well i know everyone gets mad when it rains after washing your car. Well what i do is wait for it to rain and wash the car while it's raining. It saves water, the soap won't dry, and all you do is wait till it stops raining to dry and wax it even. and even if i need more rinsing off at the end, that's what the hose is for :D
Does anybody else do this or think they might start doing it?

Yes you may be on to something...it's too bad I have trees overhead in my driveway though. With rain comes dirt from the trees...sigh...

That’s not a bad concept, plus rain water doesn’t have all those chemicals that you get in city water, the only thing is you have to look out for lightning…

Sounds like a recipe for a homemade lightning rod!

Yeah, I've done this lots of times... if its a warm summer day, its kinda fun to be out in the rain actually...

Fun part aside, it does make a lot of sense. Although rainwater is not 100 percent pure, its certainly better than hosewater, and less likely to cause waterspots... So, if youre just looking for an OK in-between wash, a rain-rinse is a good way to go...

it's highly unlikely that you will become a lighting rod, since you'll probably be next to an object that is quite a bit taller than you (like your house or apt). Now if you're some how washing it in in a clear empty field, then you are just asking for it.

Not a bad idea, I can imagine all the dirty looks my neighbors give me when they think I've lost it.

Well I am going to be the first one to chime in and ruin everyone's fun.

I think it is a horrible idea. First of all, have you ever seen what happens when the rain water on your car does dry? It leaves alot of spots of dust. Why? because rain water is pretty dirty water. So basically you are washing your car with contaminated water. It's almost like your washing your car with wet sandpaper. Obviously it's not as bad as if you actually did wash your car with sandpaper. But I bet that you are actually scratching the paint and putting swirl marks in it, rather then helping your paint out in anyway.

The best way to wash a car is still and always will be with a in line filter on your hose. Or the mr clean auto dry. It may not be perfect, but its alot better then rain water.

Well I’m not going to start washing my car in the rain, but I thought the reason cars spotted up after a rain shower is because they were dirty. It’s not that the rain water is dirty. Also, waterspots occur due to the fact that the water is drying on the car, not hand dried.

i second this... if you DRIVE a clean car in the rain, then the weather clears and the car dries, yes you will have dirt in the water spots. However, if you hav ea clean car to begin with and it rains (the car isn't sitting under a tree as well during the rain) your car will dry wiht water spots yes but not dirty spots.

And i thought the original idea was washing in the rain, the soap wont dry because its getting lightly rinsed by the rain.... not just using the rain as a rinse - :p

i have done this many times...as long as its not raining cats and dogs, its ok. then park it back inside and let it dry inside.

My dad owns a self service car wash so I just use that.

ive done that once. i had to wash the car so i could apply a proper layer of wax before heading up to the snow. it was great until the neighbors started to ask me thousands of questions. "dont you know it's raining?" "why are you washing your car in the rain?" "it's raining you know?"

I've done it a few times, its fun if its not too cold outside. It won't leave any spots if you dry it right when the rain stops. The spots aren't from crap in the water, they are from other dust in the air when things start drying and the dust settles on your car before the rain drops evaporate.

Ok, remember water will splash to your car again if u take it for a drive right on.

My Dad made me do this one time and I thought he was totally senile. It actually was a pretty good idea and the car came out brilliantly. Even got to waxing it after it was dry.

It's the easiest way to wash your car, cause after I'm done soaping it and washning it down, I move it into my garage for drying.

Rain rules, cause even if you don't have time to wash your car, all you gotta do is take a drive...

On a black truck I had I use to do this all the time using Durashine? If I knew it was going to rain I would give it a wash and rinse as it started to rain. It would dry spotless. :D And yes relatives and friends ripped on me for it.

I still think thats a bad idea. Even while its raining and you apply the soap to it, it will rinse it off, which is ok. And the rain won't let it dry on there. I agree with that too. But the rain will still be hitting the ground next to the car, splashing little dirt droplets all over the bottom side. I think you need to still put soap on it right after to make sure you aren't spreading all the little dirt particles accumulated on the bottom all over the side of the car. But that's just me. I guess I like my car to look the best it can, and not just buff the dirt in the best I can.

Actually, washing the car in the rain is better then washing the car my regular tap water. The rain water has much less impurities then tap water. The rain water is not bad for the car at all.

I talked to the owner of a classic mustang restoration service which would actually do the same thing. Wash the car in the rain then pull it into a garage or under a cover to dry and wax the car.

But the rain will still be hitting the ground next to the car, splashing little dirt droplets all over the bottom side.A) Don't park on dirt to do it, and hose off the pavement/concrete occasionally to keep it clean so that there's nothing to splash up.
