Ok, I need a car, been looking for a WRX or a clean GC et al.

Local is selling a 1996, which sounds to be mint for about $5,000. I know these things love to cook thier transmission and I'm no fan of automatics.

So, how hard/expensive is it to swap an manaul into this thing? (I'm sure its been down and thier are write ups if so, just looking for a general, "OMFG it's super hard and will cost 6k" or "not bad, but will be 2k").

Second, can an EJ be mounted into this beast, would I want to. Say my engine pops, or I cook the trans. Would it be easier/cheap to pop in a JDM EJ20T for like $1,500 (apparent going rate for motor set shipped) or what? Would one of those EJ20TT's fit, seeing its a larger engine bay and clearance would not be as much of an issue as with the Impreza engien bay?

My vote would be to keep the SVX motor. They are pretty cool.

Looked at the SVX today. It's got a blown headgasket or coolant seals.

Engine Light + white vapor from the exhaust with rev-hesitation at 2k rpm. Didn't over heat though.

don't put a 20t in it, the cars are a heavy car, trust me you'll want the pwer and torque... more the torque than anything. there is nothing wrong with the EG33, in fact it is a great motor, buy it, swap out the auto for a 5 or 6 speed and then 22t pistons and boost it to kingdom come, end of story.
