View Full Version : STi and LanEvo to ever duke it out in North America?

...as the topic states what do you guys think of the epic battle between the Subaru Impreza WRX Sti and the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VII?

It seems like the STi will eventually grace us in North America, just a matter of when...But for the Evolution, i myself feel that it is a different story. I don't think that the Evolution would reach a wide as a market as an STi would in north america. I think the nature of the Evo is too much of a 'raw sports car' for this market. Its ride quality is similar to that a of an Integra Type R. its rough, loud, and not luxirious enough to accomodate the tastes of the average car consumer. Sure it is a better handling car to the STi with its advanced yaw system and stuff, but dumb ppl with more money than brains want something with leather up the yin yang and the quietest ride in their sports cars ala euro (ie M5) cars.

just wanna see other ppl's opinions.

flame on! :)

If the STi and Evo come to America, don't expect very many. At the most 5000 of each but most likely there will only be 2000 of each. In either case demand will far exceed supply. So you better get your deposit down now.

Build it and they will come.

Or in our case here in the states...

Build it and they will pine for it.

Yes, both will be here, but until we find out what each car will offer in terms of performace, it may be really close like they are now, or one may just blow away the other.

Sport compact car seems to dissagree with you death_blossom (nice last starfighter ref. :D ;) ). They seem to be pretty sure about it. Sure enough to make the cover story: 'Evolution coming to America' (or something to that effect...). Check it out, not to many exacts, but some good indicators.

I think that the EVO will make its way here in a year or two.

As far as the EVO being too raw I would disagree

I have a buddy that drives a EVO V for track days and I must say his car is very refined. it has a very neat autmated climate control as well as a nice sound system. Also a Leather MOMO and interior similar to my WRX. At gingerman in the rain the active yaw was awsome, keeping the car firmly planted while other cars were all over the place.

I just hope that they all make it to america it will help the current lame front drive market we live in.

I fear the Evo coming over here because I might just have to leave my faithful Scoobie and buy one of those :(

There is a local dealer here in Southern California that has 10 different car dealerships... to make a long story short, they are merging two of the dealerships under one roof soon. Mitsubishi and.. yep you guessed it Subaru. Now imagine having both an Evo and an STI side by side on the same lot!

do those companies allow there lines to be sold under one roof?

It's not uncommon. There is another dealer in San Diego that has Subaru and Chevrolet under one roof. The one I mentioned earlier actually has Jeep under that roof as well, so it will be Subaru/Mitsubishi/Jeep :D

Starfighter? Actually I got my name from the CGI cartoon "ReBoot", just a lil' something that was mentioned like once. I guess its a reference to starfighter, i've also heard Commander Keen?

i didn't see that SCC. And my explanation of the EVO was from what i've read over the past year on various msg boards. But yah, i'd think that it would kick so much arse if the STi and EVO came over to the north american shores!

sub/mitsu dealer under one roof? just too sweeeet!!!

This might seem a little off topic...

If they bring over both cars I think they are going to be similar in specs and price so I have a ffeling people will choose either based on smaller preferences.

We'll see...

-taken from my other post-

Here is some very believable information from a source at Mitsubishi Motors USA about the US spec Evo VII. Take it for what it's worth.

- modified front bumper to pass 5 mph bumper test (duh!)

- It will NOT have a front mounted intercooler for obvious reasons. Instead there will be twin side mounted intercoolers located in a similar fashion as the single intercooler on the 2nd generation Eclipse turbos. This would mean that the oil cooler that is on the side of the JDM Evo VII would be moved to the front, again similar to the 2G Eclipse. With these twin side intercoolers, there is still the question of whether not they will include the intercooler sprayer(s).

- The car will have at least 250 HP, but the exact amount is still unknown.

- The JDM Recaros will NOT be included since they don't satisfy US safety standards. (I don't understand why they don't. Someone fill me in.) My source assured me that Recaros of some sort will be included, just not the JDM ones. Yipeee!!! :D

- The inclusion of Active Yaw Control and Active Center Differential is still undecided, but will most likely be included in the US model.

- About 5000 Evo VII's will be brought to the US

- Current price estimate going around is $31K. My guess would be that they will ultimately sell it for just below $30K.

- The car will be released late summer of 2002.

- They will also launch RalliArt USA at the same time the Evo VII is released to support not only the Evo VII but other Mitsubishi cars as well. The idea behind launching RalliArt USA is to allow Evo VII owners to convert their cars to JDM spec and beyond.

Why are you mentioning those 3 cars in the same sentence???? If you can afford an Skyline, get it in a heartbeat and forget about STI/EVO.
