View Full Version : ultimate EJ20
bluice619 06-05-2006, 04:45 PM Im lookin to build a bullet proof EJ20 for daily and midnight warrior ;-), looking for opinions. RIght now this is what I already have: pretty old '94 EJ20G with a bad turbo, needs rebuild, leaking oil from every corner of the engine. Instaead of just rebuilding it with stock stuff, I might be able to get a hold of a ver6 EJ207 TYPE-R + sti 5sp tranny + wiring harness and ecu, front sti inverted struts, 4pot front brakes for about $3400 (yes, i know, cheap as f**K!!). What i want to do is use my EJ20G block, and put in all the ver6 internals, heads, intake manifold, VF29 turbo. Reason for that is of course because of the ej20g close deck block. As far as I know they are the same bore and stroke. What do you guys think? What about engine management on ej207? I am swapping all this into a '00 RS coupe (USDM TYPE-R!!!)
THAWA 06-05-2006, 05:00 PM I think the EJ207 would be a better engine, and easier to do.
kheff46 06-05-2006, 05:19 PM either way it'll work fine. closed deck vs. open deck or semi closed is moot point nowadays. the 207 is already complete, run it! build the EJ20g and sell it, or ready it for your back up engine. the 207 ecu would run the 207 obviously, but not sure if you mixed and matched engines. but i'd assume it'll run the ej20g ok.?? --keith
Matt Monson 06-05-2006, 06:43 PM If it ain't broke, don't fix it. v6 STi engines have been known to turn 340chp on an engine dyno in stock form. Just drop it like it is. Plus, if you went with the Ej20G block, you would be raising the CR a fair bit and potentially looking at detonation issues and all kinds of tuning challanges. The older heads have larger combustion chamber volumes and exact numbers are a little hard to come by. You would need to CC both the Ej20G and the Ej207 heads and then calculate out your CR from there. And you MUST use a thick HG on the Ej20G because the pistons clear the deck. In short, I reiterate, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Closed deck means NOTHING...
Hurley 2.5 WRS 06-06-2006, 12:39 AM how are its bearings? :p
Scoobie Steve 06-06-2006, 01:20 AM Biggest thing missed here was the Ver 6 crank wont fit in a G block, and I have no idea why you would want to swap parts in the G block. Just run the STi engine.
bluice619 06-06-2006, 02:38 PM i guess no point in doin it, semi close is close enough. I'll just build up this ej20g and drop it into another suby then, and as soon as i get the ver6 ej207 + tranny, im going to drop it in. Now, just patiently waiting for my engine to be shipped...
THAWA 06-06-2006, 10:08 PM Can't you machine the #5 bearing surface to accept a thrust bearing on a Phase I engine? And vice versa.
Kaymin 06-07-2006, 01:24 AM mind helping me out on getting some good prices like that? Thats the exact setup i'm wanting right now....
bluice619 06-07-2006, 04:14 PM I can ask the guy Im gettin the parts from, see if he got more. Your best bet is ebay, that's where i got my ej20g. This ver6 motor was in an ebay auction too, i was lucky that i found it. This is everything I am getting:
ej207 ver6 + ecu + harness
5sp w/ harden gears
complete ver6 red struts and springs
steering knuckles
sti 4 pot front calipers
sti 2pot rear calipers
axles
L arms
The guy is pretty much selling the whole car without the body, for only $3400USD shipped!

Send a link to that auction, I can make sure you are getting what you paid for. Many sellers on ebay have no clue what they are selling.
Kaymin 06-07-2006, 09:18 PM if your auction is for that white one with some damage, its definatly not a version 6
bluice619 06-08-2006, 03:00 PM nope, it's not that white front clip. The seller already took the auction down coz i made him an offer. He had pictures of all the parts in there before he took it down.
