View Full Version : 03 LHD bugeye Sti headlamp assemblies - which bulbs are they? edkwon 08-21-2006, 07:29 PM Im looking to replace both my regular low beam and high beam bulbs in my EDM Sti headlamp assemblies, but i keep losing the info which bulb types they are. Help would be appreciated. Thanks. Ed Mulder 08-21-2006, 08:00 PM H1 low, 9005 high. 02rusWRX 11-16-2006, 02:19 AM H1 low, 9005 high. Is this for regular STI or HID STI? I have non-HID (originally) EDM STI projectors with and aftermarket HID kit running to the projector low beams. Does this mean that the bulbs in the low beams are still H1 or are they the D2S or D2R bulbs? If it helps, there is a red and black wire coming out of the bulb housing and each wire has a tubular connector to the ballasts/igniters. Reason I'm asking is because the bulbs shine purple and I would like to get regular white HID bulbs, but don't know if I should get H1, D2S, or D2R. Sorry for the old bump! -Sergei sevendhappy 11-16-2006, 03:37 AM Most likely they are rebased HID bulbs to fit the H1 projector housing. If you're looking for replacement bulbs, check out Xenonfactory.com (I've used them twice and have gotten great service). They sell H1 rebased Philips bulbs. I'd recommend buying the 4100k bulbs they offer as they will offer the best light output. Unfortunately, rebased HID bulbs are not cheap. :( But you do get what you pay for. Quality HIDs don't come cheap! I used to have EDMs with an aftermarket HID kit w/ 6000k bulbs. I bought some 4100k bulbs from Xenonfactory and the difference was night and day between those and the 6000k bulbs. I hate to say it though, but the stock projectors in those headlights suck, which is why I ended up selling them. 02rusWRX 11-16-2006, 12:09 PM Thanks for the post, that actually helped a lot! But jeez, you weren't kidding when you said those bulbs cost a pretty penny  $130 a piece will definitely break my piggy bank right now. I'm pretty sure that this will do the trick though. I don't know exactly what color temperature my bulbs are now. The guy who sold me the EDM's with the HID kit told me they were 8000K, which I can believe since the bulbs are pure purple once they're fully warmed up, but they light output is definitely to ****. My purple light gets completely washed out by other cars' regular yellow halogen light and furthermore washed out by OEM HID lights on other cars. I was actually trying to get one of the bulbs out in order to make sure it is an H1 bulb that's already in there, but it's proving to be a pain in the ass. It looks like the bulb is siliconed to a base metal clip which is connected to the projector housing by 2 very small screws. One of the screws came out easy but the other one seems to be stuck. What I don't get is why there is silicone around the base of the bulb  -Sergei sevendhappy 11-17-2006, 04:22 AM Hmmm...maybe the original owner actually used d2s bulbs and mounted them using silicon? If so, that'd be pretty ghetto. Maybe snap a pic of the rear of the headlight, host it on a free site like http://tinypic.com, and post it up so we can see what you're dealing with. Handsdown 11-17-2006, 04:49 AM since HID capsules are extremely fragile to moisture, many people seal them into the housings so that moisture won't get in and kill the capsule. it's probably an H1 rebased HID bulb that's been sealed in. if i were you i'd try to go back to H1, hopefully they didn't mess up the bulb holders too terribly for the return wire. 02rusWRX 11-17-2006, 12:11 PM Hmmm...maybe the original owner actually used d2s bulbs and mounted them using silicon? I've thought about this, but the base plug doesn't look like a D2 plug either it looks like an HB3 plug (I think). Unless he used the HB3 plug to connect to the D2 bulb  Anyway, below are a couple of pics. Please take a look and let me know what you guys think. I've got more at different angles but they are kind of crappy and shaky. -Sergei http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f107/sergei311/FS/DSCF0009.jpg http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f107/sergei311/FS/DSCF0019.jpg 02rusWRX 11-17-2006, 12:15 PM since HID capsules are extremely fragile to moisture, many people seal them into the housings so that moisture won't get in and kill the capsule. it's probably an H1 rebased HID bulb that's been sealed in. if i were you i'd try to go back to H1, hopefully they didn't mess up the bulb holders too terribly for the return wire. I've thought about the moisture thing too. I understand why they would silicon the little whole in the housing, through which the wires come out of, but the whole base of the plug??? My thought is that if water somehow gets into the housing itself, it won't matter if just the base is siliconed as the the rest of the bulb is still exposed. I thoght about taking off the silicon and seeing if it screwed anything up, but it seemed like too much of a PITA at the moment, I'll probably do it next week though. See that's the other problem I have. I know I need replacement H1 HID bulbs, but I would also like to try and get some money for these, but I don't even know what to post them as lol H1 bulbs, ghetto D2 bulbs, ghetto rebased H1, H1 w/ HB3 piggy back ... etc. -Sergei |
