View Full Version : Don't clean rims with this!
SubaruPilot 10-12-2001, 01:19 PM I used Meguiar's rim cleaner and look what it did to the stock calipers!
Whatever chemical is in this product creates a hazy almost oxidized blue mess! I guess the calipers are relatively pourous and soak it up or something. Grrrrr.
Bunuel 10-12-2001, 01:31 PM yeah. happened to me too. it eats the paint.
Turbo4me 10-12-2001, 02:46 PM Rims are really clean though.
Curt
*ducks, runs*
nuetz 10-12-2001, 02:50 PM now you have to paint your calipers !!!!
purplegrape 10-12-2001, 03:06 PM Now you can paint them blue to match your car!!
Seriously...that really sucks....

DuckWRX 10-12-2001, 03:15 PM I almost bought that stuff the other day, glad I didn't:) .
ImprezedRS 10-12-2001, 03:42 PM I used some similar stuff to clean my rims one time and it ate the red paint off my clipers and then they looked orange. I just got a set of 4pots and painted thme red and did it again, and had orange 4 pots. Well I decided to go a different route this time instead of painting the caliper, I'm going to polish them.:D
garface 10-12-2001, 03:49 PM Yup, happened to mine. Kind of looks like marble. I really don't care though.:)
Charge 10-12-2001, 04:11 PM Actually, Simple Green did that to mine as well. I just scrubbed them clean though, the next day. Doesn't look as bad anymore, but I'm gonna have to paint them probably.

HoratioCaine 10-12-2001, 05:04 PM Class, what lesson did we learn today?
If you're going to use solvents to clean the wheels, remove them from the car first.
Rotate those puppies while you're at it.
HoratioCaine 10-12-2001, 05:05 PM BTW I use Westley's Bleche White and it hasn't done anything like that. The wheels get shiny clean, future brake dust doesn't adhere very well (wipe it off with a dry cloth), and it turns the tires black (and cleans white if you've got it).
Mike DTD WRX 10-12-2001, 05:09 PM The stuff cleans the wheels pretty well. Just don't let it get on your calipers are paint.
Be patient!
SoLo OnE 10-12-2001, 05:34 PM crap I thought that was just oxidation from the water.
DoodieHead 10-12-2001, 08:50 PM If anyone wants the perfect rim cleaner that will not effect paint and get rims really clean, try something called "Simple Green". I have a set of Team Dynamic Monzas (white), and my rims are harder to keep clean than anything. I tried every rim cleaner on the market and my rims would not turn white. The really nice thing about it is that it is bio-degradable and non-toxic (Safe for use on paint). Try some. :)
JNaubur 10-12-2001, 10:04 PM P21S. 'nuff said.
It will not harm anything. For a while BBS was giving you P21S rim cleaner when you bought some of their rims. Even Porsche authorizes it.
Works like a charm.

bratmantlz 10-12-2001, 10:29 PM damn that sucks man hope it cleans up for ya!
2pt5RS 10-12-2001, 10:47 PM Man, that really sucks. I use A2Z wheel cleaner, and nothing has ever happened like that...sorry to hear about that man.
:alien:
Jasno999 10-12-2001, 11:31 PM Just clean your rims with water and an old t-shirt. It is more work but looks great and does not do anything bad to the car...
Verist 10-13-2001, 01:18 AM Happened to me also, I guess I'll have to get some 4 pots. Anyway to fix the damage? Like scrape off the top layer?

WRX Fan 10-13-2001, 08:45 AM I don't think your rim cleaner did that.
Mine went the same way without cleaner. Just paint the calipers, looks much better.
Adrian128 10-13-2001, 08:59 AM I think heat plays a big part, not the cleaner. I used a similar cleaner on all 4 wheels, but only the front ones got discoloured. The rear calipers were still like new. The front brakes get a lot hotter than the rears. :)
Scrapy Doo 10-13-2001, 04:38 PM and thats why i use Dawn soap and a wheel brush :)
mrbell 10-13-2001, 07:19 PM It's the heat and the cleaner... my calipers look like that too... I think it's most cleaners too because I've seen this alot...
rsr911 10-14-2001, 02:25 AM P21S!!!! I have been using it for 17 years. The absolute best wheel cleaner made. It will not harm
anyhting either.

Dre2932 10-14-2001, 02:29 AM Thanks for the info.!
Verist 10-14-2001, 02:39 AM Can they be painted now? Even after they have done this. Will it look nasty? Will it require extra prep work, like sanding etc.. I would be greatfull for any info.
Thanks in advance,
Regan-
Silver_Bell_WRX 10-14-2001, 04:48 AM Well I guess I will have to paint my calipers now. I think that I will look into finding a different rim cleaner.
e_a_olson 10-14-2001, 03:33 PM How about you take your wheels off and use that Meguires? Then you don't spray it on the calipers, if you are really concerned...
Choose 10-14-2001, 03:58 PM What I do is use good old wax on the rims. It's maybe a little bit more work but it does a great job.
And what the washing does not get off the rims, the wax will finish it off. (I do not leave any kind of dirt on the rest of the car before waxing!)
WRXAngell 10-14-2001, 08:00 PM I have used Meguiar's wheel cleaner many times on my stock WRX wheels and had no such problems at all. Meguiar's is endorsed by BBS. I think you have another problem like heat or leaving it on too long or using too much. Anyway I hope you have good luck fixing the look of your calipers.
