Hi people, i was wondering if the general public buys the various extended warranties. Are they worth it? If so, which package do people usually get and what price? Do modders usually stick with the factory warranty? Scoobers

It depends on how warm and fuzzy you want to feel.
If you are sure you will own the car for more than 3 years/36,000 miles....then you may want the extended warranty.

Some advice i was given is: if they sit you down with the finance guy and he says would you like the extended warranty, it equals "this amount of money" offer him half of that. But you should not pay more than 2/3 of what he wants for it.

You can also get an aftermarket extended warranty too....and it is usually cheaper than the dealer.

I am sticking with the factory warranty as I hope to trade in my 2002 WRX for a new STi when it shows up! *wishful thinking*

never, EVER buy an extended warranty! on anything. ever.

extended warranties are a joke. they're just a ploy to remove more money from your bank account. the service (if any) you'll receive is always terrible, and most have enough loopholes and clauses that allow almost any forseeable problem you could face to fall outside of what's covered by the extended warranty.

why do places like circuit city and best buy push SO hard for you to buy that warranty on everything? it's where they make their money. their profit margins on everything are so razor thin, extended warranties are their bread and butter.

i'm guessing since the internet has made it pretty easy to find out what you actually SHOULD be paying for that new car, the same thing has happened at car dealers.

Depends on who the warranty is from and how long it is. On many cars unless the warranty goes past 75k miles it's hard to recoup your initial purchase price. However, if the car has known faults, all it takes is a few repairs to get on the up side.

I bought my Audi A4 1.8T quattro from the dealer specifically because it was a certified car. Dealer warranty until 75k miles. They've replaced the timing belt, lower control arms, coolant temp sensor, wheel bearing and a few other things. The warranty was definately worth it!

As far as Best Buy, yes, they make $$ on the warranties, however when I dropped my cordless phone on the floor and broke it, they gave me 100% of what I paid for it 2 years earlier because I spent $10 on an extended warranty...

I bought my car about six months ago. I am the second owner of the 97 Legacy GT. The car had 57,000 miles when I bought it. I went to my Subaru dealer and purchased one of there added security plans. I bought a 4year/48,000mile factory warranty for 1000 dollars. So my car is covered over 100,000 miles. I doubt I will keep it that long but I can transfer it to the next buyer for a fee of $40.
As far as service I have had great service. I had a problem with my brakes a couple of weeks ago. I took it in so they could fix it. They called the next day and told me to come pick it up. The bill was over $600 I paid $0.

Whether or not it is worth buying an extended warranty or not depends on several things. Most importantly being, will you modify the car thus rendering useless the warranty you are shelling out money?

Secondly, are you able to lay down the cash for any unseen problems that may happen? If you have the expendable income to cover these unfortunate expenses, then maybe it'd be wise to save a few bucks in the long run.

I bought a used Legacy last January and was being pressured by the dealer into getting an extended warranty (see dealer reviews-Bill Kolb Jr.). They were asking $1500 for a 4yr/48K mile warranty, (3rd party - not Subaru). No way too much!

Shop around, you may be able to find a 3rd party warranty for as little as $500 (4yr/48K).

I ended up talking the dealer down to $500 for the same warranty and am glad that I did. I've already saved $200 out of pocket expenses for replacement of a bad sensor. One more claim like that and I've justified buying the warranty. (With 3 years left I'm glad that I bought it.)

If you do buy a warranty, make sure you read ALL of the FINE PRINT. Know exactly what is covered and what is NOT. They vary widely.

I would never buy a third party warranty. I got mine from SOA. Mods do not void your warranty.

What's that? Mods DO NOT void your warranty? What type of warranty is this? If it's true, i'm gonna dump the extended warranty that I got with my WRX and get this one... Let me know!

Ok I put an exhaust on my car, will that void the electrical coverage? I take the engine apart and install some Cobb cams, will that void an engine warranty? Come on guy use some common sense. They have to prove that the mod is the cause of the problem. That means that if I go in to get my oil changed and they see I have an aftermarket muffler they can't yell , "Voided, Voided!". There are many laws out their about factory warrantys read up on them and learn what you CAN do.

I don't have some special warranty it is a SOA(Subaru of America) factory warranty. The difference between mine and yours is that I am informed.

They also reserve the right to NOT work on your car. Period. The warranty issues can be sorted later, but you are going to have to get a lawyer to get the process rolling. All this time, you are without your car! Of course that is worse case scenario, but it can happen!

I guess you better not mod your cars then.My service center is very mod friendly.

oh well than, i thought you had a MOD friendly warranty, like they would still cover parts that have been modified... That's what i was asking... hehe, no need to mock me!
