My front tires are starting to show signs of balding. My brother suggests I go ahead and swap the front and rears. I did this with my old Buick :D but was wondering if that would have any negative effects on the AWD system.

You should get 4 new *identical* tires.

But anyway to answer your question, just jack the car up on 4 jack stands, remove tires.

Move front tires to the rear, move rear tires to the front.

It used to be a steadfast rule with older radial tires to not swap sides, and I still follow it.

So RF --> RR RR--> RF

same for other side.

I'll assume since you have a 2001 that you are running the stock RE92's. They are unidirectional so you can swap them front to back left to right.
Be aware that some tires (Kumho 712's for example) can only be swapped front to back on the same side (without removing the tire from the wheel)

Keep a close eye on the tire wear, the RS's seem to like to wear the insides of the tires.

I recommend checking tire wear everytime you check the air pressure in them (once a week)

I believe the owner's manual indicates the rotation method suggested by remarcable, and I would follow that.

It also suggests tire rotation every 6K, and I would also follow that.
