View Full Version : 1/2 oil quart overfill in MY06

Obviously overfilling is bad, but this quantity (1/2 quart =~ 1/2 liter) is something to worry about?

Please note that when cold the stick is marked between the full and the hot-full mark. But with the car hot and when passed five minutes, the stick is marked whell over the hot-full mark (more or less where the stick gets twisted).

1/2 quart might be enough to cause some smoke on startup but if you are that concerned, just drain a little bit out.

Thanks.

I just drained the excess. Should I check any parts that could be 'contamined'?

hey I had the same prob so I let a little out and now my oil is dripping at the bolt area... Think I need a new crush washer? and if so this does mean Imma have to buy new oil soooo would I also need an oil filter or the one I just put in there a few days ago should be okay

Your existing filter is ok. It's only been filtering oil for a few days. You can also reuse the drained oil if you drain it into a perfectly clean / uncontaminated receptical, but if you used coventional and not synthetic, you're probably better off just putting in new oil after you put the crush washer on the drain plug.

well for some reason it stopped leaking =\? idk Imma change it any way, Ill be putting in new oil, Ive driven with the new oil filter for like 300 miles already so, I might just change that out as well. Ah this sucks $30 spent down the drain. just because my dumb ass forgot one small peice. Also Im at 16,000 miles any kinda maintence stuff I gotta do now?

another question, Im running 10W-30, if I put 5W-30 in it then I would def have to switch out my oil filter right? Also is there any kind of performance gain when running 5W-30 compared to 10W-30?

Changing oil viscosity would not require you to change your oil filter. It would also really be overkill to do a whole full oil/filter change just for a crush washer, but it obviously won't hurt anything other than your wallet.

The only thing you need to do(well...not even need, just should do) if you want to change the oil type, is pull the filter and empty out what oil is in it. You won't get all of it out, but most will come out. Then fill up with your replacement oil.

Warning! Odds are, the 4.8 quarts or whatever your car calls for...it probably won't need all that. Especially if you use the same oil filter. There'll still be a bit more in there. Nothing dramatic, but since you just overfilled it, no sense doing it again slightly.

My suggestion is fill it up .5 quart shy of what's recommended. Maybe a bit more. Start the car for a few minutes, let it cool. Check the oil level again about 20 minutes later. Then slowly add just a bit. Aim for still being just shy of the fill line. I usually fill mine up to about 4.3 quarts. Then take the remaining bottle with me for a few days, and top it off next time I get gas. Oil level'll still be well over the "low" range and no fears of over filling. I can nurse it up to "full" as necessary.

get you a fumoto valve to replace the oil drain plug. Next time this happens, it's a snap with the switch on the fumoto valve.

Also, do you not use the gauge on the last quart of oil? The oil container that is. They all have the measurements on the side.

I too did the exact same thing. wasnt paying attention and was talking to my wife and DOH all 5 quarts.
noticed smoking on startup. so I drained some down to just below the F line. but I still get smoke on startup intermittantly.
any ideas?
thanks in advance

You spilled oil on something that gets hot and it's burning off, that's the smoke more than likely.
