I just let the dealer put in whatever 10w-30 they use. I plan on doing this again at my 7500 mile service and then switching to Mobil 1 10w-30 at my next service (15,000). I got my oil changed at 1,000m, 3000, m and now again at 7500.

I let the dealer do my first oil change at 3k miles for three reasons:
a) it was free;
b) I'd heard that the drain plug and filter, as installed by the factory, were each a bear to loosen;
c) I'm naturally lazy and prefer the path of least resistance.

So that time, the dealer filled it with whatever (I think Penzoil) but I didn't even bother to ask.

The last oil change I did myself, at 7,500 miles (as per the Subaru recommendation). I filled with Mobil 1 5W-30 (the Subaru recommended viscosity). I used a Subaru oil filter (PN 15208AA060 (http://www.subaruparts.com/partsearch.php?partnumber=15208aa060&submit.x=23&submit.y=4))

jlyttle:
After the 7500 mile service, Subaru Recommends oil changes only every 7500 miles! Yes, i understand that it is crazy to run dino like that, 3,000 mile intervals are what i would do except that People say that the engine should "wear in" before switching to Sythetic.

BTW: i still didn't bring it in for the 7500 mile service, do you think that i should switch to sythetic now?

I did mine at 1200 mile, and every three till now...18k miles. You should be fine.

With all the toys now in attendance (v8 boat, 2 cycle jet boat, 2 suby's, T-bird and VW sandrail) I decided to go for the wholesale program from Amsoil. You can get their 7500 mile oil for $4.08 a qt. when buying by the case and the new severe service oils should work well in the bird (0W30) and the rail (20W50). Been using their filters anyhow. Shipping will be less with larger orders too.
