View Full Version : Subaru WRX Autograph Edition?
SanjuNana 10-15-2001, 06:36 PM Hmm ... interesting ...
SOA news (http://www.subaru.com/home/news/press_result.asp?inc=1&page=35)
"Subaru of America, Inc. has created a one-of-a-kind, 2002 Subaru Autograph Edition Impreza WRX featuring autograph signatures from some of the world's greatest tennis athletes. The Autograph Edition WRX was inspired by longtime Subaru driver and spokesperson, Martina Navratilova, and designed by Subaru of America, Inc."
Why the WRX? Why not an autograph edition Outback or something? Just seems a little odd to me ...
SubEd 10-15-2001, 06:40 PM Wow, that's nice! Will the signatures wash off?

eastbaysubaru 10-15-2001, 06:42 PM I heard somewhere that Subys are cars for lesbians, so now there's a WRX for all the Lesbians;). Why not a signature model with Burns/Solberg/Martin autographs (and Makinnen?). Hehehe.

That makes SO much more sense to me. Subaru has a great rally history. Who associates Subaru with tennis?? Especially the WRX?!
LordBass 10-15-2001, 07:07 PM Let's just hope we don't have to see that thing too much in Subaru advertising. ACK!!
As mentioned above, better off with a Rally Edition, which would kill Mitsu's total wussbag US OZ Rally Edition Lancer.

That's horrible.
a legacy or forester, I can almost understand.
but a WRX?
and who cares who signed it.. couldn't they have been more descrete about it? like a dash plaque..
SoobATV 10-15-2001, 08:52 PM wow, what an abomination... I have to second Fishguy on this one, why not another "lifestyle" car? The WRX has NOTHING to do with tennis... first L.L. Bean, now this? Man, I'm moving to New Zealand, screw this country!:) Hey, look at the bright side, it's not as rediculous the WB Chevy Venture. lol

SanjuNana 10-15-2001, 09:37 PM Thank god it's not a production model. There will only be one of them ...
The Subaru Autograph Edition WRX will be auctioned off to the highest bidder at a player's dinner in conjunction with the Schick Extreme III Tennis Challenge in Bellevue, Wash. on October 6th, 2001. All proceeds from the Autograph Edition WRX auction will benefit patient care and research at the University of Washington Medical Center Breast Care and Cancer Research Center.
T-WRX-02 10-15-2001, 10:00 PM A signature model WRX for tennis promotion? Why not an L.L.Bean Edition with a complete set of color coordinated gardening tools for the obsessively limp-wristed, latte sipping yuppy? C'mon SOA ... you folks spent megabucks developing a serious rally car and an image to go with it. (This took a great effort to change the company image from "sensible transportation for the elderly" to something a little more exciting.) Keep focused and don't alienate the thousands of Impreza loyalists who would not like to see a Subaru Aztec or some other abomination happen.:monkey:
Lifino 10-15-2001, 10:28 PM NA, give me a Red and White(Marlboro) with plates reading Tommi.
Lifino 10-15-2001, 10:29 PM NA, give me a Red and White(Marlboro edition) with plates reading Tommi.
I won't even mind when people stop me on the street to ask how I got a Mitsu Evo! I'll correct them and go on my way...
Spa2K 10-15-2001, 10:48 PM Okay, kiddies, I'll give some of you a few moments to remove your feet from your mouths to tell you (again) that this is a one-off WRX, donated by Subaru, that was auctioned off to benefit a cancer research hospital at the University of Washington. Of course, the reason Subaru chose the WRX is because it is the most promotable and visible vehicle the company produces. This was not a Subaru promotion, and this was not a tennis promotion. It was a benefit to help fund cancer research, as described at the hospital's site:
"This event is very personal for all involved. Last January, Honorary Chair and sister of Andre Agassi, Tami, was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 30. Just six months later, the Agassi family received the devastating news that the family matriarch, Elizabeth Agassi, would battle the same disease. Shortly thereafter, the tennis community was saddened to learn that Janet Stark, professional tennis player and Seattleite Jonathan Stark's mother, also faces breast cancer. In honor of their mothers, Tami, Andre and Jonathan have banded together with Seattle's tennis community to produce a first-class tennis event with all proceeds benefiting the UWMC Breast Care and Cancer Research Center."
The previous i-Club thread is here: http://www.i-club.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=92896&highlight=charity .
Even though the auction has already happened, I'm sure all you generous and kind-hearted souls will want to help the cause: https://secure.gifts.washington.edu/breastcare/gift.asp?source_typ=2&source=EHS

I still say it's butt-ugly, good cause or not. I think a tasteful silver Forester with a plaque on the dash would be a higher draw and much classier.
Ed
I think it is an excellent choice. More exposure the better.
SanjuNana 10-16-2001, 11:37 AM Of course it's for a good cause, no one was saying that it wasn't. I still don't get it though ... even though the WRX is the "hottest" car the company produces, I don't think it's the "most promotable and visible vehicle the company produces". The Outback is probably the most promotable, because it has a wider audience. And you've got the new Outback sedan that would have made a better fit for the charity, IMO. Regardless, I do actually like the body matched BBS wheels and would be interested in finding out who bought it ...
jk147 10-16-2001, 03:54 PM yeah it is ugly when they autography that thing all over the car. They should just have it in one section or something. LIke on the hood in the middle or something. Now it looks like azz.
SFsube 10-16-2001, 07:05 PM There is no golden rule that: good cause must = good fund raising idea.
The car looks like hell, and no woman or man I know (gay or straight) , concerned about cancer or not, would lie to themselves that is doesn't.
SF
I say take of the autographs and you have one bad a$$ car.IMO
I don't care if its pink.
I've had six Subarus. They're dependable and quirky--much like the people they've been marketed to since 1975.
So...will Subaru start marketing to candy raver Civic owners? Probably. Why? $$$$ It makes the world go 'round.
I know I'm a moderator, but taking the hat off for a minute...I buy a Subaru for dependibility. I have yet to purchase a car that can do 60,000 miles per year without exploding.
Maybe I just like it because I drive a Brat. :)
The Forester would've been a better idea, but when sales show that you're maxed out on WRXes, put out a special model.
99% of US culture just doesn't know what the WRC is, nonetheless SCCA Prorally. Sure, I'd like to see a special edition rally WRX, but I'm sure it would cost 30k and not be much faster or better than the current model. Just a nice set of wheels and some different floor mats.
