I spent $2300 on these expecting them to be of good quality, thinking theres nothing like OEM fitment and with less than 1500 miles one of the struts is clunking:eek: . They are installed on my 04 sti and the car is not abused,tracked or raced!:rolleyes:

take it to your dealership. Those are supposed to allow you to retain all warranty blah blah.

Keep in mind, '04 STis are known for having suspension clunking issues. All the bolts...including sway bar mounts, etc torqued properly? Who installed them?

Check your swaybar endlinks.

Often times people will install the struts and re-install the link in the wrong position. A few good bumps later and the end link is bent.

+1 for endlinks, thought it was a ball joint or bad strut.... 3 hours later I finally found it was just a loose endlink.

Well after checking all the bolts ,etc.,I brought it in to the local subaru dealer(Metric) and they put it up on the lift and agreed that everything was torqued appropiately. What was clunking was the strut! So I gave it a shot and greased the shaft up with some white lithium grease and viola,no more clunking!
I guess since these are also inverted they are prone to sticking/clunking.
They do improve the ride substantially vs stock,prodrive springs and the JDM pinks,since thats what I previously had. Its just a poor design I guess since they need to be lubed.

it's not poor design, it's part of the install process. i installed them on a few sti's wheni was a subaru tech, it was in the instructions to lube the shaft . i remeber cuz i was laughing all day that my employer wanted me to lube a shaft

So.... In you opinion, is the strut shot? Or, are you saying that the strut is fine & the clunk, clunk, clunk is just a byproduct of the design?

I have the clunk on mine and want to take it to the dealer, it drives me crazy. If I lube the shaft am I good?

I figure it may save you some time and hassle at the dealer.

Jack up the rear of the car (at the rear diff). Then slather on some white lithium grease (found at your local auto supply store) around the bottom part of the shaft, the shiny part under the dust boot. Kinda tricky because the springs and dust boot get in the way. I wear latex gloves and smear the grease on with my finger while wedging a long screwdriver in to hold back the dust boot.

I dont recall ever hearing that you have to lube your struts in order for them to work correctly,its definately poor design! And to boot the STI factory adjustable coilovers dont even come with the dust boots,so they are exposed to all the road debris and therefore dry out quicker. Knowing what i now know I would have bought a set of bilsteins or ohlins.
