View Full Version : %HP loss for an AWD?

Just wondering if AWD steals more HP than a rear wheel drive? I was checking out some dyno numbers on a vendor's site and it calculated out to about 20%? Normal auto is about 18% and stick is 15%.

WRX stock = 227
dyno to wheels = 180
net loss= 47
47 is X% of 227=20.7% loss of HP

Is this the norm for AWD?
thanks

Yeah thats about right...
SCC has showed something like a 25 - 30% loss...

Hey ... theres more junk down there then in a RWD car...
But since power to all four wheels...less wheel spin

Just remember that comparing dyno results doesn't really work because of the different types, local settings and such.

You are right about the AWD systems having greater hp loss compared to RWD and FWD. (One of the reasons car manufacturers like FWD layouts.)

Read a build up of the 2.5 RS to a turbo and on the AWD dyno they only got 94 HP at the wheels, from 165 at the flywheel. Can't remember the link though.

"Maybe I should get a job at the CT Emission testing station, they have a nice Mustang AWD load absorbtion dyno there"

It also depends where your dyno is. You can have the same car and same dyno in both CO and NY but you will make less power in CO.

Thats why they have correction factors biult into the program for the dyno...If its like a 120 degrees it will correct itself and give you an ambient air temp...like around 70 degrees or so..

Correction factors aren't necessarily correct either! But, they give an approximation of what the numbers might be.

I love my impreza but the loss in hp due to moving parts = too much. Just a small price to pay for the awesome control though.
