Does anyone know how to reset the ECU without taking the - terminal out? I noticed a fuse that says "Unit Backup" in the fuse box next to the engine. If I pull that fuse, would it do the ECU reset? This is for a MY01 RS.

There is a way to do it. Somebody posted how a LONG time ago. There are some jumper wires somewhere under the dash that reset the ECU......

you dont NEED to reset the battery of a 2001.
the 00's and newer have a learning ECU...

but if it makes you more comfortable...
just disconnect the battery, no need to remove it entirely...
let it sit for a 1/2 hour or so...
reconnect, restart car...
let it idle to temp, do not touch the throttle.

The reason for the reset is because I get a CE light every once a while. So, I need to clear the code somehow. Everytime I disconnect the battery, I have to set the clock, radio presets and settings etc etc. I guess the only way to do this effectively is to disconnect the battery?

Take your ride into the dealership...maybe you have a bad o2 sensor (there was a recall on our cars)

actually... you could probably just pop the harness off the ECU for a bit... that'd clear the memory of the ECU, but the radio and all should still be in tact... never tried it tho

I know the exact cause of the CE light. It's PO 0420, catalyst isn't working efficient enough, appearently the exhaust temp is too low for the catalytic converter. I've been getting this same CE code for past 2 months. CE light comes back a few days later or about 500 miles later. Today, I think I fixed the problem by replacing an old exhaust gasket with a new one because the old one was leaking and about to break apart. Hopefully, the CE light won't come back.

I thought about taking the harness out of the ECU. But, when I have to reconnect the harness, I am kind of of scared about the voltage surge that may get created at the harness, and the surge may go straight to the ECU.

I guess I just have to do the old fashioned way, cut the main source.

Your CE light WILL NOT keep coming on if you fix the problem. You don't have to clear the code to keep it from coming back. Once the problem is fixed, you shouldn't get a CE light any more. If there is still a problem, resetting the ecu isn't going to do anything for you except erase the code, but you'll still throw ce lights.

On my old 99' Legacy outback, I used to be able to pull SBF #2 (the 2nd green fuse in the box), which would cut power to the ECU.

At least I think it was #2 :) It's been awhile since I've had the outback. I miss that car :(
