View Full Version : Good Race/Rally Seat for "Big" Guys?

Hey Everyone,

I am doing some seat research for a future project of mine. I know the Evo 2 from Sparco caters to bigger dudes, but I am looking for other options (hopefully cheaper). I see lots of cheap racing shells for smaller folk, but not much for us ogres... I don't care about looks, colors, or brands. I pretty much want a good quality seat (hopefully light) that will hold someone who is 6'3" 240 with a 38" waste and wide shoulders in place at high speeds. Needs to accomodate either 4, 5, or 6 point harnesses. Anyone out there have any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

Scott French

Also: This doesn't seem to fit in the cat, but it's not a dress-up/interiour questions so...

Jeff Lloyd is looking for one, too.... (he's treekiller/vivace).

I recommended that he LOSE SOME WEIGHT! :D

I use the el cheapo Corbeau Forza II. It's perhaps the lowest quality seat ever made, but it's pretty wide.

Hey Jon, sounds good too me! $249! That's more like it! Did you have to use the stock rails/mount thingies or did you get new ones with the seat?

Thanks for the info!

We used Corbeau's sliding rails. This is a bottom mount seat so those cool alloy brackets you see with other seats don't work. It's actually pretty nice being able to adjust, and they've never moved under rally conditions.

If you're looking for a real competition seat, try the Sparco Evo 2.

http://www.sparcousa.com/pseats_competition.asp?id=86

It's even FIA homologated.

Unfortunately, it's twice the price of the Corbeau, but perhaps it's also twice the seat. I've yet to hear good things about Corbeau seats.

As with all aftermarket seat purchases, however, always try to find a local dealer to visit and sit in the seat. While there are a variety of pads available to help snug the seat up a little or increase the lumber support, general fit should be obvious when you sit in it.

Tried it. MUCH narrower. Really it's all about how wide your hips are. Plus it's a shell seat = ouch when the bumps start.

I have Sparco Evo2s in my Mustang, and they're a snug fit on me (5'10", 195-200#, 34" waist). No way they'd fit a guy who's 240# with a 38" waistline. There is an Evo3, which I believe is another inch wider than the Evo2 (which is an inch wider than the Evo). But, as StankFootz already pointed out, he doesn't want to spend that much.

Hey, Marquis, I just bought some Corbeau Targa RSs from RallyKid. So far I am very impressed. Build quality is pretty good and the fabric is very comparable to the Sparco Torinos. If you're up in Lansing sometime, let me know you can check 'em out. I saw a Lotus Motorsport 190 at Gingerman one day with Corbeau fiberglass seats in it, with Lotus embroidered on the headrests, so some of there seats must be O.K. I doubt Lotus would put an inferior seat in a race version of one of their cars. I do wish the reclining adjustments were a little closer together, though, just can't *quite* get the seatback where I want it. Oh, well, for the price, you can't beat 'em.

I thought rally seats had to be fixed (i.e., no adjustment)? For competition, at least...

Sliders are allowed. Reclining seatback is not.

Hey I'm fat and I'm Proud

(in my best "fat bastard" voice)

Actually I'm a sexy Bastard.....
Look at Me, I'm Sooo Sexy.
Now give me the baby.

Rocky ordered a pair of the MOMO Start seats they have the biggest size of the entry level seats, are light fiberglass and should be fine for me. 230lbs 38" waist 5' 10" tall

if not I'll sell one of them and OMP makes a nice widebody seat for like $300 it's steel tube frame and heavy but it is big and cheap.

Hey John will those sliders work with any bottom mount seat?

Jeff Fat enough to try out for NASCAR Lloyd

I can still wheel this fat ass around pretty quick.

Well, I'm 6'-2" and 240 lbs (36" waist) and my sparco evo 2s fit me very well indeed. Snug in all the right places, and incredibly comfortable.

I used the Sparco Sprint with the steel frame then adjusted it with a Port-a-power to improve the fit I'm 6'2" 280 with a 42" waist and love the quality and fit of the seat I actually prefer it to my RS seats we also used the sliders so our service kid can move the car around

I have a Corbeau Forza, and it *is* pretty cheaply made. The bottom-mount hardware sucked, and barely mated up to the stock bolt holes. Also the seat is stuck on the highest position because the genius doing the mounts never tested them out (only thing I can think of). The sliders are OK, but I have to re-tighten the bolts every few thousand miles.

The seat is comfortable for me, but everyone else who has sat in it thought it would be horrible for daily driving. I have a bad back & neck, and the seat forces me to use proper posture. Therefore it is more comfortable for me.

I'm 5'11" and about 150lbs. When I got the seat I was 185lbs and it was a little bit snug, but now that I've lost weight it is actually feeling a bit roomy.

Not a quality made seat or brackets, but it is cheap and does the job. My only worries are what will happen to me in a head-on collision... will those brackets hold?

Thanks for the help everyone! I think the Corbeau Forza II sounds pretty good for my uses. It's not going into my daily driver so long term comfort isn't a huge issue. Being built cheaply doesn't really bother me much either since this seat will be put into what essentially will be a junkyard car. Anyway, the deciding factor: $249! I like it already!

Thanks again everybody!

I run the Evo 2's in my Legacy Rally car and I fit very comfortably with a 44 waist!

Take a look at Beard or Mastercraft offroad seats. They are steel tube seats with a suspension bottom generally used by the Baja guys so they are plenty tough. They are much more comfortable than shell seats I've used and far more durable than Corbeaus.

I consider sliders a must - easier to fit different size codrivers & drivers. Definitely a plus if you are ever trying to sell it.

I've been thinking about switching to Beard or Mastercraft now that the Corbeaus are falling apart. They kind of ruin the cool, techy rally image though. Maybe if I install twin shocks and take off the fenders. :D

Here's some thing different;

I use the Kirkey's (Drag model) seat in my rally car, I like them and thay will only set you back about $160.00 each. Thay are not F.I.A. approved but are fine for the SCCA rally series and are pretty comfortable. I'm 6'3" and about 280 lbs..................Look in to it, Don't listen to all the nay sayers out there............:o

Those Kirkey seats are funky lookin'!

Those Beard Ultras look super comfortable, decent price, and lots of options. I'm suprised more people don't use them! Must be hard to mount in a Subie or something.

Just got my EVOII mounted.....

I'm 5'10, about 190, 35" waist and I float in it. It will be fine for messing around this winter, but it's not a good, snug fit like I'd want for competition. I'll eventually change to an EVO, Corsa or Pro2000, but anyways......
(and you can read into that that my EVOIIs will likely be for sale this coming spring)

here's a quick picture of the mounting system. It's a BRIDE subframe/slider (shipped to me from Japan), with a Sparco Steel Side mount welded on.

There is a seat called Sparco America and it is a lot wider.

Those Beard Seats do look comfy...are there any Sube owners out there who have them installed? I checked the seat dimensions, and they are all at least 21". I think that might be too wide for the WRX...the stock seat is about 18" I believe.

I emailed Beard about fitting an Impreza weeks ago and never heard anything back. They do seem a little big to fit, though.

Hey Jon,

How would you rate the Corbeau at comfort when things get a bit rough?

They're OK, I guess. The main comfort issue is the sides of the seat are two metal bars wth almost no padding on them. I wish the foam were much higher density--I compress the thin, soft foam right away so I can feel the frame. The shoulder support is helpful without being too confining. They do have some sort of suspension under the seat which helps on hard landings. The thigh support is great.

We have Beard seats in the sand rail. They are very comfortable. Especially when compared to the fiberglass buckets with 1 1/2" soft foam on them. Man those seats sucked. They are definitely a large seat though.

Have any of you looked at the Tenzo R reclining seats? I have heard a lot of people don't like them because they are too wide. If you are looking for a wide seat that might be an OK choice. I found them online for about $235 if I remember right. The fixed back ones were only $185. I will be checking those seats out at SEMA on Thursday for sure.
