whats happenin y'all

ok so I have removed the silencer and everything is all spiffy. I have some fun backroads I like to rip on, I went out and some big muddy puddles were taken at full throttle. About a mile later while driving on the streets my car bogged down and then sputtered and died. I turned it off then tried to restart. wouldn't turn over. I took out the filter, stock, the thing was soaked with dirty water. I was terrified. I guess it sucked in the crap through the fender. I took out the filter, so no filter and drove home about 5miles about 35 mph in the snow. Drained the oil, changed the plugs to bosch platinum 4+, and put in a k&n air filter, reset the ecu. Now it runs fine. should I do anything else? I want to get some sort of tubing like a heater duct and run it back into the engine bay, what should I dooooo??? I'm still going to get rally!

If you are regularly going through water that is deep enough to flood the fender, you're going to have to snorkle your intake, like this:
intake snorkle (http://www.safari4x4.com.au/docs/snorkel.htm)

You will take a small performance hit, because you are adding length to your intake, but that's preferable to hydro-locking your engine.

BTW, I've seen engines get hydro-locked rolling through axle-deep water at a good clip. All it takes is one big splash.

yup.

I had a snorkle on my 4runner before it's untimely demise. I've been in up to my hood line, before. That's when you start to question your door seals http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif.

I hope you never had to float somewhere before you could drive off. That was really cool though.

And people wonder why manufacturers put all these little bends and pieces into the intake tract.... Personally, I never bought into the theory that they're all anti-racing-nazis...

So lets hear from some rally people. What do YOU do when you go muddin' to keep the gunk out of the filter? Those snorkels are awesome but i don't know of any Subies that run with snorkels for rallying. Robbie, how big were those "puddles?" You're lucky no hydro-lock action occured...

BTW, that video is the best water crossing (floating?) footage i've EVER seen http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/biggrin.gifhttp://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/biggrin.gif

I crew for a guy that ran a Turbo Legacy in the Canadian series.

On one trip, running on a right front flat to the end of a stage chewed up the inner fender liner & the plastic intake plumbing inside. There was sooo much muck & water splashed in when we removed the filter from the airbox you could wring it out & it was "V" shaped - it was being sucked right in!

When repairing the damage to the fender, we built an aluminum shroud to protect the opening, which essentially ducts fresh air from directly behind the right turn signal light to the opening to the engine compartment.

Worked for us... no problems in 2 years & 16 rallies.

so should I run a tube back into the engine area and aim it up???????????? get the engine serviced or some crap???

that was one heck of a video... but it sure would look very funny when not running in water. Just imagin your subie running on freeway.. http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/biggrin.gif

just a quick suggestion. Why don't you remove your right hood vent and plumb through some type of reverse intake. Instead of facing it into the wind/water face it away so that it can suck or can get some type of blower effect into it. It's just a guess so please don't flame me on it. Later

you wouldn't want to point it backwards. That would create a vacuum and drastically reduce your air intake. Also, a standard vent scoop would actually be worse since you splash way more water up over your hood and into the engine bay, going through moderately deep water. The idea of a snorkle is to get the intake as high as possible.

I doubt you would really want one for racing. You'll take a fairly substantial performance hit adding all that additional intake pipe. Snorkels are for when you need to get there, period, not get there fast http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif.
