I know some folks installed the Mobil-1 Oil Filter M1-104 on the WRX and haven't had any problems. The threads on the filter are recessed and you can only tighten about 1 and three-quarter turns. Someone posted that they called Mobil and they said they didn't yet have a filter specifically for the WRX. I just got off the phone with Mobil and the bloke told me that they do not have a filter for the WRX, and that I should not use the 104. I asked him if anyone had reported problems with the 104 and he didn't answer me but just repeated that I shouldn't use the 104. He did not know if Mobil plans to make a WRX-specific filter. I guess I'll go for the Bosch 3310 or the Purolator Premium 14460.

I've been using the M104 on my RS, WRX and RS use the same filter, and I haven't had any problems for over 1000 miles so far. Another 2k and it's getting replaced, It's on there really good, so I wouldn't worry about the recessed threads as long as you tighten it really well.

I first used the M1-104 about 3 or so years ago on my Legacy turbo. I didn't even know they existed, but I was in an Autozone and saw them, and since I have respect for Mobil 1 products, I wanted to try them. If memory serves, Autozone had an application book to figure out which part numer to use. It said M1-104 for my car, and since virtually all, if not totally all, EJ series motors use the same filter, I am lead to believe that part number would be good for all Legacy's and Impreza's. I had no other method by which to determine a correct part number, so it was almost certainly a Mobil 1 book. I personally have installed them on my 91 Legacy, a 91 N/A Legacy, a 96 Legacy, and now my 02 WRX, never had any problem. Since Fram (though I would never use one) lists the exact same part number for my 91 Legacy and 02 WRX, and since Subaru filters are also interchangeable, I see no reason why the Mobil 1 wouldn't be. Somehow Mobil must have gotten scared by some threat and no longer recognized that filter's ability to fit.
Here's a test; call Mobil and see if they have a part number that cross references to the Fram PH3593A, the filter that Fram's website lists for the WRX and other Subarus.

Shouldn't you be asking whether they have a match for the Purolator 14460? Purolator does, after all, manufacture the Subaru filters and the Purolator 14460 is the one that fits Subarus.

I just spoke to Mobile, the Mobil 1 filter for the 2005 WRX is "M1-108."

Anyone know the part number for a 2002 WRX?

The 02 has the same engine so it's the same part number, lol... the m1-108 is the filter I used to use on my motorcycle, lol... you can also fit the m1-110 but it's about an inch longer (it's what I use now)... I use the pure one filters for my car... I guess I should just simplify it together, eh?

The mobil filters are about 10 bucks and the pure one filters are about 5...

Edit: Just wanted to compare my old m1-108 filter to my new pl14460 filter. As you can see the pure one filter holds more oil, the thread seems to be identical. So if you are going to use a mobil filter I'd use the m1-110, it's about an inch longer so it'll hold more oil than the m1-108

My bike filter has a rather narrow band so I might have to stick to the mobil filters for it
