Nissan Stops Sale On Some 2006 Model Year Four-Cylinder Altimas and Sentra SE-Rs [June 2, 06]

GARDENA, CA (June 2, 2006) – Nissan North America, Inc., today directed its dealers to stop selling certain 2006 model year, four-cylinder Altimas and Nissan Sentra SE-Rs because of reports of excessive oil consumption while it continues to investigate potential causes.

The condition, if not detected or addressed properly, could lead to the potential for engine damage, or failure which could result in a fire in extreme cases. The National Highway Transportation and Safety Administration has been advised of Nissan’s action.

Nissan estimates that about 100,000 Altimas and Sentra SE-Rs built between January and May 2006 may be subject to excessive oil consumption. There have been about 215 reports of excessive oil consumption, mostly from rental-car fleets, and 17 reports of engine fires, resulting in one minor injury.

Nissan is aggressively working to find a definite cause and solution for the condition.

Nissan is advising owners of these vehicles that they should frequently check and maintain the engine oil level. If the engine oil level is kept at the proper level, there should be no engine damage and no risk of engine failure or a resulting fire. If the engine oil level is not registered at all on the dip stick, customers are urged to immediately add oil and bring their vehicle to a Nissan dealer.

In the interest of customer satisfaction, Nissan has extended the engine portion of the Powertrain Coverage of the vehicles’ warranty on Altimas and Sentra SE-Rs built during the January to May 2006 period to 84 months or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first.

Nissan is taking these actions as part of its commitment to provide the highest levels of product quality and customer satisfaction.

Owners of Us previous generaction think its the pre-cat and Nissan is just covering it because its a huge issue that Nissan refuses to deal with in the correct manner and is leaving current owners to purchase headers in order to ditch the pre-cat.

I had an '03 Spec V with the QR25...at 20K miles they replaced the engine due to excessive oil consumption....they need to extend this to other years besides the '06's.

i was an 02 spec v owner, and so were most of my friends..........we all had this issue. most went thru at least one motor, all burned oil, all burned up pre-cats. on top of the loose butterfly screws that killed the rest of the motors. they need to rid of the qr25.

I do hear a lot of QR25DE Altimas that sound very tickyyy. I'm guessing they were low on oil and the fools didn't know.
I read that the precat can disintegrate and go inside the engine because of the emissions control thing something like EGR...

This is kinda funny. Today I was driving to work and a guy passed me in a newer stock Altima at a pretty good speed and all I could think was "man that engine sure makes a racket".

I love and miss the SR20DE. They should have put the SR20VE in the new SE-R's. The QR motor is absolute crap. Glad I paid more for the WRX (I considered the SPEC V, but hated the red seats and the shift linkage).

My G/F has a 2002 Spec-V. I use Mobil 1 10w-30 in her car and have no burning issues. People who use 0W should expect burning. I burned a quart in my RSX-S every 3000 miles and it is "normal". The only thing wrong on her car is that both of the O2 sensor warmers have died. But I checked looked at the sensors on ODB2 monitoring system and they still work fine. I think the motor is great, has an amazing amount of torque. Initially that car pulls harder in every gear (except 1st) then my WRX.
