I took my 2002 WRX in for the free normal service and mentioned that my car hates first gear. It tends to grind when putting it into 1, with the clutch on the floor, even while dead stopped. As I was explaning this to the service rep. a car runner (is that what their called?) jumped in to pull it into the garage and gave a fine demonstration of wicked tranny noises. The guy said he have it checked out.....An hour later he asked me to bring it back and leave it for 1 week so they could pull the tranny and give it a more detailed look and try and fix the problem. I'm extremely pleased that its being taken care of, but does a week sound right for tearing out and fixing a tranny? It seems short to me, but the less time in the loaner the better.
It seems alot of us are getting the shaft at dealers, especially with tranny/brake work, just though I'd give a positive post to mix up the norm.

I got my maxima's tranny rebuilt in 3 days.. they pulled it out & apart the first day.. then they cleaned/checked everything the second day. They had the tranny back together and in the car the afternoon of the 3rd day...

I had to leave mine in for 8 days. The ticket says they replaced the syncro's 1st-2nd,roller bearing, syncro set.... I'm glad they decided to do it at no charge, but still upset that I've owned many cars, and never had a tranny problem, even over 100K miles on several cars, and this one bites it at under 3000 miles.

Now that it's fixed, it does shift smoothly and easily into first from second at 10MPH. Before, even when "spanking new", it would grind and resist the downshift. Warning: if you are having any noise when you shift, GO GET it checked out. Your syncro's are probably on their way out.
