Looking at the local (Fairbanks) STI's that are for sale. My goal for the car would eventually be a solid 11 second car (11.60 to 11.80) on pump gas (which in Fairbanks means 91 octane).

Biggest concern regards tuning the car, are there mail order tunes availiable for the subie that are literally spot on like in the mustang world?

Are bolt on mods enough to run the times that I'm looking for?

Thanks in advance,
Brad

First of all brad you'll be running 90 octane here in fairbanks. I'm not sure what kind of times guys are putting down with rotated mount kits (GT35 etc), but I would look that direction. Of course you'll have to do a clutch also at those power levels. I think that a good intercooler, clutch, turbo upgrade kit, tune, and you'll be close. I'm really just guessing though. You're not going to buy one from affordable are you? Those two are way over priced. I'd look at geralds for 26k, and he has already down some very tasteful mods. Brake lines, harness's, rear strut bar, and some other stuff.

JP,
I've driven all 3 including Geralds'. The 04 at affordable is definently over priced by a $1000 dollars funny that's the consignment fee. The 05 is actually a little under average retail, and is also on consignment. Was very interested in the 05 until I went to park it and at full wheel lock the dif started popping like a 4x4 on dry pavement. Driven Geralds liked the car a lot, and it's the best price, but I'm turned off by the body/paint issues. But I may be able to get over that with the price.

JP do you have any info on my tuning questions? I think I harrassed your wife today. I'm your local sanitation engineer :)

Are you sure the DCCD wasn't set to full lock. If it was it most definately would have popped like you described.

Dan, I was told the 05 is your old car. Initially the DCCD was set to full lock but both myself and Dave Savigliono reset it.

Brad, My wife thought it was so funny that she called me at work. Stop by any time you like on the weekends. I think that if you are going to do some major HP stuff to the car (11's) then you will need some custom tuning. I would probably suggest you go with a cobb access port because I know of several shops in the states that will tune these over the phone with your log data. The utec (which I run) is a little more tricky, and can be a pain in the a$$ to get right, but it does the job and has its own positives also. Some of the shops in the states I've spoken with recently recommend just going to a fully stand alone like a Hydra, but obviously that takes a bit of tuning.

If you really would like to go that big than you'll be spending some cash, and you might as well budget in a trip to seattle for a good dyno tune with a reputable tuner. Thats my plan, but I'm going to wait to see where I decide to stop before I go tune, because I don't want to do it twice.

What are you going off of for pricing on the STI's? If you are using Kelley Blue than you are way off. Most banks will not except kelley as the value of the car, and almost all of them universally except NADA. I would check your pricing there. I know that a 2001 RS that I looked at recently was about $10,000 in KBB, and more like $8,500 in NADA. Thats a big jump. At $29,000 for a used STI I would just go get a new one for a couple grand more.

JP,
I have been usning NADA to check the values, and KBB is a joke that's why banks will not use them. Who cares what the asking price what the asking price of used cars is, I want to know what there really worth.

With the prices difference of new vs. used I was thinking just like you get new, so I did swing by Auto Service Company yesterday, unfortunately they don't have the pricing for 07's out yet, but I imagine that I could get one for $33 to 34'ish. The other option I'm considering is finding a used one in the states with some mods already I know that just casually looking that I've found a tastefully built '06 for $29.

I think that you asked for some pics of the Talon that I have for sale over on akmotorsports, I just might swing by with the car if you want (easier for me to do that than clean it all up and get pics of it).

Ok, 11.60-11.80 on pump 90oct. Is it possible? Yes, but it will cost more bucks than with 104 race fuel. Example: My car has 330whp on pump and 380 on 104. Big difference, you will probably need the following parts to get to there:
Turbo: gt 35 or better (great power band for our AK winters)
Exhaust:
Injectors:
FMIC:
Big Maf:
Engine Managment: Access Port is great but w/UTEC you can switch maps in seconds more importantly w/UTEC you get launch control & flat foot shifting
Alchol Inj:
Excellent driving:

Good luck,

362whp on 104 (302 on 94 (Sunoco -yeah lower 48)) will *just* get you into the 11s if you care about your car. I launch like a grandma and touched 11.9 at Englishtown. Cost @$8500

Can this even be done in Fairbanks?
-On crappy gas?
-With no dyno nearby?
-And still have a hope of passing e-check?
-And still be "fun" to drive (meaning not spending days chasing CELs or diagnosing driveablity issues).
-No track nearby?
-No tuning support?
And the list goes on..

The question is not CAN this be done in Fairbanks, the question is SHOULD this be done in Fairbanks.

If you've got money burning a hole in your pocket, you'd be happier to spend it on suspension upgrades and BPMs rather than give yourself a tuning nightmare/timebomb.

As with all my posts, this is just my observation. Feel free to tell me to go piss up a flagpole.
I just remember what it's like to have a car become "old" at 50,000 miles. Doubling the whp will do that...

Feedback is what I'm looking for so everybody's opinion is of value to me, you all know more about these cars than I do. I'm not rich or anything, but I do have a decent amount of disposable income that will go to my next "fun" car. By the time that I get in the low 12's this car won't have to pass any emission tests, or anything like that. In reality it wouldn't have to pass emission test from the get go, but I just can't stand the idea of spending this kinda of money on a car and not being able to drive it on nicer winter days (anything above 0 ).

Dan do you know who own's your old STI know, and you wouldn't have his # would u?

Wow can't beleive its already back there. No i dont know who bought it. I treated the car really good. does it still have the mudflaps and auto start on it? Need too go by and take it for a drive for old times. 29,000 is probally what he owes on the car. If i could get the same deal on a 06 or 07 as i did on that car i would by new. But i dont think you will get that kind of deal with autoservice.

No dealer cost is around $32k so I could get a new one for 33 to 34. Still has the mudflaps, no autostart though. Supposedly the guy just can't afford the car.

Yea the big payment was killing me every month. How many miles on the car now? Auto service is a good place too have service done, but now they really dont deal very well on cars. My understanding on the STI is that they sell it for MSRP only.

Dan, they seemed open to the idea of below msrp, but not dealer cost. I bought the ex-wifeus mobile there 2 years ago Camry, and got $1500 off msrp without even trying.
