7500mi on 10w30, burned about a quart of oil, but looks like I can easily run longer on the oil!

Prodrive axleback, IC hoses, ported IC elbows, so it's basically stock. Mostly freeway miles helps, too, with a daily commute of 20 miles which takes about 25 minutes.

You always have some of the best results with M1 in a turbo Sube out there! The freeway driving does help. Although if you go much farther on the OCI you'll be in 20 weight territory (not necessarily a big deal, as you know, depending on your comfort level). Are you going to shoot for 8,500? :)

I don't think the oil will thin out any more. If anything, it should thicken up a bit with more miles. Typically oil will thin out the first couple thousand miles as it shears a bit, then start thickening up as the lighter parts of the oil start burning off/evaporating. If you sample the oil at 2-3k miles, that's probably about as thin as it'll get.

I always forget about the rethickening. I suppose it would take numerous UOA's to find the exact mileage an oil thickens back up.

A lot of short trips and the oil will "thin" out sooner as water/fuel build up in the oil. High RPMs and heat will beat the oil more and thin it out. Steady moderate speed freeway is probably easiest on the oil, you may not see much thinning at all.

The wider the weight spread of the oil, the more it will thin out and thicken back up, too. A 5w40 will shear more than a 5w30 given that the base stock is similar.

The Napa gold one I get is about an inch in diameter bigger compared to oem.

I've heard the oem is now smaller because of the header being so close to it, they think it heats the filter unnecessarily.

:eek: 9,000 miles on Pennzoil 5W30? I presume you're no longer under warranty.

IIRC, drees has always received great results with an OEM air and oil filter (i.e. smaller for turbos). I'm not sure what all the carrying on is about with chopping up filters searching for the perfect filtering media, when OEM works well. :banana:

Besides OEM air/oil filters, I've also tried Amsoil foam air filter, Purolator oil filter, the generic filter from PepBoys (same as Purolator as far as I can tell). I think I even had a Fram in there when the car was nearly new. They all seem to work about the same, so I just stock up on OEM units from Jamie/SubieGal @ subarugenuineparts.com every now and then. :)

so you risk clogging the oil filter by running it 7k+ miles because you don't want to make a mess? ;) I always change the oil filter half way through the interval, if you do it when the engine/oil is cold it's really not that bad. I go between 8-10K with whatever oil/air filter is available and all UOA's have checked in just dandy (cept the KandN, got some high silicon on those intervals so i stay away from that now).
