Just thought I'd share what I came up with today...
![]() ![]() It uses the two dome light screws and the two rearmost grab-handle screws. Very sturdy, good location and good view. The drops and cross-bar are aluminum flat, the braces are aluminum "L" channel, and they're bolted together with 4 small angle brackets and some 6mm bolts. It's pretty easy to put in and take out. Everything is available at home depot. Will have some sample video after the weekend. |

Does the camera sit above or below the flat bar?
If above, won't the rear view mirror get in the way? And I'm assuming you'd only use this when all passengers are wearing helmets. But you're right, that is the best in-car camera location for really capturing the feel of what it's like in the car and not just artistic shots. Hence this is essentially the location of incar cams when there is a full cage inside. |

Below, upside down. I plan on removing the rear view while using it. It's actually far enough away that helmets aren't needed*, but i only plan on using it for events that require helmets anyway (rallycross).
* well, for the front two seats. EDIT: I may make another one that drops lower, to save myself the processing required to invert the image, but there is less clearance for the camera that way. I'll do it when i own my own camera. Last edited by sniper1rfa; 11-06-2009 at 03:20 PM. |

You need to check with who you run with. Not sure that would fly on the tracks I run.

This is a nice setup if you dont have access to removeable headrests...
But if you do, another simple solution is to get a peice of PVC pipe, drill 4 holes where the removeable headrest's poles can slip through and drill a hole in the middle with a camera bolt sticking up. Easy, and under $8! |

That's a nifty setup, but jc is right. Take advantage of the headrests. My buddy did a home depot-style setup for the same price and it's very effective.
This setup would definitely not be allowed in some of the sanctioning bodies I run with. |

That is not safe, even with helmets on. That should not pass tech at any event.

I attach a monopod to the passenger seat via the headrest. It's not quite centered - closer to the passenger side - but lets me get a pretty good shot out the windscreen.

Seriously? It terminates behind the seats and is bolted into the car in four locations. How is that unsafe in any way? |

In a big impact your seat could deform and the mechanism that holds the back of your seat could fail and you have a nice spear sitting just behind your head that is well bolted into the car.
