View Full Version : Can't find anyone to install EGT probe in KC.
viodea 10-15-2001, 03:50 PM I called so many places today but none of them will install a EGT probe for me. Most of them don't even know what I'm talking about. They thought I wanted to install a oxygen sensor. There are 2 shops know what I'm talking about they they only do Honda or Accura :(
Does anyone know any shop that will do this for me in Kansas City area?
thanks
andy
After reading the title of this thread, I've decided I really don't need this right now. My temps are low enough thank you.

viodea 10-15-2001, 04:16 PM Are you sure :p After I saw your face -> (looks like burned badly  ), I highly suggest you install one on you

Future Subaru Driver1 10-15-2001, 11:46 PM dude any muffler shop can do it for ya. i believe if you look the threads on your probe are the same as the threads on an O2 sensor. therefore ask them to install an o2 sensor fitting...
i could be wrong
paulnose 10-15-2001, 11:50 PM Might want to get the proper weld on fitting from a performance shop if your EGT probe doesn't come with one. Then take a marker and put a big x on the manifold about 1 1/2" from the passenger side head and go to a muffler shop and have them weld the fitting on, most will do it. Then just run the wire yourself, It really isn't that hard to do. If you have the autometer EGT kit then the probe will use a 1/8 NPT fitting.
viodea 10-16-2001, 02:54 AM I have the greddy gauge.
The people at the shop had no idea what I was talking about. I don't feel comfortable letting them to install it. For those who does performance tunning, they don't do Subaru.
Here are some responds that I get.
Shop 1:
Me: Do you install EGT probe?
Him: What's that. Never heard of.
Me: Exhaust Gas Temp. probe.
Him: Oh, Oxygen sensor!!!
Me: No, not oxyen. Exhaust Gas Temp. Well, never mind.
Shop 2:
Me: Do you install EGT probe?
Him: Yes, we do. What kind of car is it?
Me: Subaru.
Him: Oh, we only do Japanese cars.
Me: It's Japanese
Him: I mean Honda and Accura.
Me: ..........
Shop 3:
Me: Do you install EGT probe?
Him: Yes, we do. What kind of car is it?
Me: Impreza WRX
Him: Sorry, we don't do Subaru.
Me: What's the different?
Him: Well, we don't have the tools and knowledge (I respect that. If they don't know what they are doing, don't touch my car).
Me: I thought you just drill a hole and put it in.
Him: Yes, but we don't do Subaru.
Me: .........
paulnose 10-16-2001, 04:16 AM it's kinda scary, but i'd say take a weld-on fitting to midas and tell them to put the fitting on the manifold. Then give them the EGT probe and say after the fitting is in the manifold, screw this in. Any shop that can put in a O2 Sensor can do the EGT. You just have to run the wire into the cabin your self when you get home, which should take all of about 20 minutes.
Good luck

burr101 10-16-2001, 11:08 AM hey quick question about EGT install. Do most people leave the manifold on the car when drilling the hole and welding on the bung?? i was planning on taking it off because my friends dad is going to weld it and i don't want to make him crawl under the car if possiable.
Also another question... where do most people locate the probe, not how far away from the block but on top, on the bottom, or the side of the manifold??
shaun
viodea 10-16-2001, 11:09 AM That's what I suggested in one shop and the lady (most likely a receptionist, she has no clue).
Some conversation smiliar to the perivous post....
Me: Can you just put that thing in just like the OS sensor?
Her: Where does it connects to?
Me: There is a wire goes to the desh board but don't worry, I'll do that part myself.
Her: Well, if you just want the part, you should go to the part store.
Me: No, No, No, I have the part already. I just want you to put the "PROBE" in and I'll run the wire.
Her: You have to get back to the dealer.
Me: What!? Can you just drill a hole and put the senser in as it's a O2 sensor?
Her: Sorry, we don't do that.
Well, with that kind of conversation, how do you feel? I don't think I'll leave my car in their hands :(
viodea 10-16-2001, 11:14 AM Does anyone know how to take the manifold off? Is it hard to do? I'm thinking maybe I can take that thing off, and put a "X" mark on it. Take it to a muffler shop, have them weld it as paulnose suggested. In this case, they don't know where it comes from. Maybe it'll be cheaper too :D
Patrick L 10-16-2001, 11:42 AM Viodea, call 913-962-0641.
Ask for Sven, he can help you out.
viodea 10-16-2001, 11:46 AM Thanks a lot!!! :)
redobs 10-16-2001, 04:18 PM Mine was installed by Exeter Subaru. So, I expect them to know what they are doing. It took two hours for them to do it! This included pulling off the manifold, so that shavings wouldn't get into anything. I think mine was the second one they did on a WRX. The first took a little longer since, they had to figure out where to tap the manifold. Here's a pic:

STiShawn 10-16-2001, 04:40 PM if you can pull off your manifold, drill your hole the right size for the bung, take it to ANY muffler shop that can weld, weld on the bung, install probe, wire and your done. Mine took 1/2 hour and $25 to get done....
viodea 10-16-2001, 04:52 PM STiShawn - did you take it off yourself? If so, how hard is it? It'll be nice if you have some kind of instruction and pic.
I heard most people recommand to install it on the 3rd cyclinder. It is on the left hand side (facing the hood when you stand in front of the car), right? Is it the one closer to you or further? I wanna make sure I know where that is in case they don't.
I talked to someone in town. He told me to a muffler shop he goes but no luck. The mechanic said he couldn't do it because he couldn't get into the manifold without jack up/taking off something (cross memblem (sp?)).
I talked to another shop in town. This one is better.... well, at least they know what I'm talking about when I call them. I'll check that one out either tonight or tomorrow night.
paulnose 10-16-2001, 05:49 PM It might be tricky, but i doubt you have to take the crossmember off, the up-pipe should meet the manifold just before the crossmember, but I am just basing this on previous subie turbos.
-Paul
Should be 8 bolts to get the manifold off the car. 3 on each manifold and 2 to the up-pipe.
viodea 10-16-2001, 06:04 PM Thanks Paul.
Are there pre-caution if I want to take it off?
Is there any tips and tricks?
Any nonos or gotcha?
Let's say I manage to find the 8 bolts and take them off, is there anything I need to be aware of?
Any input is welcome :alien:
thanks
paulnose 10-16-2001, 07:01 PM Not to be funny but make sure the exhaust is really cool
chkltcow 10-16-2001, 07:27 PM TopDog: I had already referred sven to this before you posted that... hehe :)
Yes, I'm from the Ricecop forum too :P
Peaty 10-16-2001, 09:11 PM I'm sure Hogan Muffler and Brake in Topeka will do it. Call 785 273-7200 and see if Kevin is there.
Peaty
viodea 10-17-2001, 02:47 AM Peaty - I'll try to avoid to go to Topeka. It's a long drive and I have to take a day off to do it. Do you know Sven? KCTopDog told me about him. I talked to him and he's going to do it for me. I just went to KCTopDog's watching him working on his tranny.
Peaty 10-17-2001, 08:06 AM Kool Sven is a good guy, glad you found a place to have it done.
lgkahn 10-17-2001, 09:03 AM exeter did mine too...

Take it off ... you don't want little metal filings into the turbo etc.
