does anyone have any pictures/projects that include midbass drivers? im about to get started on my doors with kicker 8" midbass drivers and diamond 5.25 (m3) components. my focals are too bright for me.
Any suggestions with placement of drivers? this is going to be fiberglassed. i will finish off my trunk with a diamond mac daddy 12.8 sub, but i love my midbass and got these for a really good deal. thanks in advance.

Sorry, no pics for you but something to consider.
If imaging/staging is particularly important to you, might wanna consider putting the 5" forward to the kick. I realize it's easier to do the two drivers in the door and mod one panel only. I'm assuming the 8 will go in the lower/forward corner of the door... anyplace else in the door for the mid is going to be bad in terms of path-length (not that the factory location was particularily good in the first place). You might try correcting w/ TA, but nothing is better than proper placement. I'm going down the same path in spring... active system w/ Bit one, 8" aurasound in the door, and a/d/s 4" component set most likely to go in the kick panels. FWIW anyways... ![]() |

heck ya!. glad to know you are going the same route. i am, of course, going for imaging. all around great sound is important.
i thought about kicks, but im worried about the clutch, but I am sure it wont be too much of an issue only being 5.25, but if i punch it with my foot, ill cry a little bit. i will have to see my options when i get my car back and place everything. |

Just my luck... new pics and my work computer doesn't show photobucket... :/
Everything's a tradeoff... you just try to pic the gear that will work best in your application... I'd prefer a 5 1/4" for the mid (lower the crossover pt from mid to midbass) but space constraints to the kick make me lean towards the 4" to keep the kicks smaller. Sometimes you just gotta go with what you have though and hope for the best. I wish I could get started on mine but in ND it's already too cold to lay fiberglass in the garage and I really don't feel like putzing with spaceheaters for something that can wait til spring... ![]() |

DANG token! that looks amazing. thats the idea i had but was also thinking about putting in kicks.
im debating on what you are doing focusd. both are great ideas. the "ideal" sound should have the woofers close together so it sounds as one. but which one is functional is best. |

Sexy yes, but the mid is firing into your knee. Do you want your audio to look good or sound good? Being a Saab person at heart I have intimate knowledge with 4" components and no factory locations. A 1"-4"-6.5"/8" component set can sounds absolutely fantastic.

To be honest they sounded better then any other Subaru I had been in, so I had them made. They may have worked better in my car due to the fact the racing seats changed your seating position just enough and gave them a little more air space in front. I don't know, everyone has their own idea as to what sounds good and works best.

They look great but I'm w/ Chad on this one... even w/ time alignment there's only so much you can do to fix speaker placement electronically. Path length from the ear to mid is critical to soundstage/imaging. I don't doubt they setup sounds great, but from the SQ/Audiophile side the arrangement is compromised.
Not knocking the workmanship... it looks great! |

Pathlength is obviously important, but in a compromised listening position such as a car so the best you're going to get is panned monophonic (NOT stereo) and it's a near field environment it's not nearly as important as we try to make it out to being. If you're going for absolute perfect staging then yes. For most people? Not that big of a deal.

It's not near field... it's car field (words of Mark Eldridge... not mine).
![]() But I will agree... for MOST people... it's fine. The OP seemed very open to input so far as what would be ideal... so I'm tellin' him what I think. Last edited by couchflambeau; 11-08-2009 at 12:51 PM. |
