So after several months of resting, having trans work done. My Subie will no longer kick on the A/C. When I pop the hood and listen, nothing happens when the A/C is turned on, I know that normally you will hear the compressor kick on. Another problem is, the Defroster isn't working, now I know that majority of the time, these two will run off the same compressor, however, when I turn the defroster on, I get this sound almost like someone letting the air out of a balloon slowly, but not nearly as obnoxious, almost like a slow air leak, go figure. At any rate, my car is an '03, and all of these worked fine before the work was done. My questions are, A: Do you think that the Freon has leaked out? B: Is it possibly an electrical problem? Now someone was telling me, that is it is low on Freon, the compressor sometimes won't even kick on at all. I also heard, that is it isn't low on Freon, and you try and charge it more, that you can screw it up just as much. Any help would be appreciated, I am hotter than a Saigon Wh*re lately here in N.C. And if its not too much, give me a quick run down on what I need to do to recharge it, I have recharged much much older cars, but never anything this new. Thanks

happened to me too. i would take it somewhere to get checked. it turned out i had a cracked ac line. recharging it would be a waste of time.

Most likely a loss of refrigerant (R134, not Freon) but the only way to tell is to put gauges on it. Take it to a shop that does AC work, not worth messing with yourself unless you have the proper tools and knowledge.

Did you add an aftermarket TMIC?

No, stock TMIC still. Just trans work, nothing else. I think I am going to just take it to a shop, that seems to be a general consensus, it just pisses me off because the car just sat, and now all of a sudden it doesn't work  I want to say it sounds a bit fishy, but none the less, I won't be returning to where it was worked on again anyways, so I am going to just cut my losses where they're at. That is something that I have learned the hard way in the last couple of years...

Just something to think about. If the refrigerant level gets to low, then the compressor will not kick on. Look on your ac lines and see if you see any kind of buildup of dirt or wetness and that should tell you if you have a leak.

I'd suggest taking it to an A/C specialists' shop. You'll be more likely to have the problem diagnosed correctly and fixed correctly for the long term; be prepared to have parts (like the drier) replaced if (as suspected) you have a leak in the system. It's not just a simple matter of recharging, as leaks also allow in moisture and thus cause internal damage to the system.
