Hi all,

I have a 2002 Impreza 2.5 RS. The check engine light has been of and on for about a year now. Thank goodness I got the extended warranty. I have brought the car into my closest dealership (100 miles away) countless times and they have not been able to fix the problem. They have replaced EVAP valves, the charcoal cannister, and I don't even remember what else. The last time I brought it in, they reset the light, kept the car for 3 weeks, put 250 miles on it, and were not able to get the light to come on. Therefore, I got the car back with the same problem that had gotten it into the dealership to begin with. Anyway, the light is on yet again. The only consistent thing with the light coming on is that it usually comes on about 25 miles after I fill up my tank. And when I fill up I always stop fueling as soon as the nozzle clicks off. I never put even a drop more into the tank. Can anyone help me because I've given up on the dealership...

Frustrated beyond belief,
Katie

ok, that's the p0457.. loose gas cap

there's a ecm calibration id # on the 02s that can make it throw a false p0457. the dealer can reflash your ecm to fix this... supposidly

i used to get this code all the time. but if i press down REAAAALLL hard while i'm screwing the cap back on and twist it a few full turns after it starts clicking (and pushing down the whole time), i can have it stay off... but each fill up is a toss up, sometimes it comes on, sometimes it doesn't

Correct me if I'm wrong but can't dealers pull up the CEL codes from the past? If not, when it's on again go to Autozone or some place that can rent you out the OBDII scanner for free and then come back on Nasioc to look up the code?

^ to my understanding, if the ecu's been reset, then no

I have a question, my check engine light just came on, it is also an 02. they told me it was some emissions valve that was located behind my fender well. Im guessing it has something to do with the charcoal canister. is this the same valve you replaced? where is that little bugger located, do you know?

i sometimes get random check engine lights, mostly a little while after fillups. the dealership said it was my fuel pump assembly, but they never fixed the problem. i really just ignore the light when it comes on now, since it goes away after like 4 startups.

that code remains for 50 drive cycles once the light stays on(that's if the problem goes away) no WAY is there not a code stored unless you are resetting the ECU when the light comes on.

I was also having this problem since I got my 06. I think I may have the solution. I'm not sure if this is the same issue with your RS as my WRX but worth a look right.

One of the vacuum lines near my alternator was disconnected. I believe it may have come that way from the factory.

I can't take credit for figuring it out.
