View Full Version : Racers: Clutch preferences? (Long lasting)

Of those of you who are racing your WRX's a lot, what type and brands of clutch systems do you prefer. I'm looking for longevity over grabbing power.
I've heard you can't do much better than a stock STi package put in place of the stock WRX one, but I have to wonder about a 6-puck copper\ceramic style with springs too. Cintered iron seems like it would last a while too?!?!?
My car sees mostly racing time, and I'm due for my third clutch change in two years, I'd like to go to something that should last a bit.

Thanks-

I'm running an Exedy hypersingle cause I like the lightweight of it. It's definetly grabby(I have to rev to just over 1300 or so for a smooth take off). I run the car as a daily driver and Autox it reguarly in SM class. It fairs well, I'd get another one maybe I'd switch to the twin disc for the simple reason of spreading the load through two discs instead of the one.

What kind of racing are you mainly doing?? Sounds like you're a drag racer if you're wearing clutches out that fast.

what clutches have you been using in the past?

I do mostly road-racing at a local track which can equal over 40 miles in a race day.
I have used both a stock replacement, and a 60% larger surface area disk and plate setup by a popular vendor.
Heat seems to be the culprit. My engine doesn't run hot, but the heat on the disk is too much and they disintegrate.
I hear that carbon fiber disks work well hot, but I don't know one person who has tried that. The dual disk systems sound good on paper, but again want to see who's actually tried it...
I'm looking at a 6-puck ceramic now, but am not sure of the longevity.

Thanks Porter,
I called the guys at Competition Clutch, and they're working with me on an IronMan setup. Those look like the answer!

RPS Turbo Max...

Its been working good for me so far. Although I haven't run it on course yet (only 6 weeks old), I do lots of track events and I can tell it is going to work out well. It performed well at the Dragon meet (4 round trip runs) and at my first trip to the drag strip (~15 passes).

It is quiet, no shudder/ shaking on engaugement if you are careful, holds the power and is cheap compared to teh twin-disk stuff.

Tray at TopSpeed can get them a a pretty good price. ;)

We just ran stock in the USTCC WRX. Good feel and lasted forever.

The TurboMax does sounds strong from the writeup.
Thanks again Gary Sheenan, was it a stock STi style or bone stock WRX clutch system? (My stock one lasted a good while...)

Has anyone used the IronMan setup from Competition Clutch yet?

Primitive sells a sprung center puck disk that works fine.
