View Full Version : Samco Intercooler hoses for WRX
mdntridr 10-16-2001, 10:13 PM I just finished installing my (bright red) Samco intercooler hoses. The installation process is very straightforward, and it's documented elsewhere so I won't bore you with it.
The most difficult part of the installatio was getting the old dump tube off the intake. It's in a tough spot under the intake manifold and is held on by one of those damn pinch clamps. Of course the latch was facing down away from me where it was all but inaccessible...but with some elbow grease and persuasion I got it off. Now's a good time to put one of the nice screw type hose clamps.
The other tricky part was getting all the new hoses to line up properly; the small hose near the throttle and the hose to the turbo all kinda need to go on at the same time. You end up pushing and wiggling and cursing and eventually it just pops on. Once that's in, tighten your clamps, bolt down the intercooler, hook up the hoses and let 'er rip.
I managed to do this one right the first time, no leaks or anything, so I quickly headed for a straight stretch of road and opened it up. There may possible be some more power there (I am bone stock, for now) and there is definitely some extra *whoooosh* there. Definitely a good mod for those of us who are planning on Stage 1 or 2 mods. Those of you with Unichips and full exhausts and big turbos will probably be impressed.
Time for a bowl of cereal.

redobs 10-18-2001, 09:45 PM Sweet review!! Who did you get them from? So, it didn't feel different with the butt dyno?
jwaters 10-22-2001, 10:02 PM My Samco's just came today (from Stratmosphere) and I noticed something anyone who installs these should note:
CHECK THE INSIDE OF THE HOSE FOR BURRS!!!
...refering to the turbo to I/C hose. Mine had a LOT of loose silicon at the joint making for a turbulent flow, and some of it was hanging on by so little it could EASILY get blown into the I/C and cause partial blockage or even make its way into the engine. I trimmed it with a hobbie knife and it is now smooth as butta.

Tex-WReX2 10-26-2001, 09:58 PM Did you guys replace clamps with a t-type clamp instead of a screw type?
djerickd 11-04-2001, 11:16 PM On the two ends that go onto the IC were they longer then stock?
Mine were and I just pressed them on further, I figured it doesn't harm anything as long as I have the clamps tight.
gossamer_monster 11-07-2001, 08:34 AM My hoses also had some crap in them. I just broke out the exacto and went to work. No biggy.
Performance wise I haven`t noticed a difference. :(
Oh well they look cool.

joemoidel 03-22-2002, 01:28 AM are there no gains from this mod? with what other mods would i see a gain in power from the samco ic hoses?
KapaFool 03-24-2002, 02:17 AM I have also installed the red Samco intercooler set. During the install I had some extra time to do some light porting on the TB. Haven't seen any big changes since the install but I am sure there will be once other mod are installed such as MBC/Unichip, TXS stages and/or Vishnu Stages. Better flow through. Not one mod can make a difference but a bunch of mods put together can add up. http://forums.off-topic.net/images/smilies/blue.gif
Rich10 04-24-2002, 06:58 AM RallyPerformance.com claims that the Samco hose is "Worth 5 to 8 horsepower..." Does this seem realistic?
NotoriousWRX 05-05-2002, 07:12 PM The Samco IC hoses are worth every penny. Just look at your stock Y pipe and compare it to the Samco. It is obvious that it flows better because it is bigger and smoother. The results have been documented on a dyno by several people, including some very reliable tuners. :)

The only figure that I have seen is from RallyPerformance.com. Could you tell me who else documented the dyno gains and how large the gains were?
Thanks,
Rich
Mach5WRX 06-10-2002, 01:00 AM Where can I get these at a good price?
QA Guy 06-10-2002, 12:54 PM Last I checked, Forge Motorsports in the UK was selling these for about $125 USD shipped (part number is TCS168).

relayer66 06-15-2002, 04:02 PM i think this is one of the best mods i've done on my car, and i have quite a few.
nhluhr 06-17-2002, 09:04 AM what they don't tell you is that one month after the pipes arrive from the UK, UPS will send you an import duty fee of about $10.

matthepcat 02-09-2007, 12:53 AM Does anyone know if anybody sells just the silicone y pipe? This is only the part that is worth the install for performance (not bling).

Prodrive does the Y-Pipe only as well as a few others.
WRXislander 02-02-2008, 12:08 AM CHECK THE INSIDE OF THE HOSE FOR BURRS!!!
+1 on this. I had to drummel the crap out my y-pipe to get the peeled up rubber off on the inside.
GreenLantern 04-05-2008, 11:50 PM is a tune required for this or the after-maf/turbo inlet hoses on an 07 WRX tr?
thanks
