View Full Version : why debadge?
IggDawg 11-02-2001, 11:56 AM Just curious. I did a search on "debadge" to find out how, but nobody mentions why. Are the sporty ones overseas like that or is it a general consensus that it looks cooler? I feel a little stupid for asking, but I just need to know.
-IggDawg
Peaty 11-02-2001, 12:07 PM From what I understand overseas, people pay extra for their cars to come debadged from the dealer. At least an older friend from Germany told me this. It looks cleaner to me but this is subjective. It's easier to wax w/o having to work around badges. Personally I don't like any stickers or badges on the outside of my car. I don't feel the need to advertise what I have in or on my car. Some people will say well then no one will know the car is a Subaru. Well to me I figure if someone is interested in cars they will know what it is, if they are not then it dosen't really matter. If you are racing and have sponcers it's another story.

CruWRX 11-02-2001, 12:12 PM i debadged mine cause of GT3!! none of the scoobies have them in the game!!
IggDawg 11-02-2001, 12:16 PM lol. both equally good reasons. is it standard practice to take off the model badge as well? the "RS" (or in my case "TS")?
-IggDawg
HudsoN456 11-02-2001, 12:19 PM Debadging in completely personal preference. It took me a long time to decide whether to do mine, and finally last summer I removed everything on the back. I think it looks great, but you're right, a lot of people DO ask me what kind of car it is. It's purely what you want to do. In my opinion, the debadged rear end looks pretty tight, not to mention easier to wax!
IggDawg 11-02-2001, 12:28 PM I love my baby, and I like it when people mistake it for a WRX. She doesn't like it when people call her a "beg-eyed L with an EJ25" as some people are calling the new RS and TS. I think they're pretty tight, and they haul. no LSD? sure. still a real nice ride. Without the badges, I think I'll turn a few more heads. its not for me, you see. I'm just want the best for my car. You know what I mean.
-IggDawg
Edit: Yeah. Definitely easier to wax. maybe I'll do that this saturday. might be the last nice weekend before It gets perma-cold in the northeast. I'd like to get a coat of wax on. Thanks for the tips guys. keep em coming.

yea its a honda...
=P
Takie Subaru 11-02-2001, 01:37 PM People will debadge mainly because it makes the back of the car look "cleaner." When I say that, I mean it makes the back of the car look smooth and has that silly plactic metal removed. But I must agree with the earlier post, it is a matter of preference. I debadged my car because the new style impreza has a really distinct look plus in my opinon, it just looks great! Youll be amazed what a hair dryer, dental floss, credit card and a little wax/polish can do!!!!
For those of you that want to debadge here's what you do...
go to this website: (Please keep in mind, make sure you really want to do this... don't change your mind halfway through or it's really going to suck trying to put it back on...)

nqwan 11-02-2001, 05:14 PM if you want a practical reason then um...i'd take em off cause i'm too lazy to wipe in between the letters when i wash the car...
IMPREZA GUY 11-02-2001, 05:29 PM i took off my 2.5 RS badge so people behind won't know what kind of subaru it is, but then again. the spoiler and exhaust might give it away, but it sure does look clean with just the subaru badge there

Ha ha do you play your GT3 on a 5" b&w tv or something? The WRX STi has the Impreza, red WRX, and black STi badge, plus a tiny Subaru badge next to the key hole.
I think the reason for debadging is to shave weight?
Takie Subaru 11-02-2001, 07:03 PM
hahaha its not to save weight, how much weight will those silver little letters save anyway? It's just for looks, it makes the car look cleaner. thats just my $ .02.
Silver Sube 01 11-02-2001, 07:05 PM I agree that it looks smooth, but one thing.
There was a post about this not long ago and someone brought up a good point.
If you debadge, you better hope you don't park in a tow-away zone or anything. I would hate to hear the outcome after a tow truck driver comes to tow your car, thinking it's just another Honda or something.

I put the small AWD sticker from the WRX on my car. It's subtle but visable.

Takie Subaru 11-02-2001, 07:57 PM Lol! That's a pretty funny thought Silver Sube 01!
That would we a funny thought, I wonder what would happen...
Jon [in CT] 11-02-2001, 10:04 PM In Germany, at least, many/most people order their high end cars from the factory WITHOUT the stuff on the rear deck. In Porsche-speak, it's called "model delete" and there's no difference in price. They do it for two reasons. First, it's hard to clean/wax within/around the letters/numbers and, eventually, you'll snag one with the polishing cloth and break part/all of it off. Second, the owners actually hope that it'll be mistaken for a lower-end model by neighbors and fellow employees. They don't want to cause any resentment.
bsquare 11-02-2001, 10:41 PM hahaha its not to save weight, how much weight will those silver little letters save anyway?
They recently removed gullible from the dictionary.

Ripper_AWD 11-02-2001, 11:06 PM It looks cleaner

They removed it NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!
Ok, also I forgot to mention that if you debadge the boot, and you are trying to take the glue stuff off. Don't use a CC (credit card) mainly because it can cause straches and even swirl marks, the best way from experimenting would be to continue to heat it with a hair dryer and use a dry terricloth and rub. This works great otherwise follow the instructions for ravensblade.
MagicMT 11-03-2001, 12:57 AM It looks better. And it's also great looking in your rear view and seeing the people behind your car looking like this ->  "huh? what the heck is that?" hahaha! ;)

JNasty 11-03-2001, 01:05 AM One of the main reasons that I can think of debadging would be for the sleeper factor. On new BMW M3's and M5, and on every Mercedes AMG version, you can get it with no model ID on the back. That way, when some jackass pulls up next to you, he'll just think that you have some normal 5-series sedan with some nice wheels. Little does he know that you've got a 5.0 V8 with 400hp under the hood. Same with all of the Audi S cars. They will debadge for you too if you want. Yes, it does look cleaner too. Some people like that, some don't. Like most everyone in here said, it's just a personal thing. I like a badge or 2 in the back. Not a lot, but just something to say whats there.
COwannago 11-03-2001, 01:08 AM And then the tow truck tows it away with the front end in the air, cause he thought it was a Honda, and your car ends up being screwed.
Nick C.
Proud of showing off Subaru lettering.
Takie Subaru 11-03-2001, 01:11 AM I was told that on the lower left of the trunk where it says 2.5 rs Impreza, it can't be taken off. Well it can but it will leave a hole from where its bolted. Now I have inspected it and the trunk and have yet to find any sort of connection other then the possibility of an adhesive glue.
So in sort can the badge that says "2.5 RS impreza" or "WRX impreza" be removed without leaving a hole? Or have I been misinformed... If anyone could help me out Id appreciate it!!!
Andrew 11-03-2001, 01:13 AM personal preference
COwannago 11-03-2001, 01:14 AM Look at the trunks of Peaty or Accurit Performance on previous page. No holes. No bolts on new RS badges either.
GC8 WRX in Japan donot come with SUBARU or IMPREZA. only NA ones have the IMPREZA badges.
yuji;)
annointed 11-03-2001, 03:10 AM I debadged certain things (AWD L and the local dealer's crap on the trunk). But I like the S U B A R U on the back. And soon, I'll be putting on my "WRX Impreza" badge...hehe...but not yet, it's still just a lowly L for now...

For the Legacy the rear badge that reads "Legacy" has holes behind it. I found that out the hard way. The strange thing is there is no real reason for them. The badge does not have anything that goes into the holes. Strange. The other badges can come off though.

nqwan 11-04-2001, 01:14 AM its for aerodynamics, it helps balance out air turbulence or something...

I hate shredding sponges and washing between the letters.
Hyperdash 11-04-2001, 07:18 AM I dunno about gc8s, but the new age wrx rolls out of the factory in japan without the "impreza" lettering. If I were ever to debadge it'd be for the JDM look. and for waxing, I never wax my car cuz im lazy.
RallyC 11-04-2001, 11:55 AM As soon as I land my WRX, I'll be debadging it for more nefarious reasons. I plan on putting KIA or some other nonsense back there. for 2 reasons:
1)I like the sleeper factor, and I'm not out to impress anyone.
2)I figure that some clueless meter maid or cop will write me a nice revenue generation receipt, and put Kia on it. This will automatically render the ticket null and void.
Of course, I'll keep the AWD very visible, just in case, and I will run the risk of jumping through extra loops of proving that my car is in fact a subaru, if a cop pulls me over, runs the plates, and doesn't know a WRX when he sees one.
CruWRX 11-04-2001, 12:20 PM i forgot to put in my other post...the reason i debadge it, is because i can re arrage the letters to spell U R A BUS and replace them on my car, people would be soooooooooooo confused!!:D

What's a VIN? :p
Elite421 11-04-2001, 06:32 PM I like to see the looks on Ppls faces:confused: , I no longer have the 2.5 RS badge

Actually That's a good point... I VIN will get me out of the sticky situation which may arise if the law thinks that the car is stolen, but in DC, any incorrect info on a ticket nullifies it. So as long as they put anything except Subaru on the ticket, you get away scott free...
I just need to use my brain for good...
Choku Dori 11-04-2001, 11:19 PM If you have a look at this magazine, you'll notice that the Japanese GDA and GDB STi's and WRX's have no big "Subaru" across their back ends. Rather, the Subaru is next to the keyhole but the Impreza logo is just as it is here. Simple as that. And you don't need to know how to read Japanese to tell the difference! (of course, the articles kept me interested and informed... more power to you if you can read it too ;) !!) As for the GC8's, the big Subaru on the back is replaced by a green WRX "graffitti"-style sticker - no joke!! When I first saw it on vacation in Japan, I thought it was some jerk-off wanna be in an N/A Impreza, but it turns out that I was wrong and that's the way it is in Japan hehe.
Those Meddling Kids 11-05-2001, 01:24 AM 1) I think it makes the car look a lot cleaner, as well as nicer. To illustrate, look at any high end vehicle and you will not see there company name sprawled along the trunk. Could you imagine how cheesy a Mercedes would look with that? But that just my opinion. Plus you get to focus on that nice rear end and not be distracted by cheap plastic letters.
2) Cheaper. Some idiot rear ended me and I saved money by having the body shop not use them. I put that ~90 bucks to use by getting aditional work done. Hey, every little bit helps.
Of course, no matter what, leave some kind of AWD label on your car, unless your town has very kowledgable tow truck operators. I have the MY98 gold AWD on that little piece in between my right tailight and bumper.
Kostamojen 11-05-2001, 01:43 AM I got rid of the "SUBARU" cause theres too much writing on the back with the subaru, impreza, L AWD, licence plate frame, and licence plate... It looks better now, with a triad thing going with the lock + Impreza L AWD + Licence plate/frame
