Toyota recalls 1 million cars worldwide

Automaker says majority of vehicles affect by recall located in Japan, notes it has received no reports of accidents due to defects.

TOKYO (Reuters) - Toyota Motor Corp., the world's second-largest auto maker, said Tuesday it would recall a total of about 1 million vehicles globally to replace faulty intermediate shafts and sliding yokes.

In a filing with Japan's Transport Ministry, the company said it would recall a total of 565,756 vehicles in Japan, including Wish, Isis, Prius and other cars built between September 2002 and November 2005.

A Toyota spokesman said the recall would also cover about 400,000 units outside of Japan.

In conjunction with the recall, Toyota said it is conducting a "special service campaign" in the United States for 170,000 Toyota Priuses, which the company believe to be the only Toyota vehicles that may have the steering malfunction.

The company told CNN that the difference between the "service campaign" and the recall is that they have not had any incidents with the U.S. cars that appear to have the same power steering systems as the international vehicles that have had problems.

The company said it had received no reports of accidents from the defects.

Toyota as a matter of policy does not disclose the cost of recalls.

Well, if this costs them a grand a piece to fix, and they made $11bn in profits last year alone. it will cost them 10% of that. NOT good for Toyta, but they can weather this with little worry I would think.

This is actually very good of Toyota. It shows you that hey care and improves their image in my opinion. I rather have a company find a fault in its product and fix it for me then try to cover it up or not care like alot of other auto companies do.

+1 for Toyota

Exactly they do the recall before any accident cause by the defects, it actually give them a positive image. I guess they really learn the lesson from Mitsubishi.

Heh, this is funny. Toyota buggers something up and does a recall, "yay Toyota for fixing my car." Domestic manufacterer buggers something up and does a recall, "domestics are garbage! Look, they have to do a recall!" I find the duality amusing.

What are you talking about, there is nothing wrong with our brake lines. Or the steering wheel locking up all of a sudden.

+1 for toyota fessing up. Although I believe nissan has done the biggest recall so far of 2.56million vehicles!

Maybe Subaru can "step up" and put new synchros in their transmissions instead of just poo-pooing it. My nearly 20 year old ford bronco has 200k+ miles and will snick into 1st while moving with nary a sound--my WRX grinds like hell trying to do the same.

Thats because Toyota fixed it before it caused a problem, and Ford waits until your house burns down.

did anyone bashing toyota happen to read that " it has received no reports of accidents due to defects"? Toyota is just overly cautious and doesnt wait untill their A-arms break, their cruise controls set on fire, or sychros asplode.
