View Full Version : Fuel Pressure Cause Check Engine light?

I’ve had my ’99 2.2 non turbo for about 4 months now without any problems. This weekend I suddenly notice my check engine light come one… Then I realize my fuel gauge is at the ‘E’ line. I filled her up (only 3 gallons?), disconnect the battery and reset the ECU and when I reconnected everything it started up fine and the check engine light was gone and the fuel needle went back up to ‘F’. I was happy for about 5 mins, only to realize the check engine light is back on and that the fuel needle is down at ‘E’ again?!?

Is this is a common problem with the car? With what I described dose it sound like it maybe the fuel pump or some kinda of sensor? The car starts and dives just fine so I am not sure if it is the pump itself. Any ideas on what or where I can check to isolate the cause? And link to a how-to guide would be great since I am not very familiar with the Impreza yet.

The fuel level sensor in the tank is probably shot. You should get the code read (do NOT reset the ECU again), Autozone will do a free scan. Get the code in Pxxxx format and post it here. It will likely be for a fuel level sensor problem but you want to know for sure.
If the level sensor is malfunctioning it will have to be replaced.

Thanks for the reply!
So you are saying I can bring the car in to AutoZone and they will do a free code read of the ECU for me in Pxxxx format? Let me know if I am reading you correctly. I will try to get the code this weekend and post back. :)

As for replacing it, is it hard to do? I would think it should be easy, but just wanted to hear what you think as I have never taken the car apart. I am guessing is just involves removing the rear seat and I should be able to access the tank.
