View Full Version : external wastegate
effect 05-30-2006, 02:32 AM i tried searching anyone have a how to guide
i read you can almost completley stop boost creep by getting an external wastegate.. was lookin at the 38mm Tial wastegate.. just tryin to do more researching.. on install ups and down's.. so far more ups then downs.
waktasz 05-30-2006, 03:14 AM You definitely will stop boost creep with an EWG. You aren't talking about getting one with your stock turbo though, are you?
effect 05-30-2006, 03:27 AM that's what i'm researching if i could great if i cant i hafto find a porter for the wastegate.. as i dont know how to do it myself..
if i its possible with not to much labor to do with stock turbo i would go for it.
but i'm tryin to find previous post and write ups to see if its been done and what problems occured.. and so forth.
effect 05-30-2006, 03:29 AM btw i just wanted to thank the people helping me out with their time and knowledge i do know there are some who flame..those who have taken the time to help out thanks alot..
import111 05-30-2006, 04:00 AM It will be cheaper to get the wastegate ported on your turbo. But, my personal opinion is against porting wastegates. I would personally rather get an external wastegate setup. But to each their own.
effect 05-30-2006, 04:28 AM great but do you know if its possible on stock turbo?? and what labor is needed is their welding? or all bolt on?? is their a guide??
thanks for all help.. car kicks so much ass with that downpipe i cant believe it but that damn boost creep is keeping me from enjoing it anyinfo would be greatly appreciated
WR^2X 05-30-2006, 06:48 AM You could certainly run an EWG with the stock turbo... If you plan on upgrading turbos later, you might as well buy an EWG setup now anyway. Ultimate Racing has a nice setup going for $550 shipped right now. This is what I'm running with my 20G. The only thing you'll need to worry about is figuring out how to keep the turbo's internal wastegate shut. Some people get them welded, but I just built a little metal bracket that connects the arm to the heatshield mount.
04RCSTI 05-30-2006, 07:23 AM weld it shut...theres easier ways to fix boost creep $ wise though...
effect 05-30-2006, 10:46 PM thanks guys can you get me a link to that site? with the ewg kit? or other respectable vendors that carry this?
thanks alot
reallyslow 05-30-2006, 10:57 PM like the one guy said u can run external on any turbo, i to have a extreme boost creep problem, i have bought a Turbosmart 38 wastegate that i am going to put onto a APS header/up-pipe combothat will hopefully solve my problem. i would sugguest going with the turbosmart because it is not only cheaper but their 38 flows more then Tial 38 but its up to you... hope this helsp and good luck
effect 05-30-2006, 11:24 PM how reliable is the brand? and where is it sold?
reallyslow 05-30-2006, 11:42 PM when dealing with a wastegate i dont really think reliability is a problem but it is a highly recomended brand that is top of the line. It is one of the better brands out there in my opinion

Turbosmart is an excellent brand, best Ive seen. The smaller the exhaust turbo housing, the bigger the effect an EWG has in HP and torque. Ive seen a 90 degree elbow welded on the passanger side of the turbo exhaust housing, and the EWG sitting on top with the dumo tube going along side the DP.
Phil Jr. 05-31-2006, 01:00 AM I would not recommend going to an EWG setup on the stock turbo. You are gonna have to take the turbo off the have the flapepr welded shut anyway, so why not just get the TINY bit of porting required to eliminate creep?
Pulling the turbo, welding the flapper, spending $550 on the EWG, and then even more cash to tune it seems foolish when all you need to do is port 1mm of material to eliminate the problem.
If you plan to go to a larger turbo in the near furutre, then an EWG is prolly well worth it.
reallyslow 05-31-2006, 01:11 AM u r correct but also external is more efficient and there have been proven power gains with tuning, plus its the ish
effect 05-31-2006, 01:40 AM nice yea i been looking at the 18g and 20g turbo's
but not gonna be for a while thanks everyone who responded.
yea its expensive but i dont want to redue all this when i need the wastegate even if i wont need it till a year from now
An EWG is the way to go specially if you are going to upgrade later it is lloud as isht though but I love mine.

Depends where you are having the gate dump to :D
offset 05-31-2006, 10:24 AM I would also say if you plan to upgrade, then an EWG is a good step for now.
