View Full Version : Running out of GAS!

I posted a questions earlier concering how many gallon does a WRX really hold. Most people stated that it was 15.9 as stated in the manual and the light comes on with about 2.3 gallon left. I decided to test the theory tonight to an extent ... so I drove w/ the orange light on and lucky the first sign of running out of gas was on a small local road. I felt a few hard jerks, like someone not shifting right, but it went away. A mile or so later from a start I noticed the car jerked a lot when the rpm got above 25000 so I kept it around 25-30k. I went to go get gas because I thought it wasn't going to make it but I did get to a Chevron in time. I filled my girl up at 15.451 gallons so I guess the manual is correct. Did anyone else try to test this theory? Does the car have that jerking feel to let you know you're about to get screwed if you don't get gas soon? The needle on the dash for the gas was just under the middle line in the "E" so I guess that it can go below the regular markers but just not to the middle "E."

Yeah with the Chu modification Stage 5, you too can get 25000-30000 rphm on your WRX ... hehe. I meant 2500 & 3000, I wish my car did that too. I drove 31+ miles before it happened and also red lined it a few times in between ... hehe.

I read an article somewhere? Drive Magazine perhaps ?. It says that there is 1 gallon of gas in the tank is not reported (measured). It’s purpose is to trap sediment. Can anyone else confirm this?

The jerking you were feeling was because fuel to the engine was cutting out. My motorcycle did this when it was time to flip the fuel tank switch from primary to reserve...
prolly not good

I agree, it's not something I would do on a regular basis ... I just really wanted to know the limit on my WRX gas tank. So bascially from now on, I'll let it drop below "E" but then need to get gas before it reaches the bottom on the middle line of the "E."

yuppers...I drove 387.7 miles on 14.2 gallons of gas. Low fuel light came on and before getting to the gas station near my house, the needle was buried on EMPTY. I thought for sure the car would take at least 15 gallons. Nope, only 14.2. Thats insane! 90% of that last fillup was freeway driving. I figure on a road trip, Scooby can get 425 miles with ease before needing gas.

brunetmj more like .5 a gal.

Yeah you get about 1.5 when the light comes on, but there really is 2 left in the car. I've used the light MANY times

I never have a problem...

When I see I'm low on gas I just eat me some beans with the rice and I'm straight for the whole day :D

I've never had my gas light come on... I get scared when it gets to 1/8 of a tank.

Damn, you just made me jealous! I spent 2 months in san fran at the beginning of the year and fell in love with the Baha Fresh down the street from where I worked in Berkeley. We don't have anything like that here in NY...

Ok found the article in Drive magazine: I assume the WRX uses the same system as below.

Question: According to my owners manual, the tank on my 2000 Legacy GT sedan has a capacity of 16.9 gallons. However the gas gauge read almost empty ,but I only pumped 13.5 gallons Do I have to use the trip meter to be certain the tank is not empty?

Answer : For those vehicles equipped with a low fuel light, Subaru owners manual state that this light comes on when there are about 2.3 gallons left in the tank. Those are 2.3.usable gallons when the light remains on. Some fuel (about 1 gallon) is intentionally left unusable at the bottom of the fuel tank to help prevent contaminants (such as water or sand) received during fueling from being drawn into the injection system. Between the usable 2,3 gallons left and the unusable one gallon left, at least 3.3 gallons are left in the tank when the gauge reads “E” and the low fuel light is not on steadily

I was very used to driving with the empty light on. I commute a regular distance and know my mileage, so I can calculate how much farther I can go on the last 2 gallons. However, I once caused the car to sputter just blocks away from the gas station (with estimated 1 useable gallon of fuel left) when I made a sharp turn. I guess the sideways G's caused all the rest of the gas to go to one side of the tank and starve the engine.

So if you're running near empty, don't do any sharp turns too fast!

According to the subaru magazine I received that had iclub info on the last page, which also talked about the internals of boxer engines, the tank has exactly 1 gallon of fuel which CANNOT be used in any way, but used only to trap dusts/particles that were put into the tank. So basically, when the light comes on, there's at least 2-3 gallons of fuel left, from which, 1 gallon is reserved and cannot be used.

I also heard that if you drive until you run out of the gas completely and the engine dies, then it's really bad for the cats. Someone confirm this??
