View Full Version : goodyear eagle f1 ds-g3, WR vs YR rated tires, opinions wanted
i noticed tirerack has both Y and W rated goodyear eagle f1 ds-g3's.
the W is *significantly* cheaper at 88$ vs 135$ (for 215/45/17)
other than max speed rating, will there be a significant sidewall stiffness difference? will the handling on the Y-rated tire going to be that much better to justify the $47 difference per tire?
on a side note, between the ds-g3 WR vs BFGoodrich g-Force T/A KDW 2 vs Sumitomo HTR Z II, which would you guys choose? (all around the same price point)
thanks,
jkoc

No. You're not going to be going 160 MPH+. I wouldn't worry about the speed rating W vs. Y too much.
You can't beat the price on those Goodyear F1s. They're awesome tires to begin with. I just bought four of 'em.
Uncle Scotty 05-22-2006, 01:05 PM ...look at the load rating....not the speed rating
krzyss 05-22-2006, 03:07 PM The biggest difference is load index. 87 for 88$ and 91 for 135$.
There is mail-in rabate too.

UltimateLurker 05-22-2006, 03:10 PM Z is all you need, but W will work fine, and forget about Y. Also, the GS-D3 owns the HTRZ II as if it never existed, don't even compare those two tires.
Luke@tirerack 05-22-2006, 06:50 PM the bigger difference is the load rating of the two tires ... the "Y" rated tires have a higher load rating thus have a stiffer sidewall and will offer better steering response and handling

So for track the Y and if never on the track (and gf/wife friendly) Z?
the WR load max is 1200lbs.. while the YR load max is 1356lbs.
the wrx 2006 stock tires are something like 1350lbs "XL" as well..
is this a problem going with a lower load rating tire than stock?? i think no?
z&cobb 05-23-2006, 11:20 AM Twisty hilly roads modified car, some dirt, much braking and turning.... stiff sidewall with some run flat ability = good
Stock car, routine commuting.... lesser sidewall = maybe doesn't matter
jaypine 08-18-2006, 07:05 PM Does Tire Rack still have the 215/45/17 Goodyear Eagle F1 DS-G3 WR for $88? I saw the Ys for $135, but no Ws.

I have a set of xls and sls on similar 17" wheels. I can attest to the xls being crisper in the brake-pad-smoking twisty hills. However, the sls are not too bad after experimenting with tire pressures a bit more than I had to do with the xls.
