View Full Version : I finally found where that rattle comes from!
GooseMan 10-12-2001, 03:58 PM Wow! I'm the first poster!!!! WOOHOO!!
OK, heres the thing. I've had this annoying rattle coming from my dash for a few months. Its coming right from the center top mount dash storage bin thingy. So yesterday, I was checking to see if there was anything in there, and there wasnt! But I noticed that when I hit it with my hand, I heard a coin rattling. But theres NOTHING in there!
Turns out, theres a dime stuck underneath the storage bin!! I can feel it inside the latch opening! Its right under the metal latch (on the bin itself, not the lid).
Any idea how to get it outta there? Can I remove just the little metal latch thingy, or do I have to remove the whole storage bin/air vent surround?
ARGHH! Stupid dime!!!!!!

topcover 10-12-2001, 04:17 PM Can you actually see it? If you don't it may feel like a dime but it could be a washer... maybe?
Revision 10-12-2001, 04:22 PM Just pull the bin off and turn it upsidedown a few times. Basically it is just 2 screws and a yank.
SlideWRX 10-12-2001, 06:06 PM do you have a magnet to pull it out? I mean, if it is easy acces, just no grabable. maybe a big refrigerator magnet might do the trick. It should be far enough away from any delicate electronics to be OK. How about tweasers?
Austin 10-12-2001, 06:24 PM The vin plate on the front drivers side of the dash was rattling in my car...
structureboy 10-13-2001, 12:47 AM I have had an annoying noise under my hood? in the center of the car I havent been able to fid out what it is?? Every time I hit a bump its like "bongn dong bubong" I cant explain the sound in words but man is it annoying!! Oh well waht are you going to do about it?:o

I don't think you can pick up a dime with a magnet. :(
Penphoe 10-13-2001, 01:43 AM but a Canadian dime sure is!
Goosman, give it a try, but becareful, cauz the magnet might want to stick to the car itself!

Yuhin 10-13-2001, 05:11 AM hm... try attaching a sticky gum on a stick
FirmWind 10-16-2001, 09:52 PM Hey Yuhin I tried gum on a paper clip straightened out, it worked! I had a similar problem to Gooseman, there was this quarter stuck in one of the railings of the seat. I'm not sure if you were serious about your suggestion, but hey, it worked for me
Penphoe 10-17-2001, 03:03 AM can you give me the exact part number for the paperclip and gum you used? Did you chew the gum afterwards?
No need to answer my questions -- just padding my post count! :D

I think the VIN plate rattles on my 02 RS also, but once the interior warms up it stops. It's vey anoying and it would not rattle when I took it back to the dealer.
Evaider 12-03-2001, 11:15 PM I have this annoying rattle coming from somewhere behind the clock / next to the dashboard I cant exactly pin point it but its there in the area somewhere. I dont think its change cuz I havnt had any in that car cuz I am too broke after buying my 02 wrx to be able to have change! lol!
Herbie 12-05-2001, 04:35 PM Got the same rattle. Only when cold. Sounds like behind the cupholder or the clock. Doesn't go away when I whack the dash with my hand. VERY annoying.
Dealer can't find it, might just have to tear my dash apart and spray that insulating foam crap in there. that'll fix it! ;)
