View Full Version : wrx mpg- what's everyone averaging?
on a full tank, per gallon, etc.
i drive kinda fast, sooo...i'm getting about 280-290 on a fulltank of 93 octane BP unleaded.
i don't know what that translates to per gallon ('cause i forget how big our gas tanks...okay, so i don't read the manual much)
anyway, what is everyone averaging...JUST CURIOUS.
thanks,
db97
illmatic 10-22-2001, 09:30 PM My best is 348 before the fuel light came on. That is with about
%85 high way driving at 80-95mph cruising speed.
rak328 10-23-2001, 05:02 PM I only get about 230-250 miles per tank of gas. Most of my driving is in the city so that might have something top do with it. But I did get 330 miles per tank going 80 mph on the freeway on a trip a few months ago.
-Ryan
GRWRX 10-24-2001, 08:59 AM 22 mpg. A 50 / 50 mix highway / city.
WRX4me 10-24-2001, 10:15 AM db97, what I've been doing is this...next time you fill up, note how many gallons you just pumped in. Take your mileage / what you just pumped, and you should get an average of mpg.
I've been getting around 21-22
Coati 10-24-2001, 11:56 AM Last tank was about 22mpg in mixed (but mostly freeway) driving. Right now I only have about 2,000 miles on the car, so we'll see if it changes.
Martin Ritchie 10-24-2001, 02:28 PM I'm lucky to get 20 mpg in city driving. I can get 22-23 when I am doing open highway. I use 93 octane.
23-25mpg on average with a little hgw and city driving. Never gotten more than 310mi before the light came on.
-anders
bobafett 10-25-2001, 06:52 PM with 91 octane and 5w-30 oil I get about 27.
with 91 octane and 10w-30 oil I get about 24. :(
Lots of highway driving (38 miles to/from work).
Willman67 10-25-2001, 06:53 PM about 18.4 mpg towing a 1700 lb trailer at 65-70 mph
about 21 mpg around town....mostly taking it easy
about 14 when i'm auto crossing
Wm
Flesher 10-30-2001, 02:03 AM I get between 20 and 25 mpg. I was getting an upper end of ~27, but then I moved out here to the land of shady 91 octane "premium."
Figures. Once I get a car where it actually matters what you put in, I move away from easily-obtained 94 octane...
D'oh!
WRXcellent 11-01-2001, 11:53 AM I use 94 all the time because its cheap here in jersey.. well i think its not so bad at least.. i average around 23-24mpg .. go to about 285-300 miles on every tank... my best was 28mpg but i have also had a few more highway runs of 27.. i think its pretty good mileage, i'm not complaining.
Bad Dogg 11-04-2001, 02:05 AM Mainly short hops in town tho. Lucky to go 220-230 before light. 20 mpg on hiway, but only 2K miles on car
RS-LOVER 11-04-2001, 02:25 AM I know the question is for WRX's but I'm confused.
First of all, how do the WRX's get better MPG then the RS's? I only average 20mpg. I have had my RS since April 00 and I have never broke 23 mpg...
I admit that I drive hard, but I dont get it. :(
Oh yeah and both our gas tanks hold 15.9 gallons.
Coati 11-05-2001, 07:56 PM Whaddayaknow!?
I just got a hair over 25 mpg on a mostly (85%) freeway tank. Perhaps the engine's breaking in ... or perhaps I'm learning how not to put my foot in it;)
LttLDGN 11-06-2001, 07:16 PM 6k miles... 24-25 mpg with a little "spirited" driving..:D

Your engine has a larger displacement, so it uses more gas most of the time. The WRX sucks more gas down while it's under boost, but that's only a small percentage of the time that the engine is running. The rest of the time it's just a puny 2 liter, 4 cylinder.
That's the beauty of the turbo: two personalities in one engine. :)
-Dave
Also the WRX has a better gear ratio for crusing - it turns less revs at the same speed when in 5th gear. That equals better mileage.
That said, I sure don't get better mileage than I did in my 98 GT - but I sure go faster!
Benno 11-08-2001, 01:44 PM my first tank I got 15.83 mpg, second tank (332.5 miles to 508 miles) I got 19.87 mpg. Who knows what it will be when I stop driving like a granny! 715 miles today, hopefully I'll go over 1000 this weekend.
mark5211 11-08-2001, 08:01 PM At 5,000 miles, I am averaging 23 with mixed driving and a few sprints here and there (to keep the carbon out of the cylinders....ha!). Best mpg was 24...worst 21.....oil was changed at 3,000 miles and dealer put dinosaur 10w-30 in.....ouch!...thinking of switching to full synth 5w-30....have heard mpg may increase 2 mpg...any thoughts?
whitewag 11-09-2001, 03:30 AM I'm averaging around 275 till the light comes on. My best is around 350 and worst is 210 :)
Martin Ritchie 11-10-2001, 09:51 AM Took a trip to Columbus this week. Got 325 miles before light went on. Figure I could easily get 350 out of this tank but have never run out of gas and don't plan on starting now.
RS-LOVER 11-11-2001, 03:39 AM Well I just took a trip from Sedona AZ to Boca Raton Fl. About 2,500m and I averaged 25-27mpg the whole way. :) I cruised at about 3500-4000rpm most of the time. I was suprized the difference the Ganzflow CAI and K&N filter made on the long trip. I guess that my in town driving habits kill my mpg.:D
Romanikque 11-11-2001, 05:58 PM This is when a CAI is a nice thing. I am getting about 26-28 mpg highway and roughly 23-24 city mpg.
-Romanikque
I started tracking my MPG in a notebook that I update every time I fill up. My worst mileage - 17.2 MPG averaged over 11 gallons (with an autocross). My best -- 29.1 MPG averaged over 10.8 gallons (all 75-85 MPH freeway cruising).
I have NO complaints about mileage in my WRX. I don't drive like a granny, either.
-Joe
KoMpreSsor 11-14-2001, 08:38 PM I have about 2,000 miles, so far. These results are a mixture of 70% city driving and 30% highway driving.
For the last few tanks:
22.0
22.3
22.1
22.0
23.1
It's very consistently near the 22.0 mark.
I can't wait to change over to Mobil1 in the engine and the tranny.
Have not tried a 100% interstate trip yet.
Coati 11-15-2001, 11:49 AM Tank refilled last night was 24mpg.
Combined driving with another passenger in the car for at least 30% of the tank.
This was the first full tank after the car's first dealer oil change at 3,100 miles.
wrx02blk 11-15-2001, 12:06 PM I am consistantly getting 27 -28 MPG interstate travel. I have a 120 mile round-trip commute to work and home at a speed of about 75 MPH. The problem is the town driving. That is more like 22-24 MPG. Can't seem to stay off the turbo!
Alpine 11-16-2001, 01:38 AM I get anywhere between 21 and 25 on mostly highway driving... the couple of times I've taken it thru the mountains to the beach (more spirited :) ) I got 32+ mpg. I know what the lesson to learn from that is :). Chevron 92+techron seems to be the best for mileage, power and engine smoothness. I'm just about to go in for my first oil change.
satrya 11-16-2001, 02:42 AM 23 mpg, mostly city, on 91 octane. My 1995 Impreza L (1.8l NA) did 24.5mpg on 87 octane. I was pleasantly surprised the wrx didn't do 19mpg or less...
:)
Coati 11-19-2001, 06:37 PM the couple of times I've taken it thru the mountains to the beach (more spirited ) I got 32+ mpg
Mountains-->beach=downhill, yes? No wonder you get 32mpg;)
WRXTeamDFL 11-20-2001, 02:20 PM I'm usually right around 25 mpg... mostly highway driving.
scoobybrande 11-21-2001, 01:44 AM Right around 22 MPG using 93 (and one tank of 100:D ) very gentle driving as I am still breaking it in, but lots of idling for warm up/cool down.
:o Is this guy Neal or Bob?
Coati 12-06-2001, 05:56 PM four more tanks for averaging:
277.7 mi, 12.843 gal = 21.62mpg
289.8 mi, 12.573 gal = 23.05mpg
241.1 mi, 11.430 gal = 21.09mpg
295.1 mi, 13.713 gal = 21.51mpg
jaxscuby 12-07-2001, 12:31 PM with 10k on the car have been average around 25 mpg.
40% city and 60% weekend trips

Cruised at 3500-4000??? At 4000RPM, that's damn near 100MPH. Right on!!
Evaider 12-11-2001, 12:57 AM I am probably getting around 10 MPG. I drive 60 miles a day to work on a small 2 lane highway, I am constantly going into boost to pass these ****ers going about 40mph! =(
Coati 12-11-2001, 01:47 PM One more:
270.7 miles for 13.567 gal = 19.95mpg
That's with auto-x runs and a whole lot of idling.
narenji 12-12-2001, 04:34 PM I only have about 1700 mi, and i've gotten about 23-24 mpg to a best of around 26 mpg. This is mostly city driving, but still hitting 50 mph often thru the city. The 26 mpg was mostly highway. I hope to get my first free oil change soon maybe 2000 mi.

The WRX has a 2.0L engine...If you are sitting on the highway at 65 mph with cruise control on, the Turbo hardly spins at all. The RS has a 2.5L engine and will, thus, get worse gas mileage than an off-boost WRX.
I normally get 23-24 mpg in "day to day" driving. Of course, I have to drive 10 miles on a highway to get anywhere at all.
My best was 28 mpg on a run from Ithaca, NY to Burlington, VT (330 miles). I had my bunny wabbit with me and didn't want to shake him up too much. He already hates to ride in a car.
As for the low fuel light...I STILL haven't seen it. I put 13.5 gallons in today. Only 15 of the 15.9 gallons is usable, so when does the thing come on? I'd like more than 23 miles warning to get gas. My Neon's light came on with 4.5 gallons left in a 12.5 gallon tank. I drove from Cortland, NY to Baldwinsville, NY (50 miles) with my needle resting on the peg in that car. Not complaining...I should pay more attention to my gas needs anyhow. Just an observation. Wow...I'm really rambling on and on. Sorry about that.
DubbleURX 12-13-2001, 04:26 AM I fill up about 14 gallons each time at the pump and well normally its about 240 to the tank. Have got 190 with alot of spirited driving and the best was like 280.
Mostly all city driving and mostly always 6500rpm in first..
Addicted to boost.!!
Danny
rankink 12-17-2001, 07:28 PM I have been getting about 22 mpg in city driving. This is with 93 octane and driving it aggressively about 50% of the time.
About to go on a 500 mile highway trip, so I will find out what my highway mileage is soon.
Kolin
Just got 23 mpg on a trip to Morgantown, WVA from near Gettysburg. Pushing 85 to 90 in WVa ... very hilly. Little slower on the way back, 70 to 75 & got >25 mpg, not too bad. Is it possible for these cars to go closer to the speed limit?
karazyman 12-18-2001, 03:59 PM My first tank (filled up by the dealer), the light went on around 277 miles. My 2nd fill up was at 280 miles and the light didn't come on yet. I do mostly city driving and some highway.
orbit03 12-18-2001, 04:15 PM I do a lot of city driving and I am usually in the 19-23mpg range depending on how heavy my foot is. On highway trips, with the stock tires, I was running 27-30mpg. On the studded Hakkas (I run them a little lower pressure), the highway mileage has dropped to 25-28mpg.
SkirtBoy 12-30-2001, 09:32 PM 22-24 Mixed, with an MRT turbo back exhaust and a APS CAI.
daytontp 12-30-2001, 11:39 PM I have not previously had a car with any of the items listed below. I find myself having a little fun with the car. I drive 40% highway and 60% city. Also, most of the highway I drive to and from work is at or below 50 MPH, your typical highway work traffic. I have put 1800 miles on my car in a month and a half. Averaging 19.8 MPG with Mobil1 10W30 Synthetic and a drop-in K&N air filter. I have not driven on a trip anywhere so I am not sure what my true highway MPG is.
Items new to me:
Turbo 'n' Intercooler
AWD
ABS brakes
Kind of power this car has
Compared to my previous car, a 2000 Civic EX coupe, this car kicks @$$, major one at that.
TheWRX 01-01-2002, 07:33 PM Just did a longer road trip (3500 miles). I'll have to see if I managed to keep all the receipts to calculate precise numbers, but it seems like I got around 25-26 mpg in almost exclusively highway driving, often on cruise control between 70-85 mph. I typically filled up at a little more than 300 miles, and the warning light wasn't on yet.
In my typical driving, which is mostly in the city, I get less than 20 mpg.
Per tank (91) is about 304 miles...with my foot in it all the time take away about 76 miles.
andy cripe 01-11-2002, 04:16 PM I'll admit I'm a little anal about keeping track of milage--but I've found that a simple spreadsheet format is easy and informative. For computer buffs, you can easily graph fuel costs, mpg, etc. I'm pasting some data from my excel file for those who would like to check out the template. note that I use formulas to compute total fuel costs, mpg, and miles driven. Just be sure to note down your milage when you fuel, and keep a reciept for the other statistics.

FYI, before I started following the I-club board, I lurked extensively on the subaru newsgroup. Guys there reported almost that their gas mileage improved dramatically after about 25k miles. Apparently our little boxer engines take a while to settle in. So we can probably expect to see better fuel consumption by next year. I only have 4300 mi on right now.
Ken Levin 01-11-2002, 10:51 PM 20 - 22 mpg with chip
j-wrx 01-12-2002, 05:23 PM The mpg seems to be pretty variable, dependent on both the brand of gas put in as well as how heavy my foot is on the gas. Usually my foot is feeling pretty heavy, so I am getting about 250 to 320 (best so far) on a tank. I keep trying to experiment and drive conservative to see what my max mpg is, but I just can't seem to keep from pushing that sweet metal pedal to the floor!
byrdman 01-20-2002, 10:43 AM I will get about 22-27mpg in town. It seems the faster the speedlimit is on the highway the better the milage gets. From Carney Nebraska to Omaha the speed limit is 80mph. I got nearly 32mpg
j-wrx 01-20-2002, 04:17 PM Interesting you should mention that...High speeds on the freeway also seem to give me the best mpg. On my car's first road trip after breaking 1000 miles, I drove it pretty hard, and for a long period of time. I even had the silver bullet up to 120mph (handled as if I were going 90).
When I stopped for gas, I had 320 miles on the trip meter and fuel gauge was not even on empty! Maybe the cars like being driven at higher rpm's (3000-5000) and get optimum gas mileage during freeway driving in that rpm range?
But city driving at higher rpm's seem to suck down fuel as if it were tasty martini!
wasabi 01-21-2002, 01:40 PM I have 6500 miles on my automatic WRX. I get 20-22 mpg in mostly city driving and 27-28 mpg driving on the highway at 70-75mph.
MJU1983 01-21-2002, 02:21 PM I all depends how i feel like driving... sometimes upwards of 100miles per 1/4 tank... but mostly ~50-60 miles now..
-Mike
Mike@roadfly.com
its fun to drive fast...
chadwich 01-21-2002, 08:58 PM On my one full tank of freeway driving at 80-90 mph I got 27.8 mpg. The last few tanks sinse I switched to Mobil 1 I've gotten just under 17 mpg. I do almost stop and go driving (in the city) and I get on it all the time.
The car just rolled 2000 miles so it may still be adjusting. I also added a CAI last week, so we'll see how that helps. I always let the car idle to warm up and idle to cool down too. May have something to do with the 17 mpg.
Question for all:
How many miles have you gone after Fuel light comes on?
Grind..20mpg avg.
IF: I am going downhill, the wind is blowing from behind me
and I have it in the "N"gear.

Benno 01-25-2002, 09:51 AM Here's the last 3 months or so from my palm pilot. No mods yet - should be interesting to see if there's any change due to intake or exhaust. This is a lot better than the 12.5mpg average I had in my '93 RX-7!

ldivinag 02-06-2002, 05:49 AM benno,
i'm sure, you dont have to carry to the Nth decimal point...
anyway, got mine last month. broke it in and drove to vegas. entire trip was like1400 miles. got around 25-28 for the trip.
now i'm home and learning to drive a stick, and my daily commute is 8 miles each way: 4 miles on freeway, last mile climbing a hill with 15% grade, i'm dropped to 20. last fill up, 2 days ago, registered around 19.5.
and yes, i keep ALL records for mileage. gives me a chance to keep a database of stuff, like repairs, oil changes, etc.
btw, previous daily driver was a toyota 4runner with a v6 and auto tranny. nearly 4 years of data. i'm lucky if i get 17-18 on the highway...

i guess this is something for another topic, but i love the gear ratios of the wrx. you don't even need to use 5th gear if you don't want to, (unless you are going really fast or long distances) unlike my old chevy truck, where i was in 5th gear by 55 mph! i don't know if a lot of modern cars are like the wrx, but going 85mph in 3rd gear without straining the engine is pretty amazing to me.
sajohnson 02-09-2002, 03:42 AM Stock except silencer mod and K&N filter. 5W30 Mobil1.
Fuel light usually on at 270 miles. About 20 mpg.
This is with mixed driving--mostly high-speed Interstate, some rural, some suburban.
I actually expected a little better. A guy I run with who has about the same commute (and similar driving style) gets about 22 mpg with a new 2002 Firebird WS6 that's been modified.
Gumpy 02-24-2002, 03:39 PM I have been getting anywhere between 19 and 23 mpg with 75% highway driving and 25% city driving. I probably could do better, but its hard to stay light on the throttle when the boost kicks in at 3000rpm.
krave 02-25-2002, 12:09 PM 20mpg in city, maybe 24 highway
TitanWRX 03-13-2002, 01:53 PM i get no more that 260 max before the light comes on. a lot of freeway driving. i hate the mpg that the wrx gets. it sucks. i used to drive a 00 celica gts. i used to get over 350 miles with that car. costs less to fill up the tank too.
Wheeler Bement 04-04-2002, 08:49 PM i shift at 2250 for the first 200 miles (half tank) and then open it up till the light comes on....24mpg
my interstate driving varies between 60 to 90, typically 75; I get 26 mpg on long trips
iceNine 04-04-2002, 09:40 PM I usually get 19 mpg in mixed driving with a heavy foot. MBC set to about 14.5 psi. Auto trans. About 5600 total miles on the car. I have records from the very begining and have never gotten above 23 mpg. Mmm ...maybe I should drive without getting on the boost so much. (Oh yes, thats likely to happen:lol: )

91 octane California crap gas
20% - 30% highway driving
appx. 240 - 270 miles to the tank
How big is the tank anyway?
cobra117 04-06-2002, 12:24 PM I read in the owners manual that this activates when there is approximately 2.3 gal left in the tank.
So, dividing by the full tank volume when the low gas light comes on will give you lower than actual MPG. Just a thought for anyone figuring out MPG by that method.
I was usually getting about 300 miles per tank (Before low gas light) out of mine before going to synthetic everything. 22mpg. This is mixed City/Highway mostly kept below 4k, though I don't really drive like a granny. Boost is kindof addictive =)
Since changing gear oils to Redline, Got 325 out of one tank with 4 people in the car for most of the trip. Also mixed City/Highway.
24mpg.
Just a question, does running a stock WRX down to the low gas light cause any problems? I've heard a little about fuel slosh, but searches turn up nothing really. Any help?
sajohnson 04-07-2002, 01:43 AM Personal experience:
When the low fuel light comes on, don't waste time getting gas. On my way to work one day the fuel light came on about 20 miles before my exit. The ramp is a nice sweeper--left and then right. As I was going thru the left-hand turn the car just DIED! It was as if I'd hit the rev limiter. I barely made it to the first gas station about a mile away.
Question: Has your mileage been consistently better since switching to Redline gear oil, or was it just that one trip? You're talking about almost a 10% increase which seems a bit high. Just wondering.
cobra117 04-07-2002, 02:42 PM It's been 3 tanks that way, about an extra 20 - 30 miles over what I usually get. It's pretty cool. Changed out Rear Differential to Redline 75W90 and Gear oil to superlight shockproof.
So is that fuel slosh? Low gas, rapid turns, fuel pump loses suction and car dies?
SCC mentions their rotary dying because of fuel slosh, so I figured it was more serious. Thanks for the reply though.
sajohnson 04-08-2002, 01:04 AM Cobra 117:
That's a great improvement in mileage. Makes me wonder--since it is obviously running more efficiently, if it is also a little faster.
How did you decide on Redline 75W90 for the rear diff. and superlight shockproof for the transaxle?
I know about Redline, but what is 'superlight shockproof'?
Finally, what is a good source?
bobafett 04-08-2002, 05:44 PM Just thought I'd post my experience with WRX mpg...
Usually get about 24 when I'm on the gas a bit. Do mostly highway driving, though. Last couple tanks I've been cruisin more and got just over 26 (less than 27 though).
370 when the light came on. One of these days I'm going to try to hit 400 before the light! But then, you really have to drive it like it's a geo metro :P
moojamboo 04-09-2002, 11:42 AM i have to admit, I am getting less miles per gallon than I would have liked, but in the same vein, I am driving with a little more, uhh, gusto, than before. I always fill up when i have a quarter tank left, and i have usually 200 miles on the tank by then.
moojamboo
DF WRX 04-10-2002, 11:57 AM I have 1200 miles on mine, and am right around 25 mpg. That includes me being nice during the break in period.
cobra117 04-10-2002, 12:59 PM Butt dyno says no faster, but I live in a town that may as well just turn itself into a giant retirement home, I don't get to go fast often =( Maybe that's why my mileage is so high for mostly city driving...
A lot of people on this board reccomended those oils, plus...

Fun fact: The worst gas tank did NOT occur because of an autocross. I think it was just cheap gas. Actually, my last couple of autcross events have yielded better-than-average MPG.

Hehehe, thats what I get too. Its just so hard to keep the right foot from planting it down when I get behind the wheel. Conversely, my wife when she drives it she gets about 27-30 mpg. I tend to have her take it when she goes long distances, since I trust the Suby with her life more than her Durango.
If I take it easy I can get closer to 20 mpg, but hell who cares! VRoooom.

I keep a lot of data, too so here are all my numbers for the same categories, including estimates for the gas in the car when I bought it and a couple of blurred receipts:

Guess that goes to show that it depends how you drive your car.
This is my first 100 fuelings, in two weeks short of a year.
the last couple tanks I only measured about 15 mpg. I do mostly city driving and I probably have a heavy foot by most standards. But I still wish I had better effeciency, something like 25 mpg, like some of you are getting would be nice.

happy2bhardcore 10-01-2002, 11:10 PM Hey, since everyone's on the topic I was actually having a little problem with my RS. It's got 10000 clicks on it and i'm recordin (this is in Canada so the measurements are different) about 30 litres for every hundred kilometre. That means I get about 200 kilometres on a tanik of gas. My logic may be flawed, but something is definetly wrong? Any ideas on what the problem might be guys? I thought it could be the floater in the tank being inaccurate but it just doesn't seem right.....
sajohnson 10-02-2002, 01:02 AM IIRC 100 km = 66 miles. If that is true, you are saying you are getting about 130 miles/tank??
Or another way: 66 miles/30 litres =
66 miles/7.9 gallons or 8.4 mpg (!)
I would say something is amiss.
happy2bhardcore 10-02-2002, 05:58 PM Any ideas as to what the problems could possibly be??
kendo 10-04-2002, 06:33 AM Sorry that my car is not WRX. But I figure it may be useful to compare with the NA 2.5L.
I have a 00 Forester AT around 74K.
I will say I used to get 24mpg.
I drive around 360-380miles before my engine REALLY run out of gas(a few times it happened.
The yellow-orange gas light turn on around 290mile and off again later. Not until 300-310 miles that it will be consistently ON.
All stock(air filter changed). Even the spark plugs are original. :P
Here is the reason I would like to reply to this post.
First, the high speed thing. I think subaru intake air flow design is VERY bad. WRX is a bit better but... More room for improvement.
I think maybe during higher speed, the WRX intake on top of the grill is more effective due to engine compartment temperature.
But the DIY mod to cut the front weather trim will help even more.
"Just a piece of plastic"!!!
Second, I really have to complain about the stock spark plug(Champion). Not just the plug but I am doubtful on the manufacturing gap consistence also. Why do I say that? Well, when I change my plug around 74K(my bad), the 4 plugs gaps are like this: .62, .52, .56, .66.
It made me think if the original manufactured install is not right.
Can someone with a WRX and willing to change their plugs to confirm their plugs gapping? I do highly recommend anyone with the original stock plug change to NGK VPower plugs. I do think it make a difference. The trouble is after the change, I have reset my ECU due to taking out the battery. Plus some CAI and Redline oil changes. So I don't have my current stable data yet until maybe next month.
Sorry for the mumbles to the WRX fans.
-Kendo.
kendo 10-04-2002, 06:45 AM Forget to mention.
For the numbers I provided.
I use 87 Octane gas, Shell or Chevron only. 10w30 regular oil.
I drive 30/70 city and highway. On highway is between 65-90mph with rpm bwtween 3K - 4K range usually.

I drove from Cincinnati, to Burlington VT at the begining of march, and from Cincy, to Syracuse NY I averaged ove 44 MPG:eek:
This could be due to a lot of things...
A. I changed my tranny and rear diff. (Royal Purple)
B. I changed my oil (Mobil 1)
C. I changed my spark plugs (NGK Iridium)
D. I used my cruise control, and drafted other cars using theirs (75 MPH)

Have you checked your math? I just drove 2K miles with fresh plugs, oil, diff, air filter and couldn't break 28 mpg on a trip to Montana. Were you chained to a car in front of you, or do you have a sail on your car? ;)

it's going to vary. i average about 24-24.5mpg with a good mix of city and highway running Stage 2 w/ an OTS map. Thats with a decent amount of WOT while merging onto highways. I've seen as high as 31mpg, but that was really pussyfooting the car around.

Has mileage improved in the later WRX's? I have a stock '02 also, and overall, I've averaged around 21 mpg its whole life (it has 167k miles now). I'm getting more 22mpg tankfuls now, but I think my driving has mellowed out as I've gotten older. For the first 5 years or so, the car was always between 20 and 20.5 mpg, so I really had to fuel up at the 275 mile range for safety.

Hmmm...I dunno about the using more gas part.
I have an 02 RS and consistently get 25-26mpg city and 35 hwy. Bone stock, just well maintained.
Know its not WRX mileage but saw the post and thought I would throw this in.
03silverblt 06-22-2008, 03:58 PM Today I have 400+ miles and the yellow light just came on.
I'll fill it up after work and find out how many miles per gallon i got.
This was about 90% highway drive. Couple pulls here in there. I had the A/C on the whole time. should be about 29ish mpg.
I was able to go from San diego to Laughlin in half a tank. I'll take a picture, I was surprised I was able to go this far with a/c on all the time. I usually get 380 without ac. when the yellow turns on. 60% hwy.
I filled up in Bull head, AZ went to vegas, to hoover dam back to laughlin and around town cruising all in 1/2 tank as well. I thought its awsome. This trip I only averaged. 28mpg :(.
If I play around too much and speed everywhere I only avg. 24mpg.
BillJC 06-22-2008, 04:44 PM I just got back for a work to Bakersfield from the Bay Area and I was averaging a bit above 27 mpg. That's with the AC on and cruise set a t 70 in about 100 degree heat. That's probably the best mileage I've gotten so far. The car has 148K miles on it.

elmaco510 06-27-2008, 12:04 AM off timing will definitely kill gas mileage, as teh car is not running as efficiently as it should be.
check this out....... my 2003 wrx is only giving me close to 200 miles to the tank and it feels like a slug when i driving local and it seems its always on boost....... do u think i should check my timing?????? it feels like its retarded
FearTheTurtle 06-28-2008, 02:41 PM My 06 WRX Wagon with 40k miles on its consitently gets me 23-24 mpg. My driving is 70% highway (70mph+) and 30% stop and go city traffic.
At $4/gallon sometimes I wish I got better mpg but really hard to beat the combination of decent gas mileage, smiles per mile and praticality as my WRX Wagon!!!

dowroa 06-28-2008, 11:10 PM Cars owned Experiences:
2003 WRX: 250-275 per 10 gallons
2005 STi: 180-220 per 10 gallons
1998 RS: 230-250 per 10 gallons
2007 FXTSC: 280-290 per 10 gallons
2006 WRX: 270-300 per 10 gallons
Ownership order. Also, I think that spans a time of 6 years, so driving purpose and driving style has changed. Also, all of those are attached to a variety of different HP, tranny, and rear diff combos.
I will have to state that we have had "loaner" NA25s, and they got ~27mpg for us with mixed driving. I am relatively impressed, and as long as you drive sanely, you get good mileage.
amalgrover 06-29-2008, 02:05 PM I just took a trip in my WRX wagon. 2002 with 75000 miles on it, and I thought I would just see how good of gas mileage I could get. It took me almost an hour and a half longer, but keep the cruise control set at a steady 60 mph (except for 2 nice runs up to 140 mph with an SRT-4 and an Integra GSR) for the whole tank full to gas light on, I averaged around 35 mpg, and no, none of that mileage was drafting trucks. Trust me...they were definitely pissed to get stuck behind someone going 60 on the interstate. I hit 475 on that tank and it took 13.5 gallons. I have perrin drop in filter, turboXS RFL-Ti TBE, NGK Iridium stock heat range gapped to .29, and Bridgestone Potenza RE960AS 225-50WR16's. Supposedly the wider tires actually hurt my gas mileage, but I haven't really seen any difference. I usually get around 23-25 mpg avg everyday driving and I definitely don't take it easy. I am running about 16.5 psi boost, and there are a hell of a lot of mustangs here that think they can beat anything that pulls up next to them, so...It gets driven pretty hard. I wanted to see if I could break 500 miles on a tank, but driving 50mph for 9 hours is just a little too painful. Maybe next time when someone else wants to drive.
Stock 08 wrx 5MT, still in break in period @ 650 miles
City: 25 MPG Average AC off
Highway: 31 MPG @ 65-70mph with the AC on
Thats DAMN impressive and well beyond my expectations for this car.
I fully expect those numbers to drop once break in is through and I can open it up a little more
ultimatkilla 07-07-2008, 10:54 PM Well.. I think it was a wise decision to take off the BOV without a tune.. I am now getting 25 mpg.. I will be getting a tune in the next week or so.. Will have a intake and some other gadgets on after that.. Will update then..
Dutchman1101 07-10-2008, 04:36 PM I just got 22 mpg on my last tank with some spirited driving thrown in there as well.
The car only has 2,200 miles on it so I imagine it will get better with time.
Deuce812 07-10-2008, 04:45 PM I just drove 359 miles this weekend on 11.2 gallons on an 04 WRX (uppipe only so far) ~32.05MPG
I see mine seems to be at the higher end of this spectrum, granted that was all highway on 93 octane at ~70MPH.
siksit 07-11-2008, 06:15 PM wow you guys got such good MPG.
mine is always around 17mpg, thats city driving and i shift around 3k.
Maybe something wrong with my car...

Ignored281 02-14-2009, 06:38 PM I have an 08 wrx and average about 25 mpg. I do alot of back road "spirited" driving to say the least. When I first bought the car I was averaging over 30, actually trying to see how much I could get.
These are overall estimates of what the dashboard reads. I love that feature !!!!
false_cause 02-14-2009, 11:24 PM 2009 WRX, almost entirely commuting into DC. My overall average after 2165 miles is 19.3 miles per gallon. That's on 91 octane except for about 11 gallons of 93. I drive aggressively, but abided the break in so about half my miles were very gentle. I'm a little disappointed since my commute is about 8 miles of suburban cruising and 2 of city creep and crawl; not that much stop and go. My best tank was 22.09 and was all highway driving. My last tank was 237 miles on a bit over 12 gallons for a bit over 19 mpg. The carputer mpg estimate has seemed pretty accurate for me.
SnowyAmoeba 02-19-2009, 01:17 PM depending on the weather, I usually get between 19-22 with a tank doing a full commute which is about 75% city 25 HWY. On long road trips I usually get about 27-31. I usually cruise at 73, i feel this gives you the best balance of economy as well as safety from cops.
wrx_evo_jetta 02-19-2009, 01:49 PM stock 04wrx/90k/average 22mpg/90% hwy driving... :( average speeds=70-80mph
bomber991 02-20-2009, 01:57 AM Wow look at this guys fuel log:
http://www.fuelly.com/driver/bomber991/impreza
Darkinsane 02-20-2009, 02:10 AM Interesting to see all of the comparisons. I think I average around 23-25 mpg.
dcwrx2 02-20-2009, 05:26 PM I've been keeping track of most gas fillup records since 30k miles.
Now my car has 101k miles and the long-term average is about 25.2mpg.
norcalwrx816 02-21-2009, 05:55 AM i get 32hwy at about 70-75 and longest of gone was 350+ till light came on
PSolbergfan 02-21-2009, 12:42 PM I get about 17 mpg. Stock turbo and ECM. NO cats. Stock muffler. The downpipe is a stromung catless because it's the only one I could'nt gut. It pulls harder than most of the WRX's I've driven. If I shift like grandma in my RS I get 27 MPG in the city. Oh, I don't do highway driving. All city miles.
GRBimpreza 10-01-2009, 08:53 PM I get about 25mpg mixed between freeway and local.
gilg2533 10-02-2009, 01:38 AM 30+ mpg. 2002 stage 2 wrx. Learn to drive people maybe? mmhmm mmk momee says high btw.
ImprezaWrx9 10-05-2009, 04:55 PM ^^ dang I get 25mpg 03 stage 2 wrx with 165k miles. that's mainly city
Firestarter1973 10-07-2009, 02:56 PM I've gotten 30 mpg in two different 02 wrx's on highway drives before. Also averaged as low as 19 when I bought the first 02.
thatkhmer 10-08-2009, 09:03 PM 21 mpg, 09 wrx only have exhaust and intake
running city and shell gas
elliott 10-08-2009, 11:48 PM I drive almost all highway to work 30 miles. Averaging around 28 mpg driving to try and increase mpg, but it drops quick if I am having fun driving. :)
