View Full Version : Exploding Pepsi
RHayes 07-30-2006, 06:36 PM This happened a few days ago, I just didn't have the heart to write this until I knew the outcome would be OK... and it is all good now.
The weather has been hot lately... last week was really hot. Record breaking temps.
So, I went out to my car in the evening after the shade brought down the temperature a few degrees... it had been 105 that day and I hadn't gone anywhere during the heat of the afternoon.
As soon as I walk up to the drivers door of my 06 STi, I could see something on the glass. I reached out for it to see what had gotten on my car, but it's on the INSIDE of the glass... then I opened the door and it hits me. Friggin Pepsi. EVERYWHERE!!
I had left a full, sealed closed can of pepsi in the cup holder on the center console. That can was now bulged and deformed laying in the passenger seat. There was pepsi on the dash, the doors, the floors, the seats, the glass, the roof... everywhere you can imagine. Sticky, sticky, sticky... I almost wept. I had to suck up the pain and take immediate action.
My only solace in the beginning was that I had used Scotchguard on the seats when the car was brand new (6 months ago) and I have been using Meguiar's NXT Generation Tech Protectant on all of the plastic since the beginning. I believe that it paid off.
I had to detail every crack and crevice. 2 rolls of Scott's blue towels, a bottle of citrus 409, windex, a can of blue corral foam upholstery cleaner, lots of soap an water, and 4 hours later... my car is ok again.
This post is to serve as a warning. My pepsi could have been any kind of pressurized container. I figure it was well above 120 in my car, and may have been much higher as I was in direct sunlight, no tint, and all windows closed. You had better believe that I will be carrying no pressurized containers in the car (or even trunk) and will be taking better advantage of the shade, cracking my windows and paying more attention to the interior temp of my car.
f1vlad 07-30-2006, 11:16 PM WOw that is crazy, that must have driven you nuts, it surely would do me! Glad you got it all out of the way!
tjwilke 07-30-2006, 11:17 PM Hahaha... yeah that sucks but at least you got it taken care of. I left my coke in the car and I realized it was going to be 95 up here and I quickly threw it out.
-auSTIn- 07-30-2006, 11:29 PM Did it get on the seats?
If so, what did you do use to clean them?
Ghosthound 07-31-2006, 12:22 AM that happend to me when i was at some mall about a month ago. when i came back , my friend grabbed a coke can sitting in my cup holder... then he was like,"wow this is hot" as he attempted to hand it to another friend in the back seat... well before it got to my other friend, the can blew up. not only did the soda get in every possible crevis, making a ton of buttons stick and nasty feeling, it got all over everyone in the car.
WRXDriftR 07-31-2006, 12:43 AM carbonated stuff kills ya i guess

Uncle Scotty 07-31-2006, 03:12 AM ....some d000d posted that a can of spray paint exploded in his car/truck
....and I sold one of my cars shortly after a can of Coke blew up in it....
JDMviola 07-31-2006, 03:17 AM .. on another note, leaving chewing gum in a hot car makes your chewing gum go soft
platinum05 07-31-2006, 03:27 AM haha ^^
D fresh 07-31-2006, 03:49 AM Same goes for winter. I've had a case of beer explode in my trunk before, not in my WRX though.

Yeah, it got on the seats too... I had used Scotchguard before the 'incident' and used "Blue Coral Foaming Upholstery Cleaner" to clean it up.
deadred 07-31-2006, 02:04 PM I learned that lesson a long time ago in my accord with a can of coke. Good thing my interior was leather, it was pretty easy to clean.
dw0095 07-31-2006, 02:11 PM I have had a can of the Deep Woods OFF spray in my glovebox all summer long...I think I will take it out after reading this.
That would smell lovely if it decided to explode.
Nuke209 07-31-2006, 04:54 PM mines kinda bad (my 2001 camry)
i have a kid and she left her bottle of milk in the car, and it's been 100+ here
SO...today i went in and smelled this horrorible odor, find the bottle leaking all over my car's floor and it wasn't the prettiest thing to see either...so today...clean clean clean -_-
mikeybo 07-31-2006, 05:26 PM Same goes for winter. I've had a case of beer explode in my trunk before, not in my WRX though.
Yuppers. I had a can of 12 pack of Coke go up in ice chunks all over the inside of my Volvo big truck. Very fustrating lesson to learn.

Along the same lines, I have a can of Armor All tire foam in my trunk AT ALL TIMES. Freezing winter, scorching hot summer, and I've never ever had a problem. Granted it's in a zip-up bag with a few other detailing things, but I've done that ever since I had the car...and I've had that same bag of detailing stuff in the last three cars I've owned. Hmm...I guess I'm just lucky.

Djreversal 08-01-2006, 09:49 AM i had a mountain dew in my car... this is a few days ago.. same thing.. been about 100 degrees here consistant ly for the past few days.... and we were driving, me and my girlfriend, and there was a couple quarters under the can and it was rattleing and making all noise and she got mad and threw the can on the floor and it exploded.... yea... she walked home
jacobsen1_ 08-01-2006, 12:42 PM I've had this happen while driving in the car... The car wasn't even hot so I think it was a defective can. It was at the passengers feet and we heard a "pop" and then soda EVERYWHERE... Had to pull over and bust out the paper towles to clean the windows so we could see. Luckily being on the floor with someone's legs over it most of the soda was on the floor and their legs so clean up was a bit easier, but we still had to clean all the windows.

ProdriveRex 08-01-2006, 03:26 PM * note to himself * stoping at NAPA autoparts on the way home and getting Scotchguard Upholstery spray protector.
05BluePearlGT 08-01-2006, 05:13 PM Same thing happened to me in my civic last year. was about 115 outside, so probably around 140-150 inside the car. I had a six pack of Coke in there. I walk out, to the exact same thing. I see something all over my windows, than see that its INSIDE! What a pain in the a** to clean up. I feel your pain. Except if it happened in my lgt I'd be a LOT more upset. Glad its all back to normal, and nice and clean!
Burncycle 08-01-2006, 07:41 PM One time I was house sitting for my neighbor when we were having a heatwave. I went over to the house one day, went in throught the garage, and a can of expanding, insulating foam on a shelf had exploded all over the hood of his Porsche. The worst part was that the foam had setup and was a bunch of solid chunks stuck to the hood  he had to chisel as much off as possible before he could have it detailed.
t3hWIT 08-01-2006, 09:03 PM My turn!! My turn!!!!!
One time, at band camp I was transporting some 5zigen springs on blown struts via trunk and such when they rolled around and gushed a can of WD40. Can I have a cookie now?
