View Full Version : Problem with Bugeye jdm headlights

hey i need some help. i have the jdm non hid headlights for my bugeye. i made my own wiring harness to make my headlights plug and play instead of splicing into the factory headlight lead. i followed the steps on scooby mods and with the all the stock bulbs in everything worked fine. the headlights, turn signals, high beams and city lights.

the stock lights were not bright enough so i bought a set of piaa H1 bulbs to replace them. i installed the piaas and now the drivers side is lighting up brighter than the passenger side. and both high beams come on vey faintly. and when i switch to highbeams the passenger side does not come on at all. i thought maybe it was just the something wrong with the grounding on the passenger side so i decided to unplug it and plug it into the drivers side. the lights all light up correctly now. but as soon as something gets plugged into the passenger side it gets all haywire again.

any suggestions? are the piaa bulbs drawing too much current? do i need to change the fuses?

i have no clue. thanks for any help

fuses would disconnect the circuit, so it's more than likely not a fuse issue.

the bulbs might be drawing more current, but that doesn't explain why the harness responds differently to the driver's side than the passenger side, unless they've caused damage to the wires.

does the harness have relays and direct to power connections, or is it simply a conversion harness so that the 9007 goes to seperate hi and low bulbs? (H1 and 9005 connectors with a diode between them)

more information on the harness and what exactly you're plugging into the driver's side(the headlamp into the driver's side harness, or the headlamp and harness into the driver's side 9007 female connector) would be helpful... it sounds like one of your harnesses is malfunctioning... are you using a diode? the dim high beam glow would suggest the diode is not functioning properly, or some wires may have been crossed or melted somewhere.

what wattage are the piaa bulbs? stock wiring cannot reliably handle more than 65 watts.

How many watts are those piaa bulbs? I have a hunch they draw so much current that it causes a voltage drop in the wires... this then changes the reference voltage from 12V to something like 11, or 10. Depending on how you've wired it, the difference of 1 or 2V can then appear across the high-beam bulb which causes it to light up dimly.

You'll have to draw out the wiring you've done so we can tell for sure how to solve the problem.

the bulbs are 12v 55w --> 110w

when i put the stockers back in, i dont have this problem so i assume its the bulbs.

i didnt use any relays, just plug and play with the stocker

Sounds to me like one side isn't grounding well and is trying to ground through high beams.

if the high beams are 110 watt that could be an issue with voltage drop through the wires, no?

one would think.
