Anyone read the preview in the latest issue of Car&Driver? VW has a Golf GT (not GTi) that has a "twincharged" 1.4L Direct-Injection Engine that is kicking out a whopping 170 hp and 177 lb-ft of torque. According to C&D because of the supercharger it has essentially no turbo lag and gets to 0-62mph in 7.9 seconds (ok, that time isn't great, but that is VW's estimate not an actual time by the magazine). It does all that and still gets 29 mpg (European urban cycle) and 46 mpg (extra-urban cycle) - which is a combined 38 mpg.

In the article they even stated that this will be just one of a few engines in the same family (including a 1.6L that will probably make 190hp).

Since when did VW become one of the more innovative companies in the automotive world? First that fantastic dual-clutch tranny, and now this! If they would only inprove their reliability though. :(

(the magazine just came yesterday, so I couldn't find anything on C&D's website yet)

Hazdaz this engine was released in August 2005. I think C&D was just late releasing the information. The below link has detailed info:

I don't think we will see this engine in its current state in the US. Kinda like the current generation FSI don't run in lean burn mode due to increased particle emissions.

I like the engine and reminds me of the old Lancia Delta Integrale.

2005, eh?! Wow. Maybe C&D is previewing it now because we might finally be getting it state-side. Espesially since our gas is supposed to finally be getting clean enough in '07 (?) to really take advanatrage of direct-injection.

Either way, I am quite impressed with any engine that can make the equivalent of the Impreza 2.5L RS's power from only 1.4L's.

That is not bad, and I wouldn't mind rocking it in a VW Fox if they'd bring it here.

supercharged turbocharge! A thing of beauty!
170 hp and 0-60 in just under 8 secs thats is pretty bad, that is what the mini does ( not the S) with only 115hp.
i don't know why vw are so slow! the engine specs always look nice but the performance is always dissapointing. and the MPG don't rely on those numbers, a co worker drove the new A4 withe same engine a stuff as the new gti and he said the thing wasted gas like crazy.

Yea, that is what I thought too - with 170hp and it weighing in at ~3100 lbs, it "should" be in the low 7s - but like I mentioned, the figure was a VW estimate, and many automakers are very conservative when it comes to their perfomance numbers.

Didn't Subaru originally list 6.x seconds for the WRX's 0-60 time? Most of the magazines where actually getting 5.x seconds. Might be the same case.

very nice looking vw, im pretty sure the 06 wrx kicks its ass though! if the 06 audi s4 v8 can't take it then no r32 can take it!

If I am not mistaken Europe has standard (EU has standard for everything) to measure car acceleration, which requires the vehicle to be loaded to half of its payload. At least it includes driver and passenger.

I might be wrong.

PS Such configuration is nothing new. Piston engines in planes during WWII had similar caonfiguration. No computer to control though.

It seems less complicated than a Hybrid setup, but with the benefit on highway (where I do all my driving) and better performance. I think a polo with a 1.2 super/turbo/DI/dual clutch at 140hp would be a great commuter.

I wonder what kind of potential this could have if applied to a 2.0-liter for performance purposes...

Well if the 1.4L can make 170 HP, and a 1.6L might be able to make 190 HP, then simple math tells us... umm, lets see... carry the 1, multiply by pi, divide by the hypotenuse... hmm, simple math tells us that the 2.0L would make like 532HP and 784 lb-ft of torque. Or something like that.
