Not sure how well something like this might work, but its interesting just the same....
Thought auto-xer's might find it interesting as well.....

adhowe70 05-24-2006, 10:07 PM Similar products have been around for years. Autocrossers have been using them since last century. :p
PossumK 05-24-2006, 10:14 PM It's portable and convenient to have, but it's slooooooow.
Picard 05-24-2006, 11:07 PM I have the Airman Inflation Station (http://gateway.canadiantire.ca/driver.php?fileid=1408474396669459_140847439667027 1_845524443281586_) but the battery doesn't retain a charge well enough to significantly inflate 4 car tires at one go. It's just good enough to top it off a couple of psi.
mofugga 05-25-2006, 09:12 AM i use one of these campbell hausfeld compressor (http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=3992) works great

Same here, works for me just to top em off.

There had to be one......... :p
I know they've been using portable compressors that plug into cigarette lighters, but I've never seen one like this.....
I figured it'd most likely have a battery issue given the amount of air most inflat to.......
sachilles 05-25-2006, 12:37 PM I've a pretty active autocrosser etc, as of late I've betting getting into off-roading(have a rover and a jeep). Air is a critical thing off-road, and I think they(off-roaders) do have a couple of things worth note for us on the weekend warrior tour.
There are several ways to do on board air, that can generate enough pressure to run power tools...and easily increase pressure in autocross tires.
An on board air compressor(electric). Several companies including ARB, Viair(sp) make compact on board compressors. They could easily be added to any car, with minimal wieght. They can be very expensive though.
Air conditioning compressors can be converted to on board air setups for very cheap money. That means you lose your A/C unless you run a second compressor...however for many of you that would cause an unacceptable drop in power.
Both of the above would require some sort of air storage tank inline to be effective with air tools.
Lastly, is CO2. Many carry around portable Co2 containers with beverage regulators that can hit 150psi. The downside is that you have to refill container periodically. However, its portable. Has the power to run an impact wrench, and fill tires all weekend long. There are companies that market devices for this purpose(powertank), but they tend to charge a premium for something you can create yourself.
They all would inflate tires much quicker than the cigarette lighter pumps. Overall, it would take up the same room or slightly less than the 10 gallon air tanks people bring, yet would have a greater capacity to dispense air.
VTSubieRS 05-25-2006, 12:41 PM hey sachilles..never thought i'd see you on here. It's Jodan- (xcellr8edaudi) from dubsnorth etc. i just happened to see your name on here so i thought i'd say hey. sorry to jump into this thread like this.
sachilles 05-25-2006, 12:50 PM selling the blue audi to buy a wrx...if anyone ever buys the audi.
You have a subie?
BlkWRXWag 05-25-2006, 01:04 PM I have a very similar cordless compressor that I bought at Target. It works great - the battery lasts a full weekend of topping off tires. I took it to Atwater and it was used on a couple of cars the whole weekend without loosing a charge. If it does lose a charge, it has an attachment that you can plug into your cigarette lighter. I think it pumps air just as quickly as other cigarette lighter pumps.

See in the picture how they are pumping up a bike tire? They work great for that. Car tires, not so much. I got a Coleman cordless air compressor and thought I could use it at the track. I tried to inflate one tire 2psi and the engine seized. I think I will stick with other sources of air.
wrx2.0 555 05-25-2006, 02:16 PM I actually used to use an old firemans air tank that could hold 3000lb's. We put a regulator on it and a standard air hose and could run tools, etc. but mainly used it for filling tires.
Problem with this is having the tank tested and the valve on it is unique, apparently, and has to be filled at the fire station.

The cordless Airman Inflation Station that I have has to pumps. One for high volume (like air mattresses, etc) and another for high pressure. It works fine for bicycle tires and car tires--it's just that the battery charge doesn't last that long. It comes with an adapter so you can plug it into your cig lighter, too.

WillysPU 05-25-2006, 10:37 PM Would one of these http://www.sears.com/sr/javasr/product.do?BV_UseBVCookie=Yes&pid=00915200000&cat=Compressors+%26+Air+Tools&subcat=Air+Compressors+%26+Inflators&vertical=TOOL&ihtoken=1 hold enough air to run an impact wrench to remove lug nuts on 4 tires? Probably not eh?
PossumK 05-25-2006, 10:38 PM There's a guy on our autocross team (drives an EVO) who uses a hand pump. Hey, it works for him. :p

That is what I use now, just for topping off. Even though there might be 135psi in the tank, the tank is small, so it runs out quickly.
So to answer your question, I'd say no...
This in combo with a good cordless impact would be all you need for tires and lugs...

not really enough.
A CO2 canister of the same size, can fill tires and run air tools about 25 times as long. CO2 is stored to thousands of psi.
One reason I go with this setup is have a kegerator at home, so I need the setup. For me its a matter of having the correct air line attached to the canister. Convinced the wife I needed a backup canister for the kegerator, and voila, I have what I need.
You can buy a co2 canister for a about $75(filled) at your local welding supply store. Surf ebay for a beverage regulator that regulates above 100 psi, which shouldn't cost you more than $20. Then you just need your air house.
Or you can just buy a ready made setup from this company.http://www.powertank.com/charts.specs However, you'll pay a premium.
Course, if you like beer ;) all you'll need is a tap, a spout and a way to keep a keg cool once you have this setup.
For me it just made more sense, as I already had most of the stuff to set it up. If you don't already own air tools, you are better off buying an electric impact and an electric pump.
makofoto 05-26-2006, 12:29 PM +1 for campbell hausfeld compressor @ Home Depot
+1 for Target. I hear they have awesome pit bikes too.

I must have had the Coleman POS version because mine blew less air than a stale fart.
Butterfingers 05-27-2006, 11:27 AM Co2 is 750 psi at room temp. The thing about Co2 is that when you compress it to its critical point (around 750 psi at room temp) it changes phases from a gas to a liquid.
Liquid co2 is much more dense than gaseous co2 so a small tank of co2 compressed to liquid phase can literally supply 100 times its liquid volume.
when you use co2 the liquid flashes back into gas.
Think of water and steam. A single pot of water can be boiled to fill an entire room with steam. Its the same way with co2.
In order to get the same volumetric density of c02 air would need to be compressed to over 6000 psi. There are very few pressure vessels that can store air to that pressure and even fewer compressors than can compress it to that pressure.
no-coast-punk 05-27-2006, 11:49 PM On the old supra road race car we got a big nitrogen bottle and a regulator. Origionally it was just for maintaining pressure in the n20 reserviores on the motons, but one day we decided to use the n20 for air as well. Could fill tires/shocks for a whole season and N20 expands much less with heat resulting in more even tire pressures throughout the day. A bit on the pricey side initially for the bottle/regulators, but a bit cheaper to fill than C02.
BIGSKYWRX 06-18-2006, 09:07 PM Just bought a Campbell Hausfeld rechargable unit (the one that has the flashlight) as I was heading on vacation after a two day event and didn't want to lug my air tank. I must say I'm very impressed- used it for two days (along w/ a few other folks :)) and it never hit the orange light (charge getting low).
Walmart even had it on sale for $35 :)
