-Hill vice LSIR) there has been no need to pay for spectators?
Mike
#25
SFsube 07-17-2001, 02:19 AM As far as spectators and passengers go a waiver is required even to visit the paddock.
As far as the charges for spectators, I should have said if they want lunch etc there would be a charge. I think only NASA charges spectators at LSIR.
angus
ndmorespd 07-17-2001, 02:28 AM Good 2 Go... Just got a little confused... I had brought someone (two even once) to both of the previous events I went to and of course they bought a lunch ;)...
Anyway thanks for the clarification...
I will of course keep watching for more info...
I will not deny that I am a BIT afraid of the walls @ LSIR... It doesn't seem (at least on TV or GT2/3) to have a WHOLE lot of run-off room as does T-Hill...
Mike
#25
Andrew 07-17-2001, 03:19 AM hey angus, are we keeping this subaru exclusive? the reason i ask is my friend with an MR2 wants to join in and im sure my friedn with an eclipse wants in too.
N8S_WRX 07-17-2001, 12:44 PM I would like to attend as well. What is the cost & details? I'll have some interested people with other cars.

mike:
As far as walls go, LSIR demands respect. No doubt about it. I won't BS anyone interested in this event, people crash at racetracks (see ambulance, fire crew and towtruck). The difference at our event is that there is ZERO tolerance for red misted driving or even a lack of courtesy. With 12 flaggers watching your every move, you can be assured that anything dodgy will get you a black flag and end your day. Also, passing zones will be limited based on the group, "slow/new to LSIR" or "fast/Driven LSIR/SCCA race license/instructor/etc"(BTW: Mike I know you are a great driver, my safety tirade is for general consumption).
Even though Subaru of Santa Cruz is a sponsor, I know they don't want anyone to bring the car in because of violent contact with another car or a wall.
angus
ndmorespd 07-17-2001, 09:39 PM Thanks for the BTW ;)

Kostamojen 07-18-2001, 04:13 AM Damn, alot could happen for me between now and december... LOL!
I'd probably just go to watch and hang out :) (IF im not busy/gone)

SFsube 07-24-2001, 06:37 PM waiting on final insurance quote and then I am assured I can post a final price.
tks for patience everyone.
angus
The Yellow S2k 07-25-2001, 03:49 PM screw the price! I just wanna run! :p
What difference does a few measly $100 bills make when you're talking about ~~~LAGUNA SECA~~~ :D
kaminari 07-25-2001, 04:56 PM The NASA HPDE Track day at LSIR that I participated in was $250, whereas T-hill and Sears Point were $150 (NASA's raising their prices to $175 or $180 or something for those two tracks)... so LSIR does run more than most other "local" tracks.
I think they just want to know a ballpark price range.

SFsube 07-26-2001, 07:01 PM I tried to convince B of A, and then Wells Fargo, to accept small children, but it was a no-go....something to do with [Chris Farley voice on plus quote gestures] "international treaties" and "human rights" and "the fact that you can't put kids in the trunk"...I was like, Uh, this is a TRACKDAY at LAGUNA SECA!!!
then I got kicked out.

bemani 08-06-2001, 03:44 PM I'm afraid we'll have too many people.

Haven't run the track in 10yrs i need a refresher run!
scotto 08-15-2001, 10:19 PM Hey Angus,
Please count me in as well. BTW I have a good friend who races historics who might be a lead for an instructor. If you are looking for more instructors, let me know by e-mail.
I was just up there, LSIR, last weekend with the above friend for the Pre-Historics. Got to go for a lunch-time ride-a-long on Sunday. :D :D :D :D
I did quite a bit of videotaping last weekend which turned out reasonably well. I may be able to tape some sessions that I am not in for anyone who is interested - let me know in advance or at the track.
Would be great to stay and see Gary run as well!
There were two WRX's at the Pre - Historic event, and a silver sedan who got to try out the track during the Sunday Ride-a-long.

rex_ruthor 08-21-2001, 02:58 AM sounds like fun..even if i dont have any mods by then and wind up with the slowest times.

Andrew 09-01-2001, 11:02 PM if you had me on any form of a list, please take me off. im a beginner when it comes to racing, etc. and i think its better if i learn how to drive better before going to Leguna Seca. i might head out there though just to watch everyone run and maybe take some pics with the digital camera.
wrxken 09-02-2001, 03:03 AM please put me down on list to attend and thanks to Bruce @ santa cruz dealer forgiving me the url tothis site

I think you mean braking deeper into the braking area not late I would be real scared if I "braked" LATE that usually means off the track you go :_(

DUH.... guess that would have been dB not db. That's my racer mentality overshadowing my SQL mentality.
Anyways, people keep in mind that Laguna does have some anal sound restrictions. But don't worry, unless you're running a severly modified exhaust, you won't have any problems.

eastbaysubaru 09-08-2001, 04:39 AM I would also like to be included in this, but I will be driving my girlfriend's '00 RS. I hope it's not too late to get in on this. Thanks.

OnTheGas 09-12-2001, 12:56 AM I don't know if you currently have too many Subaru's, or not enough, but if you're looking to fill out the field, some SoCal folks would be thrilled to drive up and join ya... Everybody loves Laguna Seca.

SFsube 09-28-2001, 04:18 PM As far as the database goes...let me just say for now that a Young Jedi from the Bay Area is working in it and it will be ready to rock soon!
It is looking sweet.
More soon.
Angus
Saw Jai 09-28-2001, 08:20 PM wow...I didn't know the force could be used to make databases as well
time for me to go find this jedi and force my name onto the list! :p
Ken Levin 09-29-2001, 09:25 PM How many so far? Do we need to limit sign-ups or schedule an additional day so we can maintain reasonably small run groups and still get enough track time?
Thanks to you and Y.J. for working this up. :D
Happy Motoring!
youpers 09-30-2001, 04:43 AM Is this going to be open to any type of car? Not that is a problem but I was under the impression that this was a Subaru track day. It will be very interesting to see how all the "other guys" run with the Subarus.
bomberbboy 10-05-2001, 01:53 AM I'd like to come by and watch. Will they charge for spectating? Where exactly can you go to watch or take pictures? BTW I'd like a ride in someone's car if possible :D

bomberbboy 10-06-2001, 12:07 AM Poor high school students like me can't afford a helmet. :( Will this be an all-day event on December 14th? I think I still have school that Friday...
Speaking of helmets, are Snell M 95's okay for racing? I'm thinking about getting a Bell Star1 since it's relatively cheap for a full face helmet. I'll probably start out with drag racing and then track after that. If not I'll probably have to go with a more expensive Bell SR-Pro. Any thoughts on this?
yodakun 10-11-2001, 10:41 PM Snell M 95 helmets will only get you in for autocross, and that only for the next year or so (I think). In general, you'll need a SA95 at least, and for all real purposes, an SA2000 helmet.
Joe Longworth 10-12-2001, 02:23 PM Damnit.
I was just looking at my schedule only to find that this event is on the same weekend as the Ramada Express International Rally.
ARGH!
KitWetzler 10-16-2001, 10:31 PM I'd love to help out if you're looking for instructors... my car has no race tires right now, so I don't need any serious track time, but I've driven the track quite a few times. (1:47s in a not heavily modded M3) I'd be glad to ride along, etc.
And yes, this is the same Kit from the other track events, and yes, I have cured my habit of changing CDs on track. :)

stracos 10-17-2001, 05:04 PM mp3 encode all your cd's, burn 'em on a CDR, and then get an MP3 compatible stereo in the car.
Problem solved!
Stracos
KitWetzler 10-17-2001, 06:41 PM yah, I just need to find a deck with electronic skip protection! coilovers + 40 series race tires + cd player = no music for a whole lap! :(
Rallytime 10-18-2001, 12:32 PM What are the hours? Start time and finish time? I am going to guess until sunset right? I just found out that my company xmas party is that night!
Thanks.
GarySheehan 10-18-2001, 01:19 PM Hmmm...for all the new guys out there going to the track for the first time, understand that Kit is just joking around. The race track is no place to be listening to music blasting through your speakers. There's way too much other stuff going on that demands your attention.

Thanks, Jerry C
