View Full Version : Baby Seat Bummer on WRX
mh_WRX 10-24-2001, 05:44 PM At my recent visit to once again contemplate the WRX Sedan I made a bummer of a discovery. While my older child’s booster seat fit fine, the baby seat wouldn't fit with enough room for his legs. I realize that most of you won't have this dilemma, but I'm bummed out. I can not get a fourth car. The plan was to trade in the GS for the WRX.
I like the looks of the Sedan better..but does the wagon have more rear seat room?? It didn't appear to.
I may have to wait until the youngest is in a booster.
:(
Coati 10-24-2001, 05:49 PM Is there more than one design of baby seat?
I've only had a couple of three-year olds (not mine) in seats in my Rex, so I'm not totally familiar with the design of ones for younger critters.
mh_WRX 10-24-2001, 05:59 PM The Infant to 3 yr seats tend to be thicker and taller than what a 3-6 year would use.
Coati 10-24-2001, 06:07 PM Seems like the people here didn't notice any problems:

mh_WRX 10-24-2001, 06:12 PM Most of those where for 98-2001 RS's. Of course it would be cool to have the Recaro seat... ;)
Deslock 10-24-2001, 06:38 PM I just had a baby and recently discovered that (1) the seat doesn't easily fit in my Integra GSR and (2) there is no center seat in the back (setting up the baby on a side seat is not as safe).
So, I plan to buy a new car at some point (I'm not in any hurry as my wife has a Forester) and the WRX wagon is at the top of my list... I test drove a sedan already (no wagons in stock), but I didn't have the baby seat with me to see how it fits.
I'll go back to the dealership in the next month or so and see if it fits. Will post the results.
Gerlando 10-24-2001, 07:28 PM I can't really confirm this info, but I heard the wagon has .5" more legroom in the back due to the seats being placed slightly different then the sedan.

bgsntth 10-24-2001, 08:18 PM The wagon has an inch more head room and more rear leg room. I can fit my son's baby seat behind the driver's seat with room for his legs, and I'm 6'3". This is with the baby seat in a more vertical position, facing forward. I know rear facing is very difficult, unless the baby seat is in the middle.
mh_WRX 10-24-2001, 09:22 PM Luckily, mine's a forward facing one. I guess I will go try the wagon.
Jon [in CT] 10-25-2001, 12:33 AM Is this not the tail wagging the dog? Or am I missing something? Subaru will not sell (or recommend to) you a baby seat that mounts securely within the WRX and does whatever else you require? I'd be very surprised if this were the case.
OTOH, if you're just trying to find a car that'll fit your babyseat, well...
I will be facing the same soon here. Baby girl is due in March. I was not concern about this until now... any WRX owner with a new born and any problems with a baby seat?
Also, maybe I'm a little slow today but Jon, your post.... are you saying that Subaru does not recommend a baby seat or they do and we just gotta find out what kind?
kurichan 10-25-2001, 01:00 AM The seat we use for my 3 year old works just fine. Look at some other seats.:)
Joshmel 10-25-2001, 01:45 AM Just curious if anyone has found a carseat that fits yet?? They wife and I are expecting in June now, and I am curious. Because if it does not fit I have to buy an Altima! UGHUGH!!
Any help would be cool!
Josh:cool:
WRXtrovert 10-25-2001, 01:59 AM Our baby was 6 months when we got our WRX sedan. Evenflo (on my way?) with base fit (just) rear facing and (easily) forward facing. He is now in a bigger non- convertible forward facing seat that also fits easily. Oh, and he loves the car!
Bad Dogg 10-25-2001, 02:29 AM I have the wagon. Put em in the middle. Also is some extra room next to the trunkmonkey!!

hmm, my son is 2 and he fits fine. I do have to move the front seat fwd some (rather than all the way back). You should try a different seat.

TypeC 10-25-2001, 12:22 PM Oh, just so you know
Recaro makes a baby seat too! I've seen it (although I don't have the link handy) and it looks sweet! It is red/black and has a 5 point harness like the Big seats do! I'd love to get it but know it's probably like 2 grand or something stupid like that.

TheWake 10-25-2001, 02:32 PM The two seats I have in the back of my sedan fit fine.
The booster for the 4yr old is behind the pasenger seat and the forward facing child seat is behind me.
There are no problems with leg room for either of the kids.
If you only have one seat then the center should allow an even better fit.
BTW my 4 yr old can get in and out of the car without help very easily. He tends to get out after crossing in front of his little brother. All he needs is the door opened for him since the child safety locks are engaged.
mh_WRX 10-25-2001, 02:36 PM Do the seat belts lock? Or do you use the Clip that comes with most seats? How about the center belt?
scrmnsmn 10-25-2001, 04:07 PM I have a sedan and have had my 8 month old (rear facing seat) and my 3 year old (forward facing booster seat) in the back without any problems. The one that needs more room goes behind my wife in the passenger seat.

Shaggnasty 10-25-2001, 06:43 PM if you're going to put a child seat in a WRX, do your baby a favor and get a ISOFIX/LATCH compatible seat to take advantage of the lower anchors. You will have to use one side or the other since the anchors are not in the middle. Rear facing might be a bit tight until around 1 year, but then there should be plenty of room. BTW, I got a Fisher-Price Safe Embrace II, which was the top-rated seat in Consumer Reports (although I don't pay much attention to their car recommendations!!).
I also have the Recaro seat, which is cool, but it is really more of a booster seat since there is little padding on the sides. I put it away until the little heathen gets a bit older. It was right at $100, which is not too bad.
mr_disco 10-25-2001, 06:56 PM Actually the wagon has 1.5" more legroom.
Sooberman 10-25-2001, 11:52 PM My wife is expecting any day now and I haven't tried a baby seat in the WRX yet (have a SUV, too) but thanks for all the info! :)
mh_WRX 10-26-2001, 09:43 AM For all those soon to be fathers... Congratulations.... and get as much sleep as you can NOW!!:o
outrun 10-26-2001, 10:42 AM I second the opinion of the Fisher Price Safe Embrace II. IMO, it's the best car seat out there. Our son is now 15 months old, and he's been in it since day 1 (well, actually day 3).
It was a tight fit in our '99 Acura TL (rearward facing), but we traded that in for an '01 RX300. There was much more room in there while rear-facing. Now that he's past the 1 year/20 pound mark (yes, the baby has to qualify for both), front-facing allows much more room.
I'm planning on trading in our '96 Accord for a WRX Wagon. The Accord doesn't have the LATCH system, but I'm glad to hear the WRX does (I think it's a law that all new cars have to have them).
Let me tell you, with the Safe Embrace II mounted in the RX300 using the 3 LATCH attachment points (two lower, one upper), the seat does not even budge. Extremely safe and secure. I'm sure the same would apply with the WRX since the attachment points are the same.
Now we're expecting our 2nd (and hopefully final) in March.
Drive on...

not bad at all. I was totally expecting it to be $1-2K. Do you have the contact info for that (and some pics)? I totally want one. Now you can have recaro in your mod list

No $hit! You'll only be sleeping 2 hrs at a time for the first few months! You'll get used to it and become a Zombie!:alien:
