Do 93s even take 134A? Check the labels under the hood; you might need the old stuff.

93 is most likely R-12. You will be hard pressed to find a shop that still deals with that stuff. It is over 300 bucks for a thing of it...You are probably trying to hook up an R-134 line up to it, but they are different fittings. Good luck.

Dude, if you do not know what you are doing with AC then you will likely do more harm than good.

And R12 runs about $60 a lb as opposed to R134A which is about $10 a lb.

And why are you trying to add freon to it anyway? If the air is not blowing cold then you have a problem somewhere. Find the source of the problem, fix it, then recharge.

What are your pressures like? (high side and low side)

93 was the first year for R134a on new model vehicles.

AS for it not taking the refridgerant, that's probably because there's already pressure in the system. You really should have it looked at by a qualified technician.

ben: last i checked R-12 was nearing $100/lb, but it seems as though the demand must have dropped because there's a brand new 30lb'er on E-bay for $350 shipped

Ouch.

Have not had to buy the stuff in about 3 years. Just got rid of the last of the tank about 3 month's ago. Guess I gave him a good deal on the last of it

Now I just send the R-12 cars to a shop up the street. I'm not stocking that stuff anymore

You can retro fit an R-12 system to an R134A as long as you get all the oil out and change the fittings. I've seen it done before and it's acutally pretty simple to do if you know what you are doing.

Doing a proper switchover isn't trivial, requires some special equipment (such as to pull a good vacuum in the system before recharging), and will result in a system that will only cool something like 80% as much as the original R-12 system.

i've converted quite a few cars, most R-134A systems normally have a center vent temp of 43-44 Degrees while driving, the converterd systems are usually around 46-47, R-12 had some insane 37-38 degree center vent temps

^^ and that is exactly why I miss freon. I fubared an AC pull one time and sent R-12 everywhere. Lesson? Don't mess around with it unless you have the right equipment or you're ready to have the EPA all upons. He also had a 93 impreza though. Perhaps the changeover was mid-year?
