View Full Version : EGT or Oil Pressure ?

If you had to get 1 or the other, which would it be and why? The other gauge would be a boost gauge, making a total of 2 gauges. I've read some places saying EGT is mandatory, and others saying Oil Pressure is mandatory, but I'm a bit confused. This is for a Stage 2 WRX.

Why not get a ATi gauge pod and have all three? This would solve your problem. If it were me though.....I would go with Oil Pressure

I would get EGT to keep track if your running lean or not, running lean and tearing up your motor will lead to low oil pressure, so imo catch it before it gets to that point.

+1 on the EGT.

I think most will say EGT. Of course as has been said all three are more ideal.

Thanks for the replies, EGT it is :)
I don't feel like tearing out my clock and I'm not a fan of the A-pillar either. I like the autometer cluster because of that stealthy look, which is a goal for my car to begin with.

i say egt as well, i for one love my clock mouted ati pod, no need to look down under full throttle, just glance over where you clock would normally be for a quick read, much safer imo

Egts? No one knows for sure what the're supposed to be. There's this fuzzy like range which is taboo. But oil pressure, imho, tells more. besides by the time the dummy lite goes off on the dash, you're too late. The oil pressure will give you way more earlier warning.

1600deg =bad there ya go, and you have warning, you can watch the gauge climb, isn't like it goes from 800deg to 1600 in the blink of a eye

Maybe I'll just go with a triple clock pod then and get all 3. I wonder if I can stick the clock anywhere that won't make the car ugly. The coin tray comes to mind but will the wires reach?

Yes we do know the range. And it is likely that you would see high egt's before you see lower oil pressure. If you do something about it, your engine will live longer.

I plan on using the clock on the radio I installed ;)

What's the range you guys are talking about. Someone said 1600 but 1600 in what gear, what load, what octane which pistons etc. Just saying a number is dam near pointless
Low oil pressure is low pressure no mater what. that's why i think oil pressure is more useful than egt's:D

Running lean will make egts run hot.. but so will alot of other things... i dont like how people think EGT gauges are needed to see if your running lean... hot yes.. but get a wideband if you want to see A/F ... you can be 10:1 with sky rocketing egt's... Dont mean to sound rude if i do.. I would save the money and get both.. Also a wideband if you can afford it... I think those 3 gauges are key to any turbo car.

another option to consider -
i have the autometer cluster bezel (dual) piece.
i mounted a third gauge in a single 'cup' type mount (clamping ring, actually)
on the upper edge of the piece that runs along the bottom, in the center.
(sorry, i can't think of how to concisely describe that)
this puts the gauge over the center of my tach (STi).
i can still read the tach fine, and the warning messages are still visible thru
the small gap beneath the gauge.
sorry i can't show you a picture, i won't be back to my home pc for a few days.

Get a wideband. It reads faster than the EGT and it will read A/F ratios. The EGT is very dependent of timming and suchs

I just installed the Defi amber Imperial gauge set with boost, oil pressure, and EGT with the pod and controller. You get the right gauges with the same lighting and look as your other gauges, because they're made by the same company. It looks much better than a clock! Just look at your watch or cell phone for the time. You'll never miss the clock.

How much did that cost? I'm looking at MadDads right now because there is a special at 359.99 for 3 gauges.

you will have to search around, but Defi gauges run between about $250-$299 each. depending on gauge
control unit $100+
defi pod ~$170+

you will go thru $900 or $1000 in no time.
which is why i am running MadDad V1.
if you get the V2, make sure you wire them to a proper power source
(search for thread on 'inaccurate reading' - caused by bad power)
