Just curious, has anyone ever had a rear diff leak to empty either from a bad seal or a loose drain plug? What does it sound like?

View Full Version : What Does an Empty Rear Differential Sound Like? Ginseng 10-31-2001, 01:10 PM Just curious, has anyone ever had a rear diff leak to empty either from a bad seal or a loose drain plug? What does it sound like? Julian 10-31-2001, 01:26 PM BOOM! Crunch! tink tink tink.... Rocky WRX 10-31-2001, 01:38 PM It sounds EXPENSIVE...:D Ginseng 10-31-2001, 01:39 PM Julian, are you serious? HndaTch627 10-31-2001, 03:35 PM it would start to howl around corners...especially if it has an LSD in it. Otherwise you'll get lots of gear whine before the bearings actually run dry and sieze. jeremy subarurabbit 10-31-2001, 03:37 PM There's a rumor it sounds like Keith's mom... :p Julian 10-31-2001, 03:54 PM Ginseng, yes, I'm serious. I don't recommend this, but after you drive your car on the freeway and come home, put your hands near the rear diff. It'll be hot, so don't touch it. Now, consider that diff/gear lube is basically same thing and provides the same functions and benefits as the engine's oil. Now imagine your engine with no oil and driving it. IF the rear diff IS dry and you drive it, it will heat up, sieze, and blow apart (hense the tink tink tink bit). Ginseng 10-31-2001, 04:19 PM Ahh, crap. It also looks like I need some sort of square wrench to open the filler port plug. Any idea what the spec is on the wrench? Looks like I'd better check the level of my rear diff fluid. Revision 10-31-2001, 04:30 PM Just use a 1/2 inch square breaker bar. Julian 10-31-2001, 05:02 PM Or, lacking that, a 1/2" socket wrench with no socket. HndaTch627 11-01-2001, 02:31 AM reivision using a breaker bar and torque wrench for everything. I think he sleeps with them under his pillow ;) Jeremy Ginseng 11-01-2001, 10:32 AM Got it...1/2" breaker bar and torque wrench. I'd assume the filler and drain ports are the same size, no? HndaTch627 11-01-2001, 10:58 AM they should be....don't see why they wouldn't be. jeremy |
