View Full Version : Clutch woes: Quality brands?

I just ate up my second clutch in this car too quickly and am searching a replacement that I would like to have last for a while.
Of those on this board who have tried various brands and types of clutches, what would be a good recommendation for me to use?
I spend more than 50% of this car's time autocrossing or road-racing, and it's probably laying down around 350 HP using the stock WRX 5 speed tranny.

Would a 6 ceramic disk type setup outlast a stock STi clutch package???

Did you read that sticky about clutches in the sticky at the top of this forum? No......you didn't....otherwise, you would have posted your torque and not your HP as HP as ZERO to do with a clutch. Read the sticky, then search clutch reviews in the car parts forum. If you have a specific question, please post again.

Unabomber, I appreciate the constructive critcism, but: Not only did I read the sticky, which speaks nothing about the expected longevity of the various types of clutch systems but I did a search related to same with few results.
I can say I only found one post that offered insight into the lasting quality of disk types on this board and it was from Kingpin: "Hey Ben, As Clark mentioned I dropped a 6spd clutch in my 5spd last year. I had already tried several aftermarket clutches and didn't find anything that I liked. The stock STi clutch and 6spd is inexpensive and is a great replacement. We usually carry them for $300 with flywheel. Let me know if you are interested. Thanks. Mike"
Given that, I wrote this thread asking for theory of which type might last the longest for my car's setup. (I have not had my car dyno’ed, so I don't know the torque right now, but it has a new vf34, STi pinks, Walbro and management)
If I post this topic in the car parts board, I'll get IM's from 100 dealers trying to sell me everything they've got.
To reiterate: Has anyone who does road racing (and/or autocross) found a long-lasting quality minded clutch system?

Hello my friend we had this discussion the other night. What clutch did you eat up?I'll be glad to help and give you some insight of which clutch seems to be lasting longer

Thanks Eddie,
I just went through a ClutchMasters setup that is organic but has about 60% more surface area than stock with a special cover designed for the extra size.
I do tons of autocrossing and road racing, so I am hard on clutches.
I'm considering carbon-fiber or a 6-puck ceramic style?!?!

My input:

I run a Spec Stage 3 with circa 300AWHP. It NEVER slips, but it also shudders, engages harshly, and if you try to slip it during a launch, for as much as 1 second, it WILL overheat and then it will slip in every single gear for the next minute untill it cools down again.
I won't be buying a kevlar clutch again, if that helps you.

That does help, thanks. I'm finding that the vendors are not selling many Kevlar disks and I'm beginning to see why now.
Does anyone here run one of those Exedy twin disks?
