So I decided to make a thread after the drive I just came back from :D

I recently installed an SPT intake, SPT cat back, Uncle scottys cocktail/transmission fluid mixture and the Apexi induction box.

Reviews...

SPT Intake: The install on this thing was probably the easiest thing ever. Came with great instructions and is super duper easy to do yourself.

After the install, I re-set the battery etc. and went for a drive. At first I noticed a little bit of a rough idle but the computer had to learn a bit and I wasnt nervous. After about two days of driving the car easy and letting the car learn, I instantly noticed how much smoother my car builds boost. before I would watch the boost gauge and it would be a bit jittery and jumpy while on its way to full boost. now its one very smooth sweep. this right here might be worth the money for the intake.

2nd, the car boosts a bit faster. it might just seem like that because its smooth but I could swear like 200rpms sooner Im at full boost.

but like every other SRI, It had some nasty heatsoak. I'll get to that later

SPT cat back: First mod I did to my car was a GReddy Evo2 cat back, I loved it. It sounds awesome and didnt attract attention.

After about 6 months I (like other people), wanted to go a little louder and Im always down for a change. So I looked into changing. Well while looking, I got an exhaust ticket  for the GReddy and forced my self to sell it.

fast forward two weeks of having an STi cat back I installed an SPT catback.

first impression...WOW. sounds much better than the GReddy. not because it's louder but has a much cleaner and deeper note imho. After going to the SPT cat back from the STI, I really felt a slight gain ni throttle response up top.

when really beating on the car and staying in high rpm's, It def seemed quick with the new cat back.

Uncle Scottys Cocktail: you've all heared about it. you've all read about it. If you havent, I suggest you do a search.

I always dreamed of being able to put my car into 1st while rolling and actually being able to get into 1st at a stoplight sometimes. (you know when youre in traffic and cant get the car into gear and everyones screaming at you because youre a n00b)

Well after a lot of reasearch, I decided to order the cocktail.

1qt redline lightweight shockproof
1qt synchromesh
2qt Castrol HypoyC 80w-90

doing the tranny fluid for my first time wasnt that bad. JUST MAKE SURE you let the tranny drain for at least a couple hours. Most suggest over night.

After the install I heared a bit more noise from the tranny and rear diff (also did the rear diff) and i was a little concerned. the sounds quited down a bit after I drove the car for a couple hundred miles. I guess its because the mixutre is a lighter weight than what I was using.

after the cocktail...I can actually downshift into 1st going around 15mph's.

I dont suggest you do this, but its a great feeling ;)

shifting is SOOOOOOOO much smoother/better. I love this. I suggest everyone do this mixture next time you do your tranny fluid.

Apexi induction box: Not too many people have done this mod. I searched and searched and couldnt really come up with anything.

After getting the SPT intake I got the urge to just heat wrap everything and get a heatshield asap for my intake.

So the plan was to wrap the downpipe and turbo and get a heatshield.

I found a used apexi induction box and bought it for 50 bucks

the box is meant for the stock intake hose so I had to modify it a little.

Ill get pictures later but theres a bit of bending and cutting involved.

1st impressions...I wouldnt buy this peice new. its just two aluminium shields and some screws. but if you find it used, go for it.

After taking my car for about a 15 minute drive I noticed some things.

the sounds from the intake are def quited a down a lot. I dont mind though, I didnt buy the intake for the sounds :D

I dont notice and real heatsoak loss.

for the past couple weeks everytime I would drive I would notice the car get a tiny bit sluggish after like 20 minutes of driving.

not any more :disco: it does the job great. after I heatwrap the downpipe and turbo Im sure to get a lot more spool and gains. I cant wait.

Ill get some pics and sound clips of everything as soon as I can. comments welcome :D

I feel the same way about my turboxs shorty intake (pretty similar to the spt I assume as they both don't "screw" anything up). it builds boost SO much smoother, I can't go back to the stock box. it's exactly as you describe.

I got a SPT intake a month or so back. You don't hear it sucking much air like other short ram type intakes. Definately makes the turbo spooling sound real loud along with the BOV. It feels like my turbo spools a tiny bit faster. I seem to hit more boost with the SPT vs the Stock intake. I conistently hold 15 PSI with a high load. With the stock intake it was around 14.5 PSI. However since I live in Florida and it has been 95+ degrees in the daytime it seems to heat soak after a little while. At night when it cools down to 85 degrees or less it definately seems pull harder than the stock intake. I've noticed a few times that it seemed to hesistate at real low RPM. I believe it has done this a few times with the stock intake, but you hear it hesistate with the SPT intake. It was more of me not giving it much gas while letting out the clutch in 1st gear then depressing the pedal a little to compensate and felt a slight hesitation.

I have my SPT intake on a 05 STI with only 5000 miles on it and almost a year since I've owned it new. I mainly just drive it to work about 3 - 4 miles a day and take it for a whirl on a weekends for the fun. My supercharged Mercedes has been designated the grocery getter since I got my STI!

the apexi induction box actually made a noticable difference

Too bad the dickhead that sold it to you took so long to send it :(

On a side note, it looks like you removed the little hose I used to cushion the hole that those two coolant lines go through. You may want to put it back, as mine started to get sliced a bit before I put that on.

I agree with it not being worth the cost new. Its 2 pieces of sheet metal and could probably be fabricated as an exact replica in a few hours if you have a small sheet metal brake and cutters. For the 80 bucks I paid, and the 50 you paid, its well worth it.

The hesitation you are feeling is detonation!!! my STI did it too with a short ram. I watched it on a scanmaster. I went to a CAI and never had a problem again. The heatsheild box would probably have worked too, but I wanted the APS anyway. When I used that box on my WRX I saw a definate drop in intake temps.

yea the pics of the box are just when i was almost mocking up..I had to trim some metal away. and yea, i put the rubber piece back in. I figured it was there for a reason :)

you need a heatshield^^^

I installed the heatshield with the initial installation of the intake. Took about 15 - 25 minutes to install without removing the box in the fender.

1 x SPT Turbo High Air Flow Intake (SOA8431000) = $165.00
1 x SPT Air Intake Heat Shield (SOA8431030) = $70.75

did they test it on a WRX yet?

did they test it on a WRX yet?

The WRX STI yes. Probably the most significant gain from the intake was in the high RPM range. Shows there is some restriction in the stock intake for the STI.

so the stock wrx intake has some restriction as well?

IIdiceII

its the same intake for the wrx and sti.

im sure the stocker has "some" restriction up top but none that you would really notice.

there are plenty of people who have stage 4 tuned cars with pretty big turbos on the stock intake that are fine.

I just like the way my car responds and drives with the intake. it feels different in a good way for me.

sounds good...i might pick this intake or the typhoon
