Are these things normal?

1. Whine in 1st and 2nd gear, not noticable in any other(sounds like straight cut gears pretty much)

2. Turbo whine in 5th on highway (i assume this is normal)

3. Chopping sound (blow into fan blades for similar sound) coming from the turbo area of engine bay. i assume this is just air turbulence as it enters the impeller blades

4. A little lumpy at idle (~700rpm)

and this i hope is not normal...my windshield randomly cracked today, it was nice out, not humid, no major temp change, nothing hit it, it just cracked. may be covered under warranty, my dealer is checking it out for me. stems from below the molding by the lower passenger side.

Just making sure nothing's going wrong, only 2200 miles on it so nothing should be wrong

Yes, there is a little whine in 1st and 2nd if you are accelerating hard. The whining sound in 5th, you are most likely getting it when you are at partial throttle. Chopping sound?? Dunno, lumpy idle...yes, its a Subaru.

Its fine.

1. Yep, I love it.

2. I haven't noticed it, but road noise and wind is pretty prevalent then

3. If this is happening at light-medium load, around 2.5-3k RPM, it's wastegate flutter and is perfectly normal.

4. Yep, I love it.

This car makes a LOT of noise compared to other cars I've had, very mechanical sounding, which I really like.

Thanks for the replies. one more question. do the 2.5L engines usually make noise like a valve lash adjustment is needed? i don't have anywhere near enough mileage for a valve adjustment(if they're not hydraulically adjusted), so that's bothering me a little

Could you describe the noise that sounds like a valve lash adjustment is needed? I'm not familiar with what that would sound like.
